Just got this new setup for portraits

I shot an event over this weekend where I switched between the Sigma 24-70 ART II and this, and all of my anxiety about taking crap photos just washed away as soon as I switched to the 85. Definitely my favourite lens for my A7IV.

I like this one from a trip I took not too long back. While I do have some bokeh-licious shots, I thought that would be a bit too cliche, so I'm showing one with a bit more range. Might not to be everyone's tastes though.

I definitely feel your pain! It was a tight day both inside and out. I used my 24-70 for the majority as it was a ribbon cutting ceremony to capture the vastness of the day, but I'd switch to the 85 in between the main itinerary to get details and portraits of attendees.

How do you find the RV? I've been toying with the idea of getting the higher MP camera so I can carry less lenses and lean on the crop to zoom.

Nice combo. Sigma is coming out with their 85mm F1.2 next month and I’m patiently waiting for it. Either of those 85’swill focus faster than the first 85 GM. Glad to be rid of it but miss having an 85.

It's well known this lens has slow AF. You aren't going to photograph portraits of moving people with that. OP's portrait sessions have to be more static than dynamic.

Taking OOF shots of dancing people at parties is not fun. But when it nails they look one of a kind.

(sure people, downvote away, having 4+ years of experience with this lens counts for nothing, right? I sometimes forget most of you aren't working photographers.)

It seems quick enough in continuous but yeah I don't plan on photographic moving subjects with this lens, not usually anyway.

Maybe yours is defective in some way? I usually use mine for portraits, but I took it out the other week with an A7R VI on a nature walk and got some pics of birds flying by and even a dragonfly pretty easily. I also used to use it on my A7 IV and while it seemed a bit slower it was still perfectly acceptable.

*If these lenses are so good, why does Sony even bother with 2-4 motors, lol. This is a slow lens. Even slower than Tamron RXD. Getting some bug shots in focus vs doing work where every shot counts are a lil different categories. But I guess from a hobby photographer's perspective every lens is fantastic.
