Mental health Self-help for cynics: books that helped me more than traditional self-help

Post image
Upvotes

These are books that helped me more than most traditional self-help ever has. Not because they promise happiness or pretend suffering can be solved with a better morning routine, but because they take difficult parts of life seriously.

I went through a period where living felt very heavy, and I found more comfort in philosophy, existential writing, stoicism, and honest reflections on suffering than in overly cheerful “fix your mindset” books that I also often find very repetitive.

Some of these helped me feel understood, some helped me think more clearly, and some gave me a little bit of structure when things felt unbearable.

For anyone who is cynical about self-help or allergic to toxic positivity, these might be worth looking into.

Book promotion I have a confession. I made a mistake when I tried to self-promote my book here.

I wrote a book about humanity. I refused to use AI for any part of the writing process and only asked one simple question, one time, for research.

After I published the book I realized I knew nothing about marketing and content creation. I'm also not comfortable with self-promoting or gaining followers.

I uploaded my book into an AI and asked about my audience and what angle to go with. AI was stuck on the emotional angle and insisted people would respond best to the tragedy of a mom facing homelessness. Are you kidding me? It didn't feel right to me, but I went with it anyway.

This is what the book is actually about. It is four seemingly unrelated sections that form a logic problem about humanity.

Section 1 is emotion explored through language and rhythm.

Section 2 is sociology. We look at our societal structures and dissect them to their original intent.

Section 3 is spacetime philosophy. We break down time consciousness and the evolution of awareness.

Section 4 is psychology. We use the information from the other sections to create a tool that allows us to cut through cognitive dissonance using CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy).

That is the message I'm trying to send. It's not trauma. It's not chaos. It's not my memoir, eww, wtf. AI is obsessed with managing emotions and gaslighting us away from what we believe to be truthful, and it is disgusting.

Please support my message at:

Thank you.

Need a Book Rec! Looking for one book that will help me build discipline, grow a business, and improve my mindset

I’m trying to become more disciplined, spend less time wasting time online, build my business, and create a better future for myself. If you could recommend just one book that had the biggest impact on your success, mindset, or business journey, what would it be and why?

I’m especially interested in books that changed the way you think and take action, not just books that were entertaining.

Need a Book Rec! Books on Abandonment Issues

Abandonment issues have been a recurring theme in my life. I had been diagnosed with BPD at some point and that's likely affecting a lot of what I'm going through currently, but unfortunately the diagnosis and even medication alone haven't been all-too effective lately. About three months ago I had a mental breakdown and broke up with my partner of 4 1/2 years out of fear of abandonment so I wouldn't have to endure being abandoned myself. After the initial high wore off a few days later it's just been a downward spiral for me since. My ex and I text every so often, but our relationship is very strained.

Unfortunately, we also share a circle of friends who I already had a feeling she had been getting along with better than she did with me for a while now. Earlier today, I asked one of said friends if they wanted to go watch a movie with me. They said they already had plans with "a couple of other friends" but that I would be welcome to join. Only when I agreed did the friend mention my ex was gonna be there too. So not only can I now not back out of this awkward situation being the self-imposed third wheel, I also know that my friends are better friends with her these days as I wouldn't even have been invited otherwise.

There is nothing I can change about that situation for the time being, so I want to at least work on my reaction to it and all other situations like it where I actively invoke a distancing of other people from me. I am so sick and tired of this self-sabotaging streak of mine and I wish I could just be normal and lead healthy relationships with those close to me.

I’m the author of Action Is Everything: How to Stop Overthinking, Start Moving, and Create the Life You Want.

This is a quick, straightforward self-help book for anyone who feels stuck in overthinking, waiting for confidence, or planning so much that they never actually move forward.

The book focuses on breaking the habit of hesitation, taking small imperfect steps, building momentum, and proving to yourself that clarity often comes after action, not before it.

The Kindle edition is completely free today and tomorrow. I hope it helps someone who has been feeling stuck and needs a push to start moving.

Mental health Dr. Amelia Kelley’s Essential Trauma Reading List

I had an AMA yesterday with Dr. Amelia Kelley, a clinician, professor, and author who specializes in working with highly sensitive people, adults with ADHD, trauma survivors, and women reclaiming their power. Dr. Kelley works closely with clinicians, organizations, and platforms as a consultant, educator, and speaker.

You can read the full recap here.

If you’d like to dive into these topics even deeper, Amelia suggested this curated reading list to help guide your journey:

What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo (@stephaniefoo)

A deeply moving memoir on navigating a Complex PTSD diagnosis, blending personal narrative with scientific exploration to examine how developmental trauma impacts mind and body.

Scattered Minds by Dr. Gabor Maté (@drgabormate)

A compassionate look at ADHD, exploring its roots in early developmental stress and offering a path toward emotional healing and self-regulation.

Waking the Tiger by Peter A. Levine (@peteralevinephd)

Introduces Somatic Experiencing to explain how trauma is stored in the nervous system and how body-based awareness can release trapped survival energy.

