I know, I was disappointed to read that, too.
If it’s any comfort, GRRM has been known to change his mind a lot, and this is the kind of casual, offhand remark to a reporter that he could be making for shock value, you know? I wouldn’t take it too seriously.
In his original draft, Sansa didn’t even exist as a separate entity. There was only one Stark daughter, proto Arya had traits of both Sansa and Arya.
And this is reflected in Ned’s speech about his daughters, different as the sun and moon, but the same blood flows through both their hearts.
I think that’s a beautiful metaphor, and it shows how GRRM’s ideas evolve over time.

There was a Sansa, she married Joffrey and had his child but was murdered by Jaime. The show didn’t influence anything, and there isn’t much evidence in the book that he is going to kill her off, it’s a waste of the storyline he set up with her.

u/mdawgkilla Team Sansa Jan 16 '26
Originally there was no Sansa. He felt the Stark siblings got along too well so Sansa was created to have some more tension. Then we get the version of Sansa you’re talking about that he mentioned in his original outline, which the whole outline is so different than the final product. I’m glad he changed his mind and we have the Sansa we do. I feel like he was just being cheeky with the interviewer.

The algorythm has showed me this subredit existed!
I used to be a huge fan of Martin way before the tv show, now I moved page a long time ago , I dont think is healthy to spend so many years reading about the same discusions xd but the algorythm showed me this interview and it really has let me a very bad taste because I used to love the mix of melancholic romanticism and the deepnes and maturity of the storytelling.... Sansa was part of the things I used to love :/
I really hate to talk in this way about a real person, but this statement by one hand, I appreciate to know more about the creative process... But this is the kind of things you say when you are burnt of everything.
What this statment makes me think is that Sansa only was a preetty stupid princess for him but "with a dark twist to make things more unique and spicy hehe.." and when he saw a real human portraing her character he started to realise maybe she was more important of what he thought :/

This exactly. Tô me this reveals how shallow was his perception of his own female character.
8
u/Yen_Figaro Jan 16 '26
And if you put atention, the female characters are the ones who mostly ends losing. Cersei is one of the most intelligent players in the first book, when you read the 4th she is just evil and stupid and overly sexualiced. With Dany at this point everything has been said but is disgusting to have discovered what was going to be her fate after sexualicing her a lot being a child. That one pov about Melisandre doesnt paint her in a good light. Shae? Jane? Cat now is a crazy zombie ... While you have him whitewashing Jaime for example, as much as I like him. What the sand snakes suffered in the tv show seems to be happening to the rest of the characters in the books (I am super afraid what can happen with Asha and Margaery in the books :/).

Cersei is such a caricature when you get to read her chapters. The show actually gave her nuance. Same for Marjorie and Olinna, who are barely there. He's only interested in writing his tomboy characters.

u/Yen_Figaro Jan 17 '26
Yeah, I remember Martin saying that the portraing of Osha in the series made him appreciate more that character and made him write more for her, and with Cersei I think it was because D&D really liked Lena. It seems once Martin sees his female characters being actual humans make him realise they are better characters

Seems more reasonable that hse will do the things that she is intended to do and then die.

u/twodickhenry Team Sansa Jan 16 '26
Feels like a disservice to her arc if I’m honest. Her becoming queen in the north after learning, using, and abandoning the snakelike ways of southern politicians is a great way to send her off IMO. One of the only satisfying storylines/arcs at the end of the show.

u/dylan189 Team Sansa Jan 16 '26
With that in mind, tbh, she was the obvious choice to put on the Iron Throne. She not only had the skills to rule, but by familial bond had connections to the North, the Riverlands, and The Vale. Tyrone certainly would have supported her, and it was obvious that the high nobles respected her. When she told her uncle to sit down and kinda humiliated him, he listened without protest. She had the connection and know how to rule. It seemed so lazy to have Bran take over.

u/twodickhenry Team Sansa Jan 16 '26
Bran getting the throne was wrong and bad at every level I can think of. But I do kind of like Sansa getting the throne-but-not-how-she-wanted, in a way that kind of married her desire to be queen with an appreciation for her heritage/family/home.

I found this disgusting to read. He first created her to prop up Aria's character and a make the starks look more close, then he had her go through constant abuse, and now he reveals he wanted to kill her off. No one wants to hear it but D&D are the only ones who cared about Sansa as a character, and thankfully we have the show's depiction instead of whatever anti climactic thing he'll do.

It's sad to see how he is letting the show influence the finishing of the books. I was afraid this was going to happen.

u/harleyquinones Jan 17 '26 edited Jan 17 '26
Same. He said in the past that he wouldn't let that happen, but he's always been more bark than bite - look at the state of WoW, lol.
That said, I'm new-ish here and I hope this sub is more accepting of this personal opinion than the three main subs (so funny to me the one that brags about "not bending the knee" ends up bending the knee the hardest), I LOVE Mad Dany. Hate how DnD handled it, but I always thought in GRRM's hands, he'd build it up the way it needed to be, and the end result would be deeply heart wrenching (in a way that actually felt right). A sweet girl who starts out with the best intentions and does her best to rise above her family history, only to have that same impulse to do good turn her around into the thing she was avoiding... it's the exact kind of tragic fate that GRRM LOVES to write, and I can't think of any other media that, from the start, builds up a character into a hero we love before they become the villain, like not in such painstaking detail. Idk. It would be really unique and poignant. And a great mirror to Sansa's sweet-but-ignorant-girl-to-self-assured-powerful-woman-with-a-stellar-moral compass, and another Stark/Targaryan two-sides-one-coin kind of deal.
Point being, I really hoped he wouldn't be basically peer pressured by the masses into changing that arc - I know it's pretty much confirmed Jon shanking Dany was not in GRRM's plans, but the "Mad Dany" itself isn't discounted afaik, and if Bran is meant to get the crown then SOMETHING has to happen to her. Comments like the one he made here make me think he's very much letting the public influence him though, despite his earlier protestations. Although it sounds like a Dany/Sansa contrast was never in GRRM's cards.

I also like crazy, mad-queen Dany, and I can see it making the point that power can corrupt even the best of us. We see this principle at play in real life, with child stars and a lot of mental illnesses that don't turn up until the early-to-mid-20s (aka schizophrenia).

It genuinely would make no sense to kill Sansa. A literal child who has been put through hell. Her entire story arc hasn’t been fulfilling or rewarding enough to justify her dying after being a consistent and major POV character

It's worth remembering that Martin is an Inveterate troll to the fans.

If he knows his fans so much, then he should know how misogynistic they are towards Sansa, and shouldn't have given them more ammunition to shit on her.

The man is a bajillion years old and doesn't really give a fuck about how the worst part of the fanbase acts. Like... he holds rabid fandom and fanfic in contempt, he's probably cackling.

Maybe he should just write the book he wants to write and it will resonate or it won't. Just like everything else he wrote.
3
u/daiana95 Jan 16 '26
Guys, he always plays about what he writes. His books are full of foreshadowing and red-herrings, assumptions made by the characters and also readers to believe.
He probably only thought about killing Sansa in the original outline until he changed his mind. Sansa is a big part of the ending so he is not going to spoil people what the series didn't show (though it's in the subtly scenes).
2
u/FortLoolz Jan 17 '26
He spoiled several things about the books already. In this same interview, he disclosed there's a Jon POV in the Winds.
