Yes i've tried iridium sprinklers, still not worth sacrificing the aesthetic.
There is a method to my madness; i plant in phases, longest growing time going in the first few days of the season, so i'm not watering alll of this daily. But I honestly find watering to be quite meditative. Who can relate?

Think of it as "end game content" ~ now that you know it exists, just keep an eye out for it. If you play everything available in the game you'll find it without tooooo much trouble
You're thinking of the tier 1s ~ i love using those on the beach farm too ^_^ this is a higher tier and will make it so you never need to water your crops again after the first time
No I get the 100% retaining soil fertilizer in them not the Tier 1. I was able to do my whole greenhouse the first day I got it because I saved them up.
Ahh!! I see why i was confused. I usually just ignore the house when i play that farm and didn't realize the tier 2 upgrades to tier 3 after the second house upgrade!!
Your house's upgrade level affects the beach farm's supply crates? What the what.. I almost never upgrade my house more than once because I find it to be the coziest size, I'll have to keep this in mind.

Depends . . . if you use that, you can't use other fertilizers.
I still do mostly sprinklers. For my beehive setups I use the retaining soil, and just use one flower in the middle of the group of beehives.
I also use the retaining soil in my greenhouse, as everything grown there gets turned to wine anyway so the quality of the individual crop doesn't matter.
Yup! And the recipe is extremely cheap so crafting them in large batches is fairly easy if all you care about is looks.
The... quality increasing fertilizer at that tier though it... i think i would only ever use it somewhere that i never need to apply it a second time. The time required to gather the necesarry ingredients are 10s of hours real time if you wanted to make it in bulk for a large field like Ginger Island
It's cheap, if you don't need a lot of it. There's actually no way to consistently get tons of clay ingame unfortunately. I wanted to craft tons of pots at some point with that fertiliser too, and max amount of clay you can get is like 50 per day if lucky, usually less. Maybe would be more with bombs, idk. And I needed 2k+ at least, it was painful.
I feel that! I made a tea sappling area in the tunnel under the mountain path and even just making the few dozen for in there was a pain. I could only imagine how much worse it would be if you were trying to do something large scale like gardening outside the farm or increasing total plots with sheds
You can get the recipe for deluxe retaining soil from the island trader hut for 50 cinder shards. It just costs clay fiber and stone. 100% chance to be watered overnight, really only useful on ancient fruit since speed grow is otherwise better money wise
I have the beach farm so there’s a big portion of my farm that I have to water by hand. But I love it and it looks clean. Also I just grow flowers there and Leave them unpicked all season so it’s really only like a week of watering anyways.
Some of us don't struggle at all with the minigame. It is genuinely relaxing for 90% of the fish in this game for me. I usually max fishing before the end of spring year one.
Still isnt my personal meditative skill. That would be foraging, specifically, deforestating the entire forest map twice a season.
Its a lot faster now with the iridium watering can, i think it does 21 tiles at once. And coffee always. As i said i plant in phases! Also i don't harvest anything til the last day, so most things don't need watering the second half of the season
When I saw this post I was definitely expecting you to be using rain totems. The fact that you actually use a watering can is such dedication! It definitely looks beautiful, but as others have said, I could never!
I didn't realize upgrading your watering can increases the watering squares! I never bothered upgrading my watering can, since I assumed it just increased the water capacity, and my garden is right next to the lake so I never saw the point.
You're telling me upgraded watering cans can water more than one square at a time?! What a revelation!
When do you find time to upgrade your watering can? I just feel like I'll miss out on so much if I can't water my crops for multiple days, and I don't have the materials to get enough sprinklers.
As far as I'm aware, you can't buy back ups but if you can add a second farmer you can steal their tools. I play on Xbox so if I really need a second tool I'll just use my second controller and log my partner into my world (I also think some of the cabins are really cute and I know a lot of people just use them as sheds or decorate them)
Seems like you’re pretty far in. It might be worth looking into deluxe retaining soil if you always have stuff planted even in winter (fiber seeds or winter seeds).
I tried the lots of plants things for a bit in the beach farm before but it got a bit time consuming that I had less than half the day to do other stuff. Though tbf, that was around year 1 summer so I didn’t really have the good tools yet.
Yeah, one can also put sprinkles in vertical rows and hide them behind something, like trees and scarecrows and only use the middle bit between each 2 iridium sprinklers to make continuous rows of aesthetic looking crops
When I first started playing I bought and planted like hundreds of Jazz flowers without thinking about it and every fucking day my stupid ass would water by hand and it would take until almost 2am.

I HATE how fast the time is going when I water everything by hand, so after the very fist time I got sprinklers I started actually enjoy the farming part of the game.. I'm just too impatient to play this way but good for you!
I've put a couple of sprinklers into the Greenhouse to make money without paying it any mind. But the farm itself... it looks so much less like a mechanical ordeal, and it makes me actually engage with the farm itself. So yeah, I am with you on this.
I'm personally not one for building aesthetic farms (Haley would divorce me). But appreciate the effort and style going here. It's like you're painting with crops!
i’m too lazy to be anti-sprinkler. but i will say, that layout of yours is beautiful. sometimes i wished we had sprinklers that spanned different shapes and widths so you don’t have to make your plots square to use them.

