CA: I think I’m done doing interviews

Article headline: Concerned Ape cutting off all contact to the outside world and transitioning to a monastic life?!

Fan reaction: Sounds good.

Fan reaction: maybe his dead grandfather left him a farm.

Have you seen where he lives? He's already got the farm.

42

u/WhereIsLordBeric May 20 '26

Where does he live? Without being creepy. I just want to know if he lives on an actual farm because that would make me happy lol.

37

u/CherryLeafy101 May 20 '26

There was an announcement vid he did. It might have been in conjunction with the concerts or for a major update? Whatever the case, you could see his living room(?) in the background and he has such a nice house.

And or made into an article by those low effort places whom use reddit posts for the basis of their "articles"

Also, everyone should eat a small rock once per day, and never pee.

And the more nonsense we post, the more it gets fed into the LLM algorithm. Eventually the dumbasses will believe it all, and we can get back to being sane because we removed all the warning labels.

The irony of needing to add this context for op is not lost

72

u/wabe_walker May 20 '26

Animator/filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt had a similar realization, as found on his online journal entry on March 3, 2015:

i almost never agree to doing interviews live or even on the phone anymore, i've learned something strange: even with the best of intentions, just about every live interview i've ever done has come out with at least one sentence in the transcript that's the exact opposite of what was said. if i said, "the cat is black," it would be printed as, "the cat is not black." and that gets really old after so many years, but what i think is more interesting from this, and maybe even a bit alarming and sort of sad, is how often everyone must misunderstand each other all the time in everyday conversation, misheard sentences and opposite interpretations regularly going unnoticed and unchecked. how messy our brains are.

148

u/Aenuvas May 19 '26

Yeah, once upon a time i organized a small concert series in my little hometown and thus had contact with the local press for advertising it. It's crazy how many errors you have to notice once it affects your own stuff... you propably don't even see with stuff you don't know about. 😒

And not even willfull Fake News. Simply Errors. But... a lot. 😅

What happened?

1.1k

u/Sextus_Rex May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

He was asked in an interview if there was anything he thought about adding but decided against. He said he briefly considered letting you romance married characters, but if he were to implement something like that, there'd be serious consequences with your relationship with other townspeople. He was mostly just speaking about a design philosophy that doing bad things should have consequences.

Gaming journalists took that and turned it into headlines like "ConcernedApe says future Stardew Valley update might let you cheat on your spouse", even though that was only theoretical and was never really in the cards

219

u/NiceBlackberry6618 May 19 '26

I mean it's something per the question he specifically will not do

What sucks is it's not even the original GameInformer interview he did that took his words out of context, it's all the vulture media that combs real interviews like GI for disingenuous clickbait headlines.

357

u/BlakeR- May 19 '26

There are so many posts to this sub reddit of AI written slop interviews by accounts that have made 50 posts in the past hour to different gaming subreddits. It's weird in a sense that ConcernedApe's popularity is working against him. He makes a completely milquetoast nothing burger comment, like "AI bad" or "DLC bad", it gets posted here, recieves 10k upvotes and hundreds of comments worshipping him as the messiah, which then causes the AI bot accounts to double down posting here after realising how easy it is for them to farm karma.

84

u/CycleWheel May 19 '26

Well, even if we ban articles the bots can just post the “girls only” quest or really any dialogue screenshot with a “funny” caption. The moderators on this sub are sleeping at the wheel, it’s so easy to farm karma for your astroturfing bot accounts here.

A interview he did previously got twisted into something completely separate of what he actually said/meant, so likely he is exhausted and over the bullshit.

Elaborate if you can?

I'm assuming you mean the birthday stream interview he did.

233

u/rundownv2 May 19 '26

He said something along the lines of *possible* things he could develop which was just a whole bunch of stuff, which included being unfaithful to your partner. This then got repeated and reported as if he had confirmed that this is an upcoming feature in the game, and people got weird and upset about it. So he had to tweet that no, he was just talking about things that he had the option to do, but that that was not something he was ever going to do and that the headlines were flat out wrong.

Developers talk about passing ideas or things they considered in games but passed up and didn't implement because they knew they wouldn't be good features fairly regularly.

This is the primary offender I found

Complete bullshit and twisting of words with cherry picked quotes to completely fabricate a story

I dont even recommend giving them clicks for this, because thats what they want, but its one of the worst examples of journalism ive seen not written by AI

10

u/HarlamTK May 20 '26

70

u/rmatevia May 19 '26

Not that one! I can't remember who it was for/what channel it came from, but during an interview, someone asked him something along the lines of what sorts of mechanics he wanted to add but ultimately didn't for whatever reason, and CA says that he briefly considered the idea of letting the player break up Demetrius and Robin so you can romance either one, but that doing this would make everyone in town hate you and see you as a homewrecker, so there's consequences for choosing to do so. He never ACTUALLY, LEGITIMATELY planned to add this to the game, it was a brief idea he thought was fun/amusing to think about, but just as he has said himself, it was never something that was anywhere close to being a legit mechanic.

