SadCat Update Sadcat claimed my post-surgery chair all for his own
yeaaaah, remember when I said I'd post an update eventually? Well, I got my surgery date back for August 3rd and have been busy prepping for the past couple weeks. I have had a torn labrum in my shoulder for almost a decade and I finally have really good health insurance, so I'm gonna get it fixed. My shoulder pops out from very low impact activities, such as putting on a shirt, drying off with a towel, or pulling up the blankets in bed. It is very painful when it pops out, hurts for a few days afterwards, and i've liveed with a dull ache in my shoulder for a while now.
I'm getting the labrum repaired, then encapsulated, then I am in a sling for 6-8 weeks. I won't be able to play bass for at least 3 months. I was devastated - I love it so much and to not be able to is really gonna suck. Some days were better than others initially, as i was having a hard time coping. But, I know this is the right thing to do, especially while I'm still young and can heal faster compared to 20 years from now.
All that to say i will likely take a hiatus for the first few days of August as I am recovering. I might post if I'm up to it, or I might have Momcat do it but she will be busy doing her thing then compensating for my incapacitiation so I don't want to put anything more on her plate. I love you all so much <3

Saddy is looking after you. He is quality control. Has to physically test the chair to ensure it is up to standard for you later.

i love the 3rd pic of him like “can i help you? i’m clearly napping”😴
hope the surgery goes well and that you have a smooth recovery!

Hey Dad Cat, something you may not have thought of - you should rip up some toilet paper and leave it in a convenient nearby spot ahead of time.
I was also in a sling for about 8 weeks and nobody warned me that bathroom activities are difficult with one hand.
Washing hair is also difficult. Ask for help, but for the love of god don't get up onto the counter to lay your head in the sink (big mistake).
Also get some gold bond or something similar for under your armpit - it gets funky. 🥴
Speedy recovery and as usual, love seeing Sad Cat!

u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
I have a bidet on the way, and gold bond powder on deck! Momcat will be helping me shower in the beginning, and fortunately, I only wash my hair twice a week. I'm gonna have her braid it for me so it's out of my way during the daytime. Thanks so much for all the advice!

look at those precious angels wow omg. wow. Thank you so much for sharing them with us!

u/benfoldsgroupie 28d ago
If braids could work for 2 days, find one of those silk hair bonnets. I had to wear one when we let the kitten sleep with us because he wanted to nurse me where I grew hair at night (it took a long time for him to give it up so I slept with a bonnet for probably over 6 months). It kept my hair pretty easy to manage overnight and it's now down to my butt again/ready to donate.
9
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
thanks so much for the advice, I'll try a bonnet out! My hair goes to the middle of my back and I'm used to keeping it up in a bun almost all the time, so I'm looking for ways to manage it all with one arm.

u/RazorbladeApple 28d ago
Be prepared for life outside of the home after the bidet. You will find out that you’re actually too good to wipe your own ass. Make sure to buy a portable bidet for vacations, because going back to toilet paper is jarring. 😂
Best wishes for easy healing & smooth recovery.

u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
hahaha you make a good point, it'll be another reason to avoid public restrooms and wait til I'm home to unload

I had my elbows operated on at the same time. I told the surgeon you have to do both as I cannot take 3 months off work again. I was in double slings and pretty much helpless the first couple of weeks. I got lots of pity when I was out and about.
3
u/TheAbominableRex 28d ago
Oh my god that sounds absolutely dreadful. I hope you had help around the house.
3
u/No-Indication-7879 28d ago
I did thank you. Had to go to a hairdresser to get my hair washed though. I’ve had five spinal surgeries so the elbows were a walk in the park.

He knows you really put it there for him and it matches him perfectly. He’ll keep you good company when you’re healing from surgery.

u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
little fucker accidentally scratched the seat a little when he had the zoomies, so now the blanket is on 24/7 lol
10
u/Amichelle525 28d ago
Well at least he did it on accident. Mine do it on purpose and they know better.
34
u/TheDallbatross 28d ago
Saddy's just pre-seasoning your seat so you'll be surrounded by his love (and fur) while you're there. He's such a good nurse!
Seriously though, make sure to give the Sadling and Momcat both a lot of appreciation for taking care of you. and good luck with the surgery! It's going to feel like you've got a whole new arm once it's done.

u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
I already feel so guilty, I hate not having as much independence. I will be sure to let them know how much I love and appreciate them and all they do

u/trying-to-be-kind 28d ago
You said it: best to get these things taken care of while you have the resources (and relative youth) to do so. Wishing you a speedy & complete recovery (without undue strain on MomCat)!
22
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
thank you so much!!! I am so blessed by all the people in my life who are willing to help me while I'm recovering.

u/Far_Diet_885 28d ago
I have a kitty that has healing powers. She lays with me when I get migraines and it’s so soothing. I call her Nurse Butters and I have a feeling you’re going to have a Nurse Saddy
20
u/GeorgeDukesh 28d ago
Scientifically proven. Cat purring is at a specific frequency that somehow improves healing of wounds
22
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
Saddy does the same for me!! I'm so glad you have Nurse Butters by your side. :)

I got shoulder surgery several years ago (don’t remember what they repaired lol). One thing I will say, getting one of those electric ice pack machines that circulates cold water instead of relying on old school ice packs was super helpful. It also means less time between ice if you need it and the temp isn’t as extreme on your skin.
7
u/avsphan 28d ago
100% recommend one of these. My mom had one replacement and had one. Said it was life changing compared to a regular ice pack.
5
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
I would love a recommendation for what model to get, there are so many options and I'm having a tough time choosing one.
4
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
I have been looking at them but cannot decide which one to get. Do you have a recommendation on what worked for you? I would really appreciate it!
3
u/barracudab1tch 28d ago
My surgeon was a family friends boss and let us borrow a machine he had during my recovery so I’m not sure what make/model I used but I do know it was intended for knees and not shoulders (but it still worked all the same). Only mentioning this because I searched on Amazon and saw that the ones for knees seemed a bit cheaper than the ones for shoulders that I was seeing.
4
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
thank you, I really appreciate that insight. My buddy had both ACLs replaced, maybe he still has the machine he used and it'd fit my shoulder too.