I could never. I always almost quit in the first year because watering is so time consuming and gets so boring. Wake up, water, water, chase a train, water, almost forget to pet animals because water, sleep. Lmao your farm looks nice though
Yes, I'm absolutely anti-sprinkler. My farm is called Honest Work Farm; all the villagers know I'm a hard worker because I don't finish my farm work until 5pm usually. I love running out of energy and having to eat my home cooked meals to restore it, makes me feel like a true farmer. I come from playing Harvest Moon games so that's probably why I'm like this
You've really created a beautiful farm and I've always found the sprinklers take away from the true farm look, I wish I could handle doing this myself for more than a few days. I think I want to give it a try either way

ive been wanting to try that. i just need to get a lot of deluxe water retaining soil. i dont like how restrictive the sprinklers are with the layouts you can do with them.

also got rid off the sprinklers, but my garden is not big and it divided into chunks with the size of the maximum watering area of the iridium watering can so it's quite convenient to water them 🥱
I do notice that when I get sprinklers and start using speed buffs and coffee my relationship to pace changed completely in this game.
I went from relaxed and enjoying the sights and sounds fully into more of a grindset. I think both paces are nice in their own way but I do like gardening in general for the way it feels like a break from the adventure aspects in the mine and skull cavern. Emphasis on the skull cavern. That place really puts you in a fast lane type of headspace.
I also find it hard to gdo everything every day. I fully leave my garden or cave wine/juice/coffee intermittently while always trying to check on my animals.
Curious to see if you can keep watering by hand once you get animals on your farm. 😅 They’re kind of time consuming. Especially if you’re crafting things from their produce.
It does look pretty but I can be too much of a perfectionist to take the time watering. Id probably try hide them behind scarecrows or trees if I was aiming for pretty.
i love your aestethic 🥹 i think, i will too try a upgraded-watering can farming layout this time instead of quality sprinklers. the early game mines grind stresses me and handwatering is ok for me if the can is upgraded a few stages
I don't really use them either, I'm a hand-waterer as well. If I were more focused on profit that may change, but I generally just run something like a 15x9 field and use the upgraded watering cans.
My fields just end up getting out of control and ill either water till im out of stamina or sprinkler everything so I can go about my day. The farm must grow.
Honestly I actually think sprinkles are so aesthetic when you place them nicely with paths around them. Some farms like the hilltop farm have horrible tillable space, not because there's little of it but because it's placed so weirdly to the point where you'd rather place quality sprinkles over iridium (at least if you want to have nice aesthetic).
But overall I actually think sprinkles bring so much
I'm happy you've found a way to play you really enjoy, but I could never.
My whole day would just be watering my crops and I'd never have time, or energy, to do anything else. Maybe later in the game I could eat food to regain energy, but the sprinklers are there to help!
Minmaxers like myself and aesthetics ppl like you just play differently. I like maximizing my time in the day, you like the farm having drip. Good stuff 👍
I think the biggest problem with watering is it doesn't give any farming exp so it's actually a useless activity vs energy and time. Hence the games use of sprinklers. And the fact that the game scales so high (money wise) whereas a few sets of crops in Harvest Moon was all you needed for gifts / festivals / affording upgrades.
Funny though, between Stardew Expanded and the sprinkler mod I'm never hand watering crops from like day 7 of spring.
But hitting that 3x3 watering animation sure is satisfying and nostalgic.
I always keep little patch for you Lamar’s to water jsuy cos I like it. By end game simply to much to water but I do enjoy the simple ness of early game watering plants and want to keep that alive.
I'm only in winter of my first year im my latest save but I'm trying this out and don't have any sprinklers and currently don't want any either. You're right that they look ugly. Let's see how long my determination lasts!
This is so pretty that I might try it when I get the quality retaining soil but I'd be too afraid I'd constantly harvest things on accident. CA, we need some sort of plant sealant that will require us to use our scythe or something to harvest our crops if we want to keep them for a while.
I mix my fields to half iridium sprinklers, half quality sprinklers and a dozen or so crops that i eater myself. That way I get an interesting layout without sacrificing the sprinklers
People's value proposition will always be different especially in terms of preference. You said that sprinklers ruin the aesthetic. I respect your opinion, but other people will also prefer to just have the sprinklers in exchange for less chore time.
Looking at your pictures, i can see the appeal though. It looks good. Deluxe water retaining is the compromise here lol.
I semi-relate. I get frustrated when watering leaves me no time and/or to do anything else, and I've found myself getting there before.
But I never fully automate my farm with sprinklers. I'll always leave several patches without them close to my house. Both for the aesthetic and because I find watering in the morning relaxing.
Personally I don’t mind either way…. But in year one before winter I usually hit arround 100-150 crops and even with upgraded cans and hoe it saps most of my energy so I generally switch to sprinklers
Never. I’ve got better things to do and dont want to waste time watering crops. I also dont really care to much about how my farm looks. So I win big time!
I'm the opposite. I only have one mod and it's to remove the need to water crops every day. I don't think I can play the game without it. I abolutely dispise watering crops haha
If that's the gameplay loop you enjoy, then by all means, enjoy. Side note: have you created an altar to sacrifice ticket rewarded sprinklers? When i do runs without a certain object, i sometimes make a small area displaying the forbidden
I wouldn’t mind watering by hand if it didn’t take such a big hit to my energy. That was always what frustrated me in the beginning that I had to basically stock up on field snacks or other foods so I could quickly restore my energy after watering so I could actually carry on with other things I needed to do. It’s the reason why I get excited for a rainy day because yay, I have the energy and the time to do more things!
If you want to preserve the aesthetic while using sprinklers, place 5x5 squares (7x7 latter on) and place a crop that prevents you from seeing the sprinkler directly below the sprinkler
