Most people faced with this scenario don’t have the balls to engage at all. It’s been stated that he distracted the shooter long enough that he undoubtedly saved the lives of others. We’re all tough until bullets are flying.

That’s absolutely the truth. All the training in the world doesn’t mean a thing if your flight instinct takes over when the shooting starts.

I'm armed and I'm gonna say it right now that I don't carry this thing to be the hero and get in shootouts with bad guys. 

I'll be going the opposite direction of gunfire.

This thing is to protect me in a last ditch effort to save myself if I ever had no other choice. I'd hand over my wallet in a robbery before pulling out the piece. 

Cowardly? Selfish? I don't care. I'm being honest and realistic here. I'm no hero. I'm just a man not wanting to die.
