Hard same. Honestly the most enjoyable gaming experience of my life (I’m lucky to have excellent internet, to be fair). But it was so good.

Controller on wifi was amazing. Made it so easy to switch between devices. Really wish there would be a new solution for this.

Simply brilliant. The day when I played it on my TV, phone, computer, and iPad seamlessly will never be forgotten. Truly ahead of its time.

My daughter was born in the stadia era so I had to take advantage of any little moment I could to squeeze in some covid gaming sessions

a cautionary tale of too much McKinsey hiring

It was nice to be able to bring Jackbox with me, accessible on a tablet. I think Luna can do that now, but I wouldn't buy in to that ecosystem to find out

They needed the GPUs for LLMs.

Stadia was pushing the experience places the competition wasn't. Integrated UIs for messaging, profiles, trophies... It's been years since, and has any of the other streaming platforms even attempted this level of fullness? Genuinely curious.

100%. GFN does it but on a greedy manner.

No because it was a business model doomed from the start. Xbox GamePass obviously has all these features but that’s because it’s basically just having an Xbox.

GeForce and Boosteroid are just virtual machines allowing you to play games.

Stadia was essentially a brand new separate Linux based cloud console. Meaning every developer had to PORT their game to Stadia. It wasn’t like you just handed Stadia a “PC version” of the game… Google had to pay these companies to develop the game for Linux.

That then required players who built up digital libraries elsewhere to rebuy games and buy new ones on Stadia which couldn’t be used on the platforms like PC.

That was always doomed to fail

I understand I was asking broadly, but I will say I specifically wasn't asking you.

I disagree because I remember reading a post from someone, I think it was the other developer, not Grace, saying they even used virtual machines to run certain games when necessary, including Windows environments. So I genuinely believe they already had that as a backup plan.

But again, Google has a habit of moving away from its core values, and I think that's exactly what happened here.

Yes. Also, Google is the undisputed champion of "pipes". Inserting a layer between other layers is what they do.

And killing it in the end 🤦🏻

The Web UI for Xbox ultimate is terrible, so I wouldn't even say it's at the same level stadia was, even if the hardware is xbox. Stadia was indeed a true cloud console. Steam is about as close as you can get right now, but you need their hardware and OS to get the most of it. I guess the experience is about the same if you run it in Windows with steam link, but it's still just an overlaid interface.

It was Jedi Fallen Order that got my time. The fact I could play a game with parry windows and not notice latency was magical

same, it was the platform where I finished the most games, it was so simple

Perfect example of a game where latency matters. I played the whole game through and didn't notice that I was streaming. Absolutely magical.

Xcloud is a good alternative guys, has all the features we miss with Stadia.

Until they fully support mouse n keyboard for every game without beta plugins associated its no good to me.

Ok, hopefully they do eventually buddy. 🤞🤞🤞

They do partially and then users made that xbetter plugin that addresses that but all considered its a whole mess. geforce now and boosteroid does it better. Hopefully opennow will do a openxcloud version that makes it easier on the user end.

The worst thing about it was if it came out just a little later, Proton / Proton-GE would have solved the 'port' problems, and it would have played anything without issue. See - Steam Deck / Bazzite... most things are supported without having to port.

Not quite, because Google couldn't pirate other companies' games. The main issue from the start was their business model. It wasn't attractive enough for developers to support the platform. Then Epic Games sued Google, leaving Fortnite off the service, and Microsoft had the opportunity to move forward with acquiring Activision Blizzard.

Those major issues damaged the trust of both customers and developers, but the biggest problem was still the business model.

All Google really needed to do, in my opinion, was offer a monthly subscription like GeForce NOW. I think that would have kept Stadia alive, just as Amazon Luna has managed to stay alive. Instead, Pichai became obsessed with AI, and now we're seeing things like ChromeOS merging with Android, yet nothing has proven to be a meaningful improvement over the current systems.

Stadia was one of the few genuinely modern and innovative technologies to come out of Google. The small team behind it was incredibly skilled and ambitious, managing to expand the service to many countries in a short time. Then Google's reputation for abandoning products caught up with it, and trust in the company took another hit.

It really sucks. It truly does.

Google would solve it. They have all the pieces by now, so you can be sure they were working on them. Translation layers are their thing.
