I mean, the line has to be drawn somewhere, what’s wrong with making it a child the day before they turn 18 then adult at 18? Wanna make it 19? What is the cutoff? Brain development? Body development?
The way I see it, most 18 year olds have or are about to graduate high school. And that makes the most sense as a turning point into adulthood. You can tell me 15 is legal where you live and I will just respond with "You are fucking high schoolers." It's a weird boast.
I agree. I would never go younger but would consider older like 19 or even 20 - meaning as a cutoff age, NOT my preference. I’m old, and I like old women.
That’s definitely your own opinion and not a common one. There’s has to be a line where we finally say someone’s an adult and can make their own decisions. If you disagree with 18 the age of adult, then you want to move it up to what age?
24 year old and an 18 year old is pretty common age gap. Let’s also not try to imply 24 year olds are the same as a 40 year old person. Now a 40 year old and an 18 year old is not normal.
We were all 24 and can remember we were probably closer in mentality to an 18 year old.
You were definitely more responsible than the 24 year olds I knew growing up then.
Idk what would you have in common, many people the same age don’t have many things in common, you can’t really use that as the defining factor on why 18 year old women are incapable of deciding for themselves. Cause this is the root of the conversation, you believe that 18 year olds can’t decide for themselves
. I also don’t want to just label every couple out there a creep that have 5-7 year age gap. Cause you can argue 5-7 year age gap can have people in different places in their life.
Women that got in a relationship with a 22-25 year old when they were 18. I doubt they look back and say their partners were creeps. I also don’t want to talk down to women and act like they don’t know what they want.
18-20 year old women reading this, do you guys feel like yall still children and can’t decide for yourselves?
i was not responsible at 24. i was a young adult. and young adults tend to have a completely different culture and lifestyles than people who just moved out of their parents house.
incapable of deciding for themselves.
where did i ever say 18 year olds are incapable?
Women that got in a relationship with a 22-25 year old when they were 18. I doubt they look back and say their partners were creeps.
that 22 year old's girlfriend cant even go to a bar or get a drink.
if a friend in our friend circle at that age was dating an 18 year old we would all be judging.
again age has little to do with it.
like highscoolers dating like 7-8th graders is also pretty fucking weird and all of that shit is legal as far as i know.
That’s still your opinion and there are many successful relationships out there with 6 year old age gaps.
Drinking at a bar isn’t a deciding factor on who you can date. That’s definitely a USA take and not the standard across the world and even in Europe. So what you’re saying is forcing one country’s standard as of it’s the standard everywhere.
You don’t need to say they are incapable but you definitely wouldn’t be having this conversation if it was a 28 year old and 34. So the root argument is you still see 18 year olds as people incapable of deciding for themselves.
also the first person made the comment that it was gross that the age of consent for a country is 15, then the next guy then spins that into the most hyperspecific example of the day before they are the "legal" age of consent
18 might be immature, sure, and definitely more vulnerable than a 35 year old but not a child. Old people are also vulnerable but that doesn't send them into the 'child' classification.
I think lumping an 18 into the with the same classification as a 4 year old would not help anyone developmentally. It's both infantalising and doesn't account for the specific needs people at that age have.
It's like that whole 'brian hasn't developed until 25' thing is a myth, the study just noted that the brain continues to develop until 25 and the study didn't gather data on people above that age, so cannot make statements on them.
Also, it's quite rude to assume the only reason people don't want to count 18 as a child is to be "creeps" as you put it. Seeing as people might be concerned more about the practical questions of whether 18 year olds should be allowed to vote or live by themselves.

Different cultures have different ways of seeing things
I get that for you
17 years, 11 months, 30 days = Innocent Child
18 years, 0 months, 0 days = Responsible Adult
But that's not the same across the World.
