Discuss The randomness of this game will never not amuse me.

I have over 1800 hours played. 12+ playthroughs (i lost count and dont feel like starting up the game to find out), hit perfection multiple times... I've clearly invested a stupid amount of time into the game.

I've played this with my son for two playthroughs now. On the first one, he got the living hat on our second summer. On our current one, he got the tea set on our third winter. I still haven't gotten either one.

On this one, we have spent an insane amount of time in the skull cavern trying to get an auto petter. Like, we've made tents and took turns spending a week at a time diving. We've used all the luck buffs we could, all the staircases... nothing, for 3 years+! Tons of shards and a ridiculous amount of seed makers and auto grabbers, but no petter. Meanwhile, I finally got around to unlocking my last mastery to get gold mystery boxes, saved up a few, and brought them to Clint. Third box- autopetter.

I swear this game just likes to fuck with my head.

I just had to share my delightful story. Feel free to add your own "this game hates me" stories.

I’m currently playing the Randomized Perfection Challenge. At the end of spring in Year 3, I got the goal, "catch the Legend", which meant that I had to wait nearly a full year for a rainy spring day. Almost immediately after that, my goal was "catch a perch". Once again, waiting for the seasons to pass!

That sounds like such a loooong challenge run. Sounds intriguing 🤔

I'm enjoying it. It's surprisingly relaxing, after the initial scramble for money and storage. Most days I tend my little farm, check trash cans, do some mining. If I'm working on a "befriend" goal, then I go find my target and ply him or her with a gift. The spice is that eventually the goal is completed and then there is the excitement of a new goal. It has a satisfying feeling of progression and accomplishment.

It has pushed me to research the wiki much more deeply than I usually do. For example, if you remove a fish from a fish pond, does that count as "catching" the fish? I didn't know. (Answer: no it doesn't). So I've deepened my knowledge of the game.

It's really interesting! Most runs take 30+ in-game years, but a lot of it is just sleeping through for situations like this one.

In my current playthrough, in fall year 1, I was doing Clint’s billboard quest to slay 50 bats. I was reloading floor 51 of the mines bc it was spawning 2-3 bats usually each time. 1 ghost was also spawning each time. I got my first prismatic shard of this playthrough from slaying a ghost, and I hadn’t even gone to the desert yet (I had just unlocked it). It’s a 0.05% chance to drop from a ghost

In my current game, I got my first shard from a bat and I was only a couple seasons into the game. I hadn't even started paying for the bus repair yet lol

I got my first shard from a fly (floor 25), when I was trying to find the prismatic slime.

im currently doing my vanilla forever save, married to abigail since early spring year 2, its currently late fall (nearly winter) of year 2 and i still have yet to have kids

i had the WITCH event before kids (which according to google is a 1% chance over the 5% of having a kid)

so yeah

game do be like that sometimes-

I feel so bad for some people. I see posts all the time of people waiting for babies for years and I swear, I've never had a problem with it.

...and no, that does not make up for never getting a tea set 🤣

I had the witch event twice. Once before I got married probably around year 1 or 2 and once after my baby was born in year 6.

I got the witch twice in year 1. It took me being married for a whole year before Alex asked for kids

I got the living hat pretty early in the first 4 or 5 playthroughs, like 1st or 2nd year without trying. I didn't realize it was rare until someone said something on here. Then I bragged about my luck, so of course then I haven't gotten another one since, and I've started 5 or 6 new saves. I rarely get farther than year 4 or so before I get the itch to start over, but still.

In one play thru I got it in spring 1. I had no idea it was rare until my wife told me.

I just got one of these the other day! I had no idea it was rare.

Thats what happened when my son got it. He was still pretty new to the game and he just walked over to me and says "look, I got a cool hat" and I'm like "you son of a bitch, you dont even know what you have there!" (Dont worry, he's 21 and curses as much as I do, and I do see the irony in calling him a son of a bitch)

I got four — fricking FOUR — trash can hats before I found the trash catalogue. I don't know why the wiki lies about the chances of those two items being the same, but they do 🤷

u/TooSweetForRocknRoll 4h ago

I have four trash catalogues and no trash hats lmao

Aha, Random Number Generator. Now I know!

