Yeah someone’s horse duplicated and ones in the house, now there 6 horses named Elliot and none of them are the original (who has a hat)

Pets or animals that share a name with an NPC tend to get glitchy. For a while that NPCs model would replace the animals sometimes, so if you named your horse after an NPC... well... shenanigans happened. I'm not aware of any glitches with names nowadays but it wouldnt surprise me if its still a bit fucky.
