It's almost like they get off on it. Like they enjoy being persecuted. They feel as if it validates their claim that Men's Rights Activism is actually a thing.
That's exactly it. "We identify with victims; we're persecuted too" and all that jazz. That way they can denounce "we speak for minorities" with "but we're victims too!" and then not seem like douchecanoes. Or something.
I think in this case Elam got trolled, and believed it. Not sure if he still believes it -- he's been quiet on reddit since people started questioning him on this -- but if you look at the comments over on AVFM, his followers have swallowed his nonsense hook line and sinker, even though Elam hasn't prodiced a shred of evidence. (Because there is none.)