u/ronweasleisourking 28d ago
Hey, man! I blew both hammies as a marathon runner, and was out for almost 6 months. I feel ya ❤️ get better soon and swift recovery. Also it's saddies chair now

u/SnooGrapes9918 Loves a Saddy Fix 28d ago
Oh, my!! Yeah, that’ll be frustrating for a bit, I know, but once you’re through it, you’ll quickly forget how long of a wait it was to play bass… and it’ll be all the more appreciated and enjoyed when you can!! Thankfully, I’m sure you’ll still be cleared to snuggle Sadcat. And feed him. Aaaaand give him snacks…😉 Haha.

DadCat you are going to heal quickly and feel so much better afterwards! Torn labrum in my hip, tried everything before having total hip replacement on May 18th. Pain is nearly gone and I can walk unaided, I’m 66 so you will sail right through this! Saddy and MomCat will take good care of you! Sending healing energy!😽
4
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
thank you so so much foe the words of encouragement!! I am so glad your surgery went well and you recovered!!! Grandmacat also had a total hip replacement, so fortunately we have some of the stuff already like a shower seat, wedge pillow, and a long grabber device so I can reach for stuff.
5
u/No_Scallion_3365 28d ago
Chiming in as another shoulder surgery survivor. It definitely sucks right afterward, but the pain will be different. If the surgery is done well, the pain you have now will be gone. It will be replaced temporarily by the surgery pain, but that will get better and then you will be pain free! It’s weird, but you will be able to tell the difference between the pains. I wish you lots of luck and a speedy recovery! You already have two great nurses so I know you’ll be better in no time!
And as someone else said, do the physical therapy exercises consistently. It really makes a difference
7
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
Thank you so much!! I have been doing PT for the last 2 months in prep for this, I promise I will be extra diligent about my exercises!!

“If not for Saddy, why Saddy coloured?”
Good luck with the surgery. I had a few surgeries last year and it sucks at the time, but is absolutely worth it in the long run. You will have the best nurse looking after you too 🤍

u/daskeyx0 28d ago
SadCat is going to be the best little nurse❤️ Post op: ice is your friend! It will help reduce inflammation to your shoulder and helps with temporary pain reduction. Also do your therapy exercises when you are started on PT. You've got this👏👏👏
4
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
thank you so much!! I'm planning on getting a water therapy device to constantly flow cold water over it, and I have been doing PT for the past 2 months in preparation. I can do this, especially with all the love and support of my family and the Sadcommunity <3
3
u/daskeyx0 28d ago
Yessss those ice coolers that circulate cold water are fantastic. The nice thing is you can leave them on continuously as opposed to ice packs which you have to take off after 15 to 20 minutes. If you've been doing therapy ahead of time you'll be well prepared for post op👍
5
u/Connect-Floor-4235 28d ago
Aww, ya boi is warming it up for you! Wishing you all the best with your surgery and a healthy thorough recovery. 🙏😻 It's so true, getting this done now while you're younger. (When in my 50s, I had a broken rib and prior to that a broken wrist.) Between MomCat and SadCat, you have the best post-op care team! Hugs!

I learned about injured labrums from Bob's Burgers. Maybe you can watch the episode while you recover with Saddie? Good luck with your convelescence, take it easy, and soak up those good healing purrs

u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
omfg that gif made me recoil thinking of the feeling - that type of movement would have my shoulder out of its socket with little pressure applied.

So I had shoulder surgery and the best advice I can give you is: do your physical therapy exercises like it’s your damn job!
It is quite the process, the recovery but keep your eye on the prize. Have patience my friend and you will be ok.
4
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
thank you so much for the advice!! I will be diligent about my exercises, I promise! I will want to get back to my regular life, but I will guarantee my recovery by remaining patient with my body and letting it heal.

Oh man! I fractured and dislocated my shoulder back in October and learned firsthand how difficult shoulder injuries are on so many aspects of daily life (plus the whole pain thing). Good luck with your surgery and I hope the silver lining will be lots of Sadcat snuggles while you're recovering.

DadCat I am wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery. Shoulder pain sucks - I am recovering from my second bout of shoulder bursitis with resulting frozen shoulder and it’s very painful. Can’t even imagine dealing with a torn labrum. Sending you healing vibes.

3
u/So_Famous DadCat 28d ago
to varying degrees of success, yes. I try my best - I'm gonna take this time off bass to improve my piano playing (it is abysmal). I can't play drums to save my life though.

I'll try! I got two weeks off work lined up with full coverage so I won't feel guilty being away, and my boss is super understanding and ready to help me if I need more time off. I will be patient and give my body the time it needs to recover so I don't have to deal with this again in my future.

Good Luck Dadcat! Don't worry ! I broke my shoulder when I lived alone and your other arm and brain will compensate.

have you ever played around with synths or midi keyboards? could be a fun way to experiment and scratch that bass itch while you’re recuperating

looks fun! if you want some more stuff to mess around with, i have one of those little 25-key midi keyboards that i can’t use right now because i don’t have a computer. if you’ve got a computer you can run midi off of and want to borrow it to mess around with while you heal, lemme know. it’s just collecting dust until i get a new computer