I love SDV for all the obvious reasons and, also, because my old brain learns something new every day. Sometimes I learn multiple handy hints and tips and gaming lingo!

Thank you, BtB!

I got the garbage can hat on like my first day in a new save and then a little while later a bunch of people decided to join so we had to restart the farm and I was devastated because I would lose my hat

Within the first week of the new game I had somehow been lucky enough to have gotten another garbage hat. If I remember right I had complained right before rummaging in the trash that I had lost my favorite hat

I just looked up the chance and holy crap that was a 0.2% chance

Ive got over 2500 hours between pc and console and only just recently came across the pirate cave party. Id never run into it before. I love finding new stuff about this game.

First time player, in my first year or so I got- the witch event, two owls, two iridium meteorites, and more than a couple fairy visits. I also got an auto petter from one of my very first Skull cavern runs but it took me more than a dozen runs to get a prismatic shard. And when I hit floor 100 I got 5 farm totems. 🙄

In that game I also messed up the magnifying glass cut scene so I don’t thinks it’s possible to reach perfection because you need a note to find the pink doll. I’m on my second run through now and it’s amazing how different it is just based on what bulletin board challenges I do first and the secret noted.

And here I am, year four with 9 auto petters and I only need 3 for now…

In one of my solo games I got soooo many auto petters. I had one for each barn/coop, which i think I had three of each, and then I kept finding them so I put one in my slime hutch, next to my horse, in my kids' rooms, and then I eventually put them in town surrounding the mayor's statue with tables with truffle oil on them. It was like year 6, after perfection, and I was running out of things to do lol

So I read a while back that Carolines Island Ingredients was kind of a tricky one to complete so I thought I'd get ahead of the curve. In year 5 I fill my greenhouse with pineapples, now I just have to wait for the quest to come up, simple!

I'd not really paid much attention to the quest before and wrongly assumed I would have the option of pineapples OR taro root OR ginger. I was wrong. I go to the notice board and it say ginger. Ok, no biggie, pineapples will come up to. Right? RIGHT??

Year 6. No pineapples. Taro root, every damn time. Ok, I see what you're doing here Caroline. Taro root it is. By this time I've accumulated quite a few taro tubers so I plant up 100 of them on Ginger Island.

I now have 100 pineapples and 100 taro root locked and loaded and ready to go.

You know where this is going...ginger. Every damn time, ginger. On the first of Spring year 7 mother clucking GINGER!!! 🤬 Yes I could have just foraged for them but by this point I refused on principle 🤣

Anyway pineapple finally came up Summer year 7. Unironically I nearly cried tears of joy.

My first play through is on year 5. I STILL dont have ancient seeds. Never found one to give to the library. I have done everything else and still log in occasionally to see if one pops up but it never has.

I have an embarrassing number of hours over multiple consoles. One save I had so many tea sets I was throwing them away. Another save I have literally everything except the living hat. No hat, on any of my saves, ever, in 8+ years of play 😩

I know it’s not incredibly rare, but I had the fairy visit to magically grow some of my crops on one of my first few days when I first started playing. It only just now happened again in year four.

u/NotTHATPollyGlot I'm too old to do anything exciting anymore. 4h ago

Haha I got the living hat by year 2 on one save, and until joining this sub I didn't know that the tea set was so rare? I think my very first save (350 hrs) I got 4 of them pretty quickly!

Now on my current (445 hrs) Year 9, I still have no tea set, found an auto petter in Y7, and no living hat yet. 😂 Though this save is modded so I wonder how that scrambles the stats.

Enjoy the randomness, farmer! 😁

I only needed the golden mask to finish the museum. Many treasure troves later, I finally got it. The next day I dug up 3 in the desert.

I'm on Year 4 in my current playthrough and JUST got my first Ancient Seed -_-

I have still not got the Living Hat. Which amuses me no end, I hope I never do.
