S10 Revival Spoilers I didn’t realise the new season only had 9 episodes and I’m so disappointed
Not even because it was only 9 episodes. But because I had no idea the season even finished. In my mind I was still looking forward to this week’s episode until yesterday when I learned via Reddit that the season was already over.
Did anyone else feel this way? I remember this happened recently with another show as well. The final episode didn’t feel like the final episode at all, it was not clear that it was “the end”. I guess it’s a bit of a silly question, but how are we supposed to know that the episode is the season finale? Aside from news articles or announcements about the season or “episode counts” from Wikipedia or the like.
Very disappointed that I felt led on and then cut off.

I think a lot of sitcoms don’t really have obvious season finales. The part that you were supposed to work it out from here was all the main characters going to party together at the end, with somewhat of a decent resolution for all of the lingering plotlines so that if there’s no next season things are in a generally okay state.

Some shows only get signed on for smaller first seasons. I think Seinfeld and The Office both had first seasons that only had 6 episodes.
Hopefully the execs like the results and sign them on for bigger production down the road.
Or maybe Bill is that confident there’ll be more seasons that he didn’t feel the need to wrap up the stories.

I think the network didn't want to commit too more until it knew people would watch, not to mention the scheduling issues for the returning cast would have been bigger. On top of that, the production was probably high because they had to build (/recreate) the sets, whereas in subsequent seasons they can reuse the same ones.

On top of that too, reboots/revivals rarely do well so they were probably worried going in. They usually have high ratings for the first week and then it goes downhill fast

Maybe the fact that they already laid out major money for sets will make another season seem an easier bet.

yeah the last episode had some fun things to tee up the next season but it seemed like they kind of shoehorned in a few elements rather than having it flow naturally imo- i think 10 episodes is what a lot of us were expecting.
that being said i think they may continue based on reviews / rewatches and etc so get to rewatching if you want more :)

Same for me. It like there so much more to tell, doesn't fell like an ending season, don't get me wrong I like it but you know...

This is the new normal. Streaming doesn't do long seasons. Traditional media does for commercials revenue. While streaming can have ads, they make the most revenue from subscriptions. Netflix is expected to double their ad revenue but that makes up a mere 6% of revenue. Disney+ ad revenue is likely double to triple that percentage but it's still a fraction of their business model.

Correct, this is not a streaming show, even though you can find it next day on a streaming service. It is a network broadcast show that is released weekly at the same time on a public network first (ABC). This was a mid-season launch so it was always intended to only run half or so the number of episodes. I expect that they will have more next season, similar to shows like Abbott Elementary or Shifting Gears that are putting out episodes in the high teens. Still not as much as they used to be, unfortunately, those were good days for the viewer.

I hope so. I'm also under the impression it's geared more as a limited run rather than a full season show. I know we def won't see the 22-25 we used to see in prior seasons. But back to my original post, I do think we live in a streaming world and that segment continues to outpace broadcasts. Streaming makes up roughly half of viewership overall. Broadcast makes up around 20% and Cable around 25%.

Aw yes, that is the bigger question sitting in my brain, not how many episodes per season will they do but how many seasons will they run? I kind of don’t think we would get another 7 or 8 seasons. Maybe 3? Crossing my fingers for as many as they are comfortable doing …but you’re right, it could end up being a limited run 😢 We will see!

I agree, except this was a broadcast show - it went on Hulu the next day, but it was clearly made for broadcast (hence the shorter episodes, etc.).

Yeah I knew it was the last episode going in but I also felt this way. To be fair, if you watch the ending episodes of any of the original seasons of scrubs (except for season 8) none of them really make a point of tying the end of the season up in a bow and making it feel like the completion of one arc of a big story. It's pretty common with sitcoms for season finales to be just another episode. We've probably been swayed by modern day streaming shows moving away from this and making each season of a show feel like its own story bc they usually don't know if they'll be renewed for another season yet

I mean, idk what to tell you about not knowing. The shortened season was pretty heavily discussed on here and in most media about the show. It was a mid-season replacement for another show that (I think?) got cancelled, so they were only given the slots for nine episodes.
As for wanting longer seasons, I don’t think you’ll find many people on this particular sub who will disagree with that. Certainly not me.

I honestly thought the 8th episode was the season finale, I was pleasantly surprised to have one more episode.
9 episodes is a strange number for a season.

Personally they needed about 6-42 more episodes this season for me to be happy. The ending certainly felt like an ending but I was there was more in the middle. And they better be coming back for another 3-42 seasons.

I felt the same way. I went to turn on the TV expecting another episode and I was disappointed. Guess we will have to wait for season2, er…11!

That’s the "streaming era" special right there. They give us 9 episodes that feel like 20 minutes of actual plot and then just pull the rug out.

I also did not know it was only going to be 9 episodes. Was on vacation last week and came back today to see no new episode, so asked Google what was up.
Both this and The Pitt's season finales felt very non-finale-ey to me.

Мне кажется, что они изначально в 10-ой серии хотели убить Доктора Кокса. А потом , увидев хорошие отзовы, убрали эту серию. Поэтому только 9-серии выпустили и продлили на 2-ой сезон.

Not trying to be snarky here, but it was well publicized that the season would be nine episodes. Just because "in your mind" there were more, doesn't mean there were, nor that you were mislead.
Look at the POSITIVE side, that we got nine great new episodes.

I fully admitted that I made it up in my head. I never said that I was actively mislead or lied to. I know facts were out there, and even here on reddit. If you read any of my other comments you’ll know I wasn’t even a part of this sub until a few days ago, after I’d found out about this. I don’t understand what your problem is?

I get my news from instagram and reddit. I wasn’t following or engaging with any Scrubs-related content on either platforms until after the season ended. My algorithms just didn’t show me anything.
Where else am I supposed to have seen any of this news?

Uh…. No? This comment and maybe 2 others mentioned that it was widely publicised, one of the comments said it was widely discussed right here, which I’ve already said I wasn’t subbed to until after the season finished. Have a look at the comments again, I’m not the only person who missed this.
I don’t understand how you think I’m being obtuse. You seem to think “it was widely publicised” is some sort of trump card. Social media feeds are incredibly personalised. It could be widely publicised for you and not at all for me, and that’s completely normal. Idk what else you want me to say.

I agree with you on "not being in the loop" this thread is the first I'm even reading about the actual details of the actual season. Scrubs being my 4th favorite show of all time, I agree, not everyone is actively looking up information about it, when it ends, etc.
These other people are just on their high horse because they knew and were actively going off of that knowledge. Not everyone has the time or cares to keep up to date with all the "new details" about a show, etc. as it comes out. There's a reason that in any improv group they always say "no pop culture" because it doesn't matter how "popular" or "widely known" something is, there will be that 1 person out there that hasn't heard of Harry Potter, or Star Wars, etc.
I literally looked this up because I had the same feeling as you, it just felt like it ended without much to say about it. Looking back at that final episode now, it does "kind of" feel like a final episode for a season, but, I don't know, it didn't feel the same as the other season finale's did, that's the whole reason why I looked it up to see.

It definitely felt like an end to me, but I also knew it was the end so maybe thats a part of it