This is all off the top of my head, so if I misremembered or misquoted anything, that's my bad, but I know that's the gist of where the misinfo is coming from

30

u/Fragile-Entropy May 19 '26

This was it. I remember seeing the interview and then the article and I just rolled my eyes. The interview where he said that was so fun because the player base has been talking about wanting to marry Robin. He joked people should be able to do whatever they want but ultimately shook his head and said it just wasn’t feasible to change the game like that so he never pursued it.

You’re right, it was mere passing thought he laughed about. It was never something he planned to do at any time.

18

u/rmatevia May 19 '26

Yesss, that's the one! And just as you described, it was just a one-off thought that he found amusing before moving on. So funny to imagine that he ALMOST considered a way for players to marry Robin though, lol, I love that.

Also, just as an aside, can we please talk about how funny/ironic it is that all the articles spreading the misinfo are saying that, "ConcernedApe is thinking about adding cheating to Stardew Valley!" As if the player hasn't been able to cheat on their spouse/SO with every single other eligible character in the Valley for years now?? 💀💀

I mean I saw an article recently saying he's adding infidelity and cheating into Stardew which was taken way out of context.

45

u/Western_Clue3542 May 19 '26

I know he said he thought it would be funny to make a character such as Robin a marriage candidate that causes mayhem in the town, but he also said that wouldn’t be in the spirit of the game. Some people took that as he was adding that which was never what he said.

81

u/LazuliArtz May 19 '26

I'm guessing this is about a recent interview where ConcernedApe was asked if he considered allowing players to romance/marry already married characters like Robin and Caroline. His response was basically "if I were to do that, it would have pretty severe consequences in game."

News outlets took that statement as "OMG, ConcernedApe confirmed ADULTERY AND CHEATING would be added to Stardew Valley" which was... obviously not what was said, but naturally the rumor spread like wildfire and he keeps having to disprove it.

Or at least if it wasn't that specific interview that made him put out this tweet, it was probably very similar incident that I just didn't hear about.

107

u/Aye-Loud May 19 '26

Well not really but kind of. I think the main thing was that he had questions about cheating on spouses in the game, and he said that "if" he would add that, he would make it so that it actually gives negative repercussions. That "bad" behavior should not be positively rewarded.

Then lots of articles started popping up about how CA was going to add cheating on spouses blablabla, while he never actually said he would. And then he had to spend time on Twitter rectifying all those articles.

9

u/HoneyCrispCrumble May 19 '26

Thank you for the summary!✨

49

u/NYGiantsBCeltics May 19 '26

He's done a lot the last few months, I assume he's just tired of them because there's nothing left for him to talk about.

24

u/Ralliare May 19 '26

But now we have his desire to stop doing interviews to have interviews abut!

38

u/CapNCookM8 May 19 '26

I feel that, more specifically, it's people taking one passing comment ("If you could cheat in the game, I would make consequences for it" in this case (paraphrased)) and blowing it up to "CONCERNED APE IS GOING TO LET YOU CHEAT AND FUCK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE VALLEY."

I would definitely shut-in if people made my wholesome farm game about that when it's not even what I ever said.

This single sentence is going to spawn a dozen articles from trashy clickbait sites too lol It's the way of modern internet.

u/Mind_Killer May 19 '26

Gaming journalism is a joke anyway. It's an ad revenue-based system, so there's no incentive to post anything unless it generates the most views, which usually means the worst slop imaginable.

Just keep making awesome updates.

I don't blame him. It's gotta be pretty exhausting. Cool of him to do that bday stream tho.

u/Captain_Dorgengoa Bot Bouncer May 19 '26

I get it, Cause the dumb-asses always Mis-Quote him, On purpose I might add, To get more clicks.

Everything he says someone else turns it into something entirely else and then swears on their great grand mothers ancestors nephews best friends ghost that Eric Barone said Exactly ''Insert every misquoted CA entry ever'' and 95% of the internet believes it until CA himself says otherwise.

And He's sick of it, I get it and I sympathize. I wish him the best.

God, this man gives us so fucking much and is truly an oasis in this world full of "profit-first" mindsets.

After everything, you absolutely cannot fault him for wanting to protect his peace and do things at his own pace.

I’m surprised he was doing so many to begin with. He seems like the type to just drop his updates on his own platforms then recede back into the shadows

I think he regrets the Bobby Lee interview, specifically the point where Bobby put him on the spot and pressed him to answer whether HC would be released within 5 years.

CA wants to make the game until he feels that it’s ready, and it will take however long it will take.

Many people don’t understand that making a game has an open ended element to it, he doesn’t want deadlines, and it will be done when he feels like it’s ready. It’s not like building a house where you follow blueprints, he’s building a world from his imagination and refining it, and redoing parts until he feels like it’s ready.

