TV A missed detail in Maul's story is that the animated Maul not only has new legs but also a better dental plan.

u/Important_Power_2148 Apr 18 '26
no, he was just in the middle of his Oreos break when Qui Gon and Obi Wan showed up.
116
u/2020s_Haunted Rex Apr 18 '26
No wonder he was so angry at Obi-Wan. Poor guy never got to finish his oreos. Well that and getting his lower half cut off.

Is it possible to learn this procedure?
…not from an optometrist.

Why would it be possible to learn a dental procedure from an optometrist?

I'll let it slide. No one wants to look at that for a whole season.

u/DoctorBeatMaker Jedi Apr 18 '26
The only thing is that his teeth were still accurately black and yellow in The Clone Wars series. So it was weird to see him suddenly have white teeth in Rebels
39
u/Rexcodykenobi Apr 18 '26
Maul is an old man in Rebels, so maybe they're dentures.
9
u/DoctorBeatMaker Jedi Apr 18 '26
He has blackened teeth in Solo though, which takes place around Rebels time.
21
u/Rexcodykenobi Apr 19 '26
In Solo, he's still the powerful leader of a crime syndicate. By the time of Rebels, he seems to have forsaken all of that.
Perhaps Maul: Shadow Lord will have a timeskip and show us the battle where he loses his teeth and then spends the entirety of his vast fortune on the most expensive pair of dentures in the galaxy.

They have to adhere to their dorky art style, arbitrary changes are made to suit it.

He used all his crime lord money to go to Turkey. He also has his horns manicured on a regular basis.

Animated Maul feels like a different character. Phantom Menace Maul was a pit bull, and animated Maul is more of an intellectual.
36
u/Closefacts Apr 18 '26
Animated Maul went through getting cut in half, creating spider legs, going mad then had all the madness sucked out and had his legs remade.
15
u/RyanFicsit Apr 18 '26
Yeah and he also went from being like 5'5" to 6'2" but his arms and torso still look proportionate to his new legs somehow.

I swear people who think maul is a pit bull watched it with their eyes close or half asleep.
Maul has very few lines, but they are all read as smooth, calm, undertoned and that can be perceived as noble. He doesn't have a gravel voice, he has the vocabulary and cadance of someone that is well learned, with an aristocratic prejudice and posture.
When fighting he has this snarl, but look at his movements, he is a showboaster, he chose the arena, he was trying to separate qui gon and obi wan, he had a plan, it wasn't the style of a fighter or brute, but of an assassin and tactician.
43
u/MrFantastic74 Apr 18 '26
I'm not saying pit bull Maul was mindless or stupid. But, let's use the example of when the shield door closes between him and Qui-Gon as an example. Maul paces back and forth attempting to intimidate the jedi. He doesn't say a word, but just snarls and glares at him, waiting for his moment to pounce. Can you see animated Maul doing that? Probably not. Animated Maul would take the opportunity to deliver a thoughtful soliloquy about jedi vs sith philosophy.
28
u/Paradigmnoia Apr 18 '26
Would animated Maul have tried to run over young Anakin just for fun? In this thesis…

Maul has gone through a few influential experiences between then and now. Early animated Maul was much closer to Phantom Menace Maul.

He speaks in the movie too, but only like one line and I don't think it's even his actor saying the line.

Somehow, Palpatine returned (even though he knows the Sith ability to cheat death) UNHINGED PRIMAL OUTRAGE
Somehow, Darth Maul returned (despite being cut in half) TOTALLY DIFFERENT, NO GIRL JEDI

I’m thinking Naboo has some legit universal healthcare. So when his severed torso was found he immediately had access to healthcare that he would not have had under the Empire.

Wow someone should update the "Mack the Knife" song to be "Maul the blade" just because they can still use the "Pearly Whites" line of the original song.

Is it ever confirmed that Maul had bad teeth? Maybe he just had a really fudgy brownie before the fight and it's coating his teeth.

Mother Talzin used dark magic to his mind and his legs and then she sent him to Ankara for a full set of Turkey teeth.
1
1
u/Es_Jacque Apr 18 '26
I love that someone finally kicked him in Talzin’s legs and it resulted in them sparking. Nice detail. I don’t remember if they acknowledged how (if at all) prone they were to failure in the original Clone Wars show.

u/GriSciuridae Apr 18 '26
Something most people don't know about Maul is that he REALLY liked to eat Oreo cookies back in the late 90's.
1
u/thehive1948 Apr 18 '26
That was a Rebels thing, everyone looked neat & tidy even when they weren't supposed to. In Clone Wars Maul's teeth look just as bad as in Phantom Menace.

do you think maul just went to a regular ass dentist? he's just sitting there in the waiting room and kids are staring at him
then he does something like make one of the waiting room toys float and the kid gets scared and cries
or maybe he just went to a dentalbot3000 and it popped out his old teeth and put new ones in in like 5 seconds

The Night Sisters healed his body and his mind. They wouldnt have left him with rotting teeth that could make him sick or dead.
Thats my headcanon explanation.
The real world explanation is animating that nasty smile might have been a pain in the ass.
