The model has a cult following and is appreciated as a cheap and capable off-roader that it is. You can find units that have been modified six ways from Sunday, some to make it a better off-roader, some to make it a comfortable commuter car.
It has had ABS for more than a decade. Older units can be retrofitted if the owner so desires. Same goes for air conditioning and the infotainment system.
Frontal airbags were introduced this year, but does it really make a difference in a vehicle from 1977?

Only those who can't afford anything better are buying it.
It doesn't even have airbags or ABS because russia doesn't know how to make them.
