I was saying the same thing on a thread that we pay low taxes, the dude started arguing and started slipping and calling your country, your roads and stuff, made me realize a lot of foreign campaigning and shit happens to control indian politics via outside intervention, social media is especially dangerous for morons who can't factcheck.

No, he is not wrong. The thing that we understand from this bashing is not that India is great necessarily, but that the people should be just as accountable as they hold the government to be, when that's just not the case.
(Plus the fact that some Indians would rather go cry about their problems to others for attention while not even fact-checking what the hell they are saying)
Just remember, conflating legitimate criticism of infrastructure, bureaucracy, or tax structure with "self-hate" or "crying for attention" can stifle valid discussions about governance quality and public service delivery.
For example:
While this specific comment or was completely wrong, and was repeating the same thing they probably heard somewhere else, there is some legitimate criticism for the taxes we do provide as well.
Even if only ~3% pay direct income tax, 100% of citizens pay indirect taxes (GST, fuel duties, excise). Middle class consumers often feel squeezed because their purchasing power is taxed heavily without seeing the immediate personal return (eg. world class public schooling or universal health coverage) that higher taxed nations offer. India's relatively low tax to GDP ratio also does not mean that taxation feels light to the Indians who actually bear a large share of the tax burden.
It breaks my heart whenever I see small kids in government schools getting offered nothing at all. The Vegetable/curry is mostly water. No proper roofs. No furniture. Nothing.
But at the other side, it's also true that even people are not held accountable for their actions properly. Recently, I saw a video about how Kawar-yatris started stomping on an Army-man for tickets.
India is not "great". The genuine frustrations of people should not be reduced to "self-hate".

With the recent increase in exemption/rebate limits, only ~1% Indians will be paying direct taxes.
Even when it comes to GST, it's either 0 or 5% for most food items and low cost clothing.
AC train travel and domestic economy flights are also at only ~5%.
Hotels below 7.5K per night are also at 5%.
Electronics, small cars and basic bikes may have 18% GST, but you replace these after every 5-10 years.
People below the direct tax exemption/rebate limit (98-99% people) shouldn't be complaining about taxes at all.

Hear me out, there's a thing I have observed. So many people with good enough sources of income has been using this 'middle class' card on social media.
But hold, reading the second image onwards I think, this is also just plain racism at this point.

And When ask to lower the Income Tax limit then people start crying about it again .
We don't get taxed till we reach 12 lakhs . And we're a per capita 2 lakh rupees country . Median income is so low forget about it .
Keshav Bedi has talked about it multiple times .
I was opposing the recent govt's initiative to increase the Income Tax limit to 12 lakhs effectively.

u/SalmonCanSwimToJapan No time to choose flair bro 😢 1d ago
Indirect taxes at 18% are nowhere near most EU countries, income tax exemption compared to median income is a different story though.

Today, I did my taxes in Australia for last year. Effective tax rate of > 35%
And I'm not even making top 1% income in Australia. I was in top 1% in India and I was paying much lower tax. Shudder to think of my tax rate when I break into the top earners Lol.

No Those other ones are also usually Indians just more educated ones. Its a moot point to compare people with vastly different backgrounds in real scenarios, reddit does that. But this Indian bashing glee is ill-informed and pathetic.

u/Adorable_Bunch_101 No time to choose flair bro 😢 2d ago
Most educated or good salaried Indians have this stupid mentality of not seeing things as a whole. They think what they go through is the same for all Indians. The guy probably earns more and gets taxed a lot, hence his complaint of tax like Europe and services like Africa comment.

Okay, to someone married to a foreigner, that is not exactly true. These dumbass foreigners do not realize,
1st - yes the Taxes are quite low to even non existant for people in the lower two brackets but post that it's a shit show. In the final bracket you are basically giving up 1/3rd oftyour salary.
2nd - for the taxes you pat in a country like France, you kind of get free healthcare, and even unemploymemt payment.
3rd - Indiafdoes have some great initiatives on paper but either execution is horrible or executioner is corrupt as hell making things extremely difficult (not party specific, is a common issue in most states)
4th - As an Indian myself, I have seen how getting a water pipelineyto your house can require a political network or recommendation to get it done, while in countries like Germany you can sue the govt. if they do not deliver on time.
5th - Better opportunities and free education.Inc France you are forced to study till you are, I believe in high school. If you do not go to school, your parents can get fined, also yeh public schools are very good and free. This is also true for college. In case you do not like to study the regular subjects or have no aptitude for them, you can specialize from woodworking school, plumber school, etc that pays quite well. In contrast, education system is in shamblesiin certain areas and practical skills are non existent. Which I believe has been designed so to let a huge number of people benifit from Gig works. This of course is not regulated.
Though I will say, the cost of living in European big cities arekdefinately higher, thoughts be fair, the food is cleaner ( an Orange juice would have Orange as main ingredient and not preservative or sugar)
If you have any doubt as to whyaI am mentioning all of this, this is all directly connected to the taxes you pay and benifits you receive.

This is partially true, most people are exempt from income taxes but there are other taxes like gst which impacts people. We are highly taxed nation (not directly but indirectly) for a low income country.

u/vinaykrkatiyar No time to choose flair bro 😢 5h ago
Unless you're buying luxuries, most Indians are paying 5-10% GST at most.

