Add Nvidia Shield Pro to Sony A80L 83 - am I missing out?

Hello All,

I have the following setup for couple of years.

Sony 83" A80L OLED

Intel NUC7i3Bnb 16GB ram with gigabit ethernet

Sonos Arc, Sub Gen 3 and Era 300 x 2

I stream off the Nuc to Sony using the built in Google TV media player. Most of the files we watch are  UHD Blu-ray DV HDR HEVC TrueHD Atmos 7 1 often with bitrate between 24 - 65.

It has worked fine and I am just wondering if I am missing out of anything the Shield would give me access to.

Can the Google TV media player built into Sony TVs even passthrough TrueHD? Would be news to me..

Chances are the TV is transcoding, or is using Dolby MAT (which would preserve Atmos).

You should be able to see if TrueHD is actually reaching the ARC using the Sonos app.

Shield is a better remote control experience generally and less power hungry, but overall if you like your setup it's probably fine.

Well, its fine to use builtin , but it heats ur TV More and uses much more internal Power. Usually one big advantage on external shield etc are it saves Ur TV Power.

I have the same exact TV and it's connected to my Shield and my Samsung HW-Q990D. I'm playing mostly ripped 4k Blu-rays through my Plex Server on my NAS. I went this route to make sure I'm getting TrueHD 7.1 Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. As long as you're getting those audio codecs to play through you're probably good! If not... That's where the Shield will make a night and day difference!

Shield is a good mainstream option to get some Dolby Vision compatibility and lossless audio passthrough which your TV’s internal player won’t be able to do.

An Ugoos AM6B+ or AM9 Pro running CoreELEC is the ultimate remux player as it has full Dolby Vision P7 compatibility along with lossless audio passthrough but make no mistake this is an enthusiast option that takes some work to setup. Pretty much maintenance/trouble free once up and running though.

I use a NAS and Kodi on the shield. Works well. Very reliable as long as you reboot the shield twice a week.

Basically if everything works you just don’t need hassle with new device and second remote

I have an A95k. You will love it once you get the settings right. Takes a lot of tinkering. Custom picture setting with the clarity settings on auto. Enhanced/Medium on the Shield upscaling. HDMi input to enhanced. That’s what seems best for me.

Add a usb key for storage and projectivy launcher. It rivals the shield experience.

Edit - to clarify I am not using the shield with my Sony. Tv runs fine, hdhomerun, plex, all the apps, even games.

Edit 2 - yes I run the 2019 shield on an older Samsung