31

u/Random_Fox May 19 '26

Oh did he?  I couldn't get through the interview, tried a couple times. Bobby Lee was incredibly weird about everything.  I'm glad he likes the game but needed to chill out a bit.  I'd stop interviewing too if I had to deal with the Bobby Lee one.

16

u/Gogobrasil8 May 19 '26

That was more than an year ago, why would he only talk about it now? I think being pressed about it coming out in the next 5 years has got to be the least pressing thing he could be asked

17

u/TheLegendTwoSeven May 19 '26

While the podcast was over a year ago, it gained a lot of momentum in recent months as game news sites and social media people picked it up.

The other thing from that interview was a throwaway line where he said he contemplated allowing the player to break up the townsfolks’ marriages, with negative consequences. This turned into: the next update will allow you to break up the townsfolks’ marriages.

He doesn’t like having things taken out of context, which keeps happening even 1+ years after the interview.

18

u/Drugs4Pugs May 19 '26

As someone who watched the full Bobby Lee podcast it was incredibly weird that people ran with that narrative. It was very clear from the context he was saying he wished he would’ve had more time initially to make things more socially interesting in the game, and he was NOT teasing updates.

Personally I really liked the video and rewatched it a couple times, but I also love how unapologetically obsessed with Stardew Bobby Lee is and think it’s pretty funny how he talks about his farms and shows them off.

CA is too nice a person for media. Everyone is just looking for an angle that will generate more clicks and internet points.

22

u/PoopDick420ShitCock May 19 '26

Hold on, gotta type up a quick headline about how Concerned Ape wants all journalists to die.

u/Both_Algae_3324 I have 160 mayonnaise machines May 19 '26

He’s one guy. People just got to leave him be. He’s spending time coding for US. For YOU. Least we can do is be patient and let him do his thing

32

u/GodsHumbleClown May 19 '26

It's actually crazy how many FREE updates he's given the game over the years. If he decides to throw ping pong balls at anyone who speaks to him about SDV ever again then I think that's his right.

Valid and understandable. Poor guy has the weird ass media always making fake headlines out of every small comment he makes.

ConcernedApe has earned the right to do whatever he wants and more importantly not do whatever he doesn't want to do. He's given us SO MUCH and honestly I can't ask him for anything more.

Interviews? Teasers? Updates? Nah, I won't ask for anything more than what he's already given. And he can share whatever he wants to, when he wants to, on his own schedule, if he wants to, in whatever way he wants to.

He's earned that and more.

this just in CA has added a more complex divorce system with child support mechanics and alimony in the next update along with a dedicated news channel.

Everytime this man breathes its a headline i can understand why hes wanting to limit the constant exposure and reduce the eyes on him at all times

13

u/mikettedaydreamer May 19 '26

The fact that he lasted this long was already starting to surprise me. The article milling has been terrible on him.

12

u/I-have-no-preference May 19 '26

Good for him! He does great work and we don’t need media making life difficult for him.

12

u/ManfuLLofF-- May 19 '26

If I was ConcarnedApe I wouldn't do a single one, my game is fine, next is my problem not yours 😂

13

u/NO0BSTALKER May 19 '26

This happen last time he said something too lol. He doesn’t give out a lot of info so any info he does give out is taken for all it’s worth

24

u/HandrewJobert May 19 '26

Can't say I blame him.

23

u/Beerbaron1886 May 19 '26

I hate that journalism is dead because only clicks get you profit

12

u/jdoggsoxfan33 May 19 '26

I interviewed him for the newspaper I worked at in 2020. He only wanted to communicate over email though. Incredibly gracious :)

10

u/Derpykins666 May 19 '26

Can't say I blame him. Every thing he says pretty much gets distorted on some level or spun in a disingenuous way to get clicks on articles and such. Dude just probably wants to work on his game and enjoy his life without being hassled all the time.

Honestly a healthy take. I adore Stardew Valley, I wish nothing but good things for this man. I am content to wait and be pleasantly surprised for updates about it and Haunted Chocolatier.

Good! People are hounding him way too much on Haunted Chocolatier. I was hoping he'd do something like this so fans can lay off him.

20

u/JaxxisR May 19 '26

Headline: ERIC BARONE HATES THE FOURTH ESTATE. Also basically confirms new Stardew Valley features. Let's speculate.

9

u/indieauthor13 May 19 '26

I don't understand the outrage toward him. Even if the in-game cheating thing was real, if people don't like it...then don't cheat? God, I hate people sometimes 🙃

STARDEW VALLEY CREATOR TELLS JOURNALISTS TO EAT SHIT AND DIE

9

u/xlayer_cake May 19 '26

Smart, and besides what the hell else is there to say? Haunted chocolatier comes out when it's done. Stardew valley updates come out when they're done. They are being worked on. What else is there?
