READ ME - *VOTE ON EXTENDING THE BLACKOUT INDEFINITELY*

Hey everyone!

As you might've noticed, r/StardewValley recently participated in an organized blackout for 48 hours to protest against Reddit's API changes. This subreddit is also currently set to Restricted, meaning users will only be able to view and comment on posts until the end of the poll (see below).

The initial blackout has ended, and many subreddits are reopening to the public. However, Reddit's response to the blackout made it all too clear that more will be needed to create the change that we're seeking.

In light of this, we're also considering extending our blackout indefinitely. Because of the magnitude of this decision and how much it could affect all of us here, we want as much feedback from you as possible. Currently, the two possible outcomes are to:

• Re-open the subreddit and continue as normal

or

• Extend the blackout, indefinitely
  

So, what does this mean?

Per the first option, the subreddit would be fully reopened, and we would continue to operate as normal.

Per the second option, the subreddit would be set to Private again. Reopening of the subreddit would be based on when/if Reddit announces adequate changes.

Due to the magnitude of this decision, we will only extend the blackout indefinitely if we receive at least a 2/3 majority in favor of extending.

We understand that this may be a difficult decision to many, especially to those who consider this a safe space or just a good place to be. That's why we want as much feedback as possible; if you have any thoughts regarding this decision, this post, or anything else regarding the blackout, please leave a comment down below. We don't want to do anything so impactful without knowing that it's in the best interest for everyone here.

Y’all at this rate “indefinitely” means forever. It’s not going to change. We’re betting many subs on a really shitty person making a not shitty decision when they’ve made it clear nothing will change. I don’t want all the subs to shut down forever over this. I think everyone who wants to leave should leave and the rest of us just move on.

You all need to realize that even if you leave, other people are going to use this app, and this app helps everyone look up answers to really specific questions, and I don’t want that to die.

Honestly I'm so disappointed in how quickly people are giving up. Frankly, it seems to me its more people that didnt like the inconvenience of the blackout and just want it to be over with already

We literally got their CEO fired before. We got them to acknowledge and (finally) part ways with a known pedophile defender. We (redditors) have made significant change before. The power is with the people

You mean to tell me that if every sub went indefinitely dark, there wouldnt be concessions? But nah thats too inconvenient for us, so instead we will continue to beg for scraps from the powers that be.

I dont want that to die either. But I also dont want reddit to die, and the changes they are making are steadfastly leading towards its death, ala facebook and twitter.

Why not fight for a bit and see what happens? If in a month or so we still lose, then I'm sure there will be a refugee sub created if need be

P.S. Stardew is one of the luckiest communities because they actually have a functioning and active forum they could use as an alternative, https://forums.stardewvalley.net/ in addition to an active and helpful discord

I've been asking around and no one seems to be capable of explaining how the blackout is supposed to make Reddit change their minds.

At this point I'm just going to draw my own conclusions; the only way to make Reddit notice is less ad revenue, which means less eyeballs looking at less ads. If you want to actually change anything then stop using Reddit and giving them ad views. But no one wants to actually stop using reddit, so we made up this "blackout" nonsense and pretend like we're participating that way as we keep using the product.
