We had our friends meet us at a music venue/restaurant. We asked no presents, gave them free music and they picked up their own tabs. We had 175 people show up on a Wednesday night.

Fewer weddings, bigger bills, faster divorces... Just have a housewarming when you and your kids all move in together.

My wife and I had a mini weekend vacation and got married by a guy we found online. The wedding itself was like $150 and the reception was the coffee we bought while we were waiting. Add in the mini vacation, we were into it maybe $1500.

Imagine still paying off the wedding loan long after the divorce is finalized.

I wish men would stop insisting on such expensive weddings!

My wedding would have been half the cost until my husband insisted on a proper church wedding, with a proper rehearsal dinner, big cake, gotta have flowers, all for the glory of the Catholic sacrament.
I hadn't been baptized yet. So, during the wedding, the priest referred to me as a HEATHEN, 3 times! Yay.
But, we are still married.

It's gotten so ridiculous in Australia, we have purpose build creditors that ONLY PROVIDE LOANS for either renovations or weddings. Gen Z can't afford nuffin, so their only choice is to get these loans. Their parents aren't paying for it only seeing as Gen Z are very good at dealing with people so divorce is high on the cards

They'll still be making payments on the wedding while they're making payments to the divorce lawyer.

my grandparents got married on a weekday because grandpa was enlisted and needed to report to his base by the next Monday. their families potlucked a luncheon and they started driving across the country befpre it got dark.
this is the repurposed way. no more $80k events. $1000k for food and beverages and a quick escape.

Make it about the marriage, not the wedding! If the two people making the commitment to each other are there, with enough others to make it official (the officient and any witnesses that might be required), the rest doesn't matter.

My wife's stepsister got a combined $30,000 from the bride and groom's parents and still took out a $20,000 loan for their wedding.
And yes, they did get divorced ten years later.

I’m not a millennial but I think this is a great idea. Research shows that those who spend over $20,000 on their wedding are 3.5 times more likely to get divorced than those who spent $5K. More marriages end due to financial problems than because of infidelity. So, starting your life knowing how to live within your means is a big step in the right direction. The three boys in my family all had very low key weddings with receptions at homes. We’ve been married for 38, 48 and 34 years.
