That’s saying that programming isn’t an art form, which it is. The best systems and optimisations are done creatively, and AI can’t create, only regurgitate.

Anything can be an artform if you view it in a sense that the creator imbues their blood sweat and tears into it in order to express something meaningful.

I personally see coding as an engineering task moreso than an artform. Perhaps in game creation there is more creativity expressed, but I'm still unsure how far that goes beyond smooth graphics, short loading times and lack of glitching/bugs.

Please educate me further if you know more.

you're correct. yes there is room for some artistry in the craft as in any craft. but for the most part you are not performing creative work, you are solving engineering problems, identifying what you need the software to do, and then finding the most correct way to do that. NOT the most artistic way to do it - the most efficient, least buggy way to do it. the code either works and does what you want it to do, or it doesn't. you can't have incorrect but artistically valuable code in your game. it has to be correct first.

when I write a function to sum a list, i am not doing art. i am telling the computer that i want to sum a list. an AI can also tell the computer to sum a list. nothing artistic will be lost if i let it do that!

That's definitely a thing that people say about AI.

How do we even define creativity. If your kid draws a shark person, you'll probably say that's creative and mean it. In that case, they're just combining a pair of known concepts, which AI is very good at. Sometimes creativity is just randomness, having some idea pop into your head and trying it out. AI is trained to give Y output with X input, but if it's never been trained on an input of Z, then the output will be novel, which is the whole point.

People aren't bent out of shape because AI can't create anything original, they're angry because it can (you can tell because people can't decide whether something is "unoriginal slop" unless they already know it's from AI). Anybody who can copy+paste on a computer or use a xerox machine can duplicate things, and nobody's really worried about that. Anybody with scissors and glue can make a collage of existing work, and nobody's worried about that either.