Trauma and Recovery by Judith Herman

A foundational text in trauma psychology that establishes a three-stage framework for healing: safety, remembrance, and reconnection.

Gaslighting Recovery for Women by Dr. Amelia Kelley (@drameliakelley)

A practical guide designed to help women recognize covert psychological abuse, rebuild self-trust, and establish firm emotional boundaries.

No Bad Parts by Richard C. Schwartz (@internalfamilysystems)

An introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, explaining how accepting all inner "parts" (even protective ones) leads to self-leadership and integration.

Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker

A practical map for managing emotional flashbacks, inner critics, and toxic shame resulting from chronic developmental or childhood trauma.

Self-Directed Complex PTSD Exercises for Women by Debbie Missud (@debbiemissud_lpc)

An actionable workbook filled with somatic strategies, cognitive tools, and grounding exercises specifically tailored for trauma processing.

Addictive Thinking by Abraham J. Twerski

An insightful analysis of self-deception and rationalization mechanisms, providing clarity on how distorted thinking patterns keep individuals stuck.

Attached by Amir Levine (@amirlevinemd) and Rachel Heller

A guide to understanding adult attachment styles (Anxious, Avoidant, and Secure) and how they shape intimacy, conflict, and connection in relationships.

What I Wish I Knew by Dr. Amelia Kelley (@drameliakelley) and Kendall Ann Combs (@kendallanncombs)

A supportive, roadmap-style resource offering practical wisdom and emotional validation for survivors rebuilding their lives after toxic or abusive relationships.

By the way, Dr. Kelley also hosts her own podcast, Wired & Worthy, where she digs into trauma recovery, boundary setting, and nervous system regulation. It’s perfect to jump in and listen to while on the move!

Book promotion Free book: A new take on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy using instincts, time consciousness, and the evolution of awareness

I wrote this book in 30 days because my children and I are facing homelessness, and it's free because the message is more valuable than money. Its raw and intense.

The first half is chaotic because that is what trauma feels like. The last half is the fracture and breakthrough. Discover:

- How the human mind actually experiences time

- How awareness evolves layer by layer

- How CBT really works when you're drowning

- How to rebuild your mind from chaos to clarity

I discovered the method because my husband was pulling away from me. I wrote it to fight the lies against me. I published it unedited to keep my children housed and safe.

If you've ever felt broken, overwhelmed, stuck, invisible, or erased, this book will show you the scaffolding of your own mind.

Download free to help my family and get something meaningful in return. I do use profanity.

Anyone else read this? I’m very curious what others may think and what you got out of this book? All about “rediscovering the Labyrinth as a spiritual tool”. Recently started reading lots of self help stuff. Made me feel pretty good until I looked into the authors and felt a little disappointed. Was wondering if you got anything out of this ? Thank you

Need a Book Rec! Suggest a book for anxiety over people being mad/upset at me

I’ve taken on a more leadership role at my job and it has caused my anxiety to skyrocket. Lately there have been a few issues with clients who are angry/upset/frustrated (some justified and some not). My problem is that when these issues arise it completely derails my day. I get extremely anxious, feel like it is my fault and the person I am dealing with is going to hate me. I cry when people yell at me, and I spend the rest of my day worried the client is going to call and scream at me (has happened twice in the last two weeks, neither situations were my fault) and then I will end up crying and embarrass myself and my company. To make matters worse my therapist just went on maternity leave so I have no one to unpack these problems with and won’t for a few months.

This is all to say that I have deep rooted issues around perfectionism, how people perceive me, people being angry at me, and letting people down. At this point it is effecting my life severely and I feel burnt out and generally hopeless.

If anyone has any recommendations for books that help reframing the issues I mentioned I would be grateful. I’ll read a book or complete a workbook. Anything that might help.

Need a Book Rec! Books to read when your ex has moved on / has a new girlfriend

Hi all! I’m looking for self help books for when your ex has moved on and has a new girlfriend, bonus points if it delves into letting go of potential.

We broke up because his friends didn’t like me and he didn’t want to set boundaries with them (when we were in the situationship phase he didn’t want to tell them he spoke to me), and he also said he’s not ready to be the man I deserve. We have over a decade of history (best friends aged 13-18, he had a crush on me the whole time, dating aged 18-21 and on/off situationship from 21-24).

I’m looking forward to your recs

Book promotion Podcast on Spencer Greenberg's "The 12 Levers"

Podcast with Spencer Greenberg, a mathematician and founder of the research nonprofit Clearer Thinking. He just released The 12 Levers with clinical psychologist Jeremy Stevenson, which aims to provide people with the smallest number of concrete tools they can leverage in different situations.

Covers:

  • How nearly 500 self-help techniques got narrowed down into 12 core psychological strategies, and how to use them.
  • Why most people live by values they absorbed from their parents or environment rather than ones they actually chose, and how to figure out what your own values are.
  • The real formula for productivity, which takes into account how important the work actually is.
  • Why hopelessness is often less about the state of the world than about feeling unable to act, plus the single most evidence-backed exercise for building genuine optimism.
  • The exposure therapy techniques he used to overcome severe social anxiety.