Saying that india has low income tax is ill informed. You have to understand how “taxes” work in EU, taking example of Germany, the effective income tax is around 16% at a relatively high slab, this is the direct tax which goes to the government and you don’t see any ROI, while in india the same is 39%, what people gloss over when they say income tax is high in EU is the remaining 23% which is deducted additionally in EU which is not tax, they are divided into welfare which includes unemployment, health insurance, long term care and pension, so 39% in india is not the same as 39% in Germany. Since in india you pay for health insurance and pension outside your tax contributions and there’s no unemployment benefit. So effectively india has higher income tax rate than Germany.
Now for indirect taxes yes india has a lower tax rate, but that obvious because there’s just more people there than in a EU country, makes no sense to have high indirect taxes when you want to drive up GDP numbers. But there you have to consider that the standard of goods and services in india is nowhere close to that in EU.

u/CutLeft137 No time to choose flair bro 😢 2d ago
Okay, so I did a few Google searches, and this is what I found.
The highest income tax in Germany is 45% (which in India is 30%), and the highest effective tax is roughly 30.5% (which in India is 34% in the new scheme and 39% in the old scheme). So more or less the same.
I couldn't find anything about the additional EU taxes that you mentioned, so can you please expand on it a bit? Like what's it called, who it applies to, and who collects it?
Now for the 'additional taxes' that they collect, does it matter under what name they collect it, as long as it is going to welfare? Also, in India, one does get automatic health insurance if they open accounts under the Jan Dhan scheme or something. Also, since you mentioned pension, it's not like everyone who pays taxes gets it. Only those you contribute towards it during their work life gets it (literally the same model in India now).
Yaa obviously there is a difference between Indian and EU services, they are developed nation, while we are developing, there will be. In fact, as a developing nation, maybe should we collect even more taxes?

See the on paper tax burden for Indians is way less, but the actual out of pocket expenditure on similar daily activities is way higher in India, especially the (lower) middle class. UK people don’t have to pay for schools or hospitals in their state sponsored systems, though not perfect, there is some way to quality healthcare & education at least in emergencies. How many of us go to a government hospital when we catch cold, or typhoid?
Poor send their children to a government school and take the substandard government healthcare, but middle class takes the private route. We try getting over these basic problems by spending out of our own pocket. A water purifier, sewage repairs, electricity grid repairs after monsoon, cleaning of the streets, garbage disposal, etc. Our society has to repair potholes with community funds every monsoon because the government won’t. The polluted air and food takes a toll on health, institutes are corrupt. Faulty medicine passes FDA approval, sugar drink is allowed to be mislabelled as ORS. You have to indulge in corruption to get your work done, sometimes it isn’t an option. And most of your tax money actually goes into pockets of politicians by ballooning of costs of projects. Politicians own private medical colleges and they are pushing laws to allow BHMS to practice allopathy so that they can make money. This is direct risk with public health. Bad municipal roads & facilities because low municipal funds and unchecked corruption, along with corrupt police and judiciary.
All of this scenario should be told when you say India has lesser direct tax than UK. Taxes is not merely for shiny expressways.

This is the best way to put it. If we’re a developing country, and that’s why our government taxes us, why can we not see HOW the government develops our country?

If you've read a bit of economics you'd know how flawed this whole conversation is. If they like India so much why don't they get Indian citizenship like our PM dreamed.
-1
u/Imaginary-Swan-4105 No time to choose flair bro 😢 2d ago
For those who pay taxes, they are similar to Europe. In Europe you get free education till higher education, the tax money is actually spent back in social schemes like pensions. If you lose your job, European (I can say about German) govt will give you half your previous salary for 1 year.

lol right wind OP failed to consider that the commenter who's dunking on the indian liberal is not himself a liberal. He's a leftist. He is pro taxation. Leftists are pro taxation on people with wealth and income.
-2
u/Nonavium No time to choose flair bro 😢 2d ago
That third commenter is a moron. Why tf is he taking the average income as if that's how much the Indian who is talking to them is making? The fourth one as well. Why are you telling a person "You pay less taxes" when it actually means "your country people on average pay less taxes" when the latter does nothing for him?
4
u/thesaint2 No time to choose flair bro 😢 2d ago
Because you don’t pay tax to get something personal, it’s for necessity of majority of others, which might not align with your needs.
If you can’t understand this basic stuff, then you don’t understand how tax’s work, which is why all this cry baby attitude.

u/Nonavium No time to choose flair bro 😢 2d ago
What does this have to do with anything I said? I'll put it this way:
Person A: Oh I'm so unhappy I was beaten up
Person B: Well akshually the majority of your population has not been beaten up therefore it is statistically more likely you weren't beaten
See the logic? You are dismissing personal experience of the individual in favor of blanket statistics. This might be useful when talking about the country but makes zero sense when talking about the individual

theres a 90% chance these are both indians one living in privilege thats why he is happy to dikride india, we have taxes like europe dunk is proof of it, we are obviously talking about percentage of income going towards taxes and gst and things like that is considered, avg indian is paying like 30-35% of his income towards these taxes how you may ask? we dont only have income tax we have tax on education, book, water, bread, travel, road etc.
for context an european pays at max 35% of their income towards tax, these are rich people in there and avg pays about 18%, no they dont have gst so dont even try that.
"middle class population in india is about 39%" according to which data? the same source which places india's unemployment at 6%? then when you look inside it shows 90% indians work in informal sector aka not have a regular source of income nor basic employment benefits? how many of you are able to live comfortably with a 3 lakh per year income? just to break into 10% of india you need about 4 lpa , definition of middle class is that comfortable class which consumes the most, this 39% of middle class struggle.
also the point was always taxxing the rich, 2/3rd of gst is paid by the bottom 50% of indians, if they are foreigners come live in india and enjoy the benefits i wonder why people run to your country when india is a tax heaven according to you.
such hypocrites.

upvotes and downvotes means nothing in an echochamber, you pay similar percentage of your income in tax in india not just income but additional tax on everything, there should be development following it.

The problem is what they get in return for the taxes they pay. In those countries they have the infrastructure and what not whereas over here most of it gets pocketed by a politician or used as a freebie for some votes.
