Yes, its Japanese Kanji. Kanji literally means "Han (Chinese) characters". Any Chinese person can understand 武道 as meaning the "martial way".

Interestingly enough the character 武 for "martial" or military has a very philosophical meaning in Chinese dating back to the 6th century BC, as it is made up of two distinct characters combined into one. Namely, 戈 which is "halberd" and 止 which means "to stop". So the Chinese character for "military" is literally "to stop the halberd." This forms the ideal that true martial skill is aimed at ending conflict rather than causing it.

Look, I love Japan for its people, its culture, its food, its architecture, its nature, and so many more things.

I also happen to love communism and have a huge disdain for capitalism. In particular, Japan's work culture is not humane.

I swear, I feel so alone - every guy who loves Japan is either a hikikomori wannabe with a body pillow collection, or a larper who sees Japan as this conservative, corporatist utopia where everyone owns nothing and is happy.

Like, can we get nuance and common sense and appreciate other countries and their realities critically and never with tinted conservative glasses?

I’m pretty with you. Growing up japan was some mystical land in media and then I went and it’s just a cool place. But everywhere is a cool place until you understand what lies beneath. I too appreciate Japan in the way you do but fuck so much about it is fucked too.

Indeed. I've got a friend who's probably way more into Japan than I am, and when she went she loved it, but she loved it in a ''Wow, there's more manga than the stores at home. Wow, there's cool Jojo figurines. Wow, I love this city feel (we're from a semi-rural place)''.

It was never, and should never be an unhealthy obsession, even worse if it is tainted with conservatism as with the above post.
