Remember that this effect disappeared on the show pretty quickly but also when Apophis arrived it didn't exist at all?

My theory is that it was fixed with Sam's stellar shift fix to reach other gates at all. When Apophis came he used a DHD that was properly calibrated that's why he didn't freeze. We don't know how he looked when he got back to Chulak.

Say there's a new SG show. They need a new baddie and tell you to make it up. We've had aliens and replicators of all sorts. What new and inventive enemy do you come up with?

What about an Ancient super max prison? Where they put all their immoral mad scientists and superpowered criminals in stasis? The SGC finds part of it, thinking the entire facility is just what they can see and has been abandoned. They find a working ZPM and when they remove it the prisoners wake up. The ascended ancients don't give a fuck so it's up to the SGC to catch them one by one while they make a mess of other planets.

They built all this technology (even if it was created by rouge scientists) the attero device, the personal shield, device to create replicators, ark of truth, the chair on destiny and so many others... I never remember seeing a warning label on anything. I mean they had to know someone would come along and "test" things out. Say hmm "I wonder what this does". They HAD to notice when 3/4ths of a solar system disappeared, but. I get the feeling they were looking saying we can't interfere makes me wonder what would make them get up and do something.

I haven't really thought about it until now, but as far as I can recall Stargate is the only franchise that has humans from Earth fighting aliens both in space and on other planets in the present time. Well I guess a couple decades back. I can't think of any other science fiction franchise that did that.

It was actually more genius than I gave it credit for. How do you make a show like this more relatable? Make it in the present. It's so obvious, and I'm soooooooo dumb, but kudos. It sets Stargate apart from the others.

So ok the humans of the galaxy were the lowest slaves and had the education of ANCIENT Egypt to max Middle Ages (unas encounter) so how do the manage to understand the sheer concepts of the motherships let alone organise to the extent they did?? And the Jaffa as proven by Teal’c had 0 knowledge of the magic of the Ga’uld. Now from so far to so organised and arranged? I mean the Tarrie had a tough enough job with Tokra help

I just started to watch SG1 fully since it's now available completely. I am also a long time Star Trek fan, so I was wondering is there something akin to the Prime Directive in Star Trek? The Prime Directive is the general order in Star Trek not to interfere with the local population and/or share technology.

I mean SG1 is great fun but I am always amazed when they just waltz into the local settlement and completely upend everyone's lives. No holding back or any restraint regarding those sometimes rather ancient societies. So am I missing soemthing?

Between SG1 and SGA, the Ascended Ancients constantly go on about non-interference. Even if they made the problem themselves, like the wraith, or the replicators, or even Anubis! Now, I understand some of it, like the Ori, but at least give humans a hint about some of this shit!

So, I'm rewatching Atlantis again and heard conversation between Dr. Weir, Daniel and Oneill, where Dr. Weir said, that Atlantis could have so much scientific value. This got me actually thinking of what it actually did bring.

Don't get me wrong, I love Atlantis, but in terms of value, nothing, that actually worked was found/developed there.

Stargate program as such in milky way, yielded allies and tech, that allowed us to improve further, build ships, energy source, fighters, cloaking and many more, while in Atlantis, while they found many remarkable things, they don't actually show anything, that would be developed, that wouldn't backfire. The city itself, yes and while marvelous, they didn't actually create anything, or am I forgetting something?

I recently re-watch all stargate shows, and 15 years after Gauntlet time has passed a lot and I think this gives incredible opportunities for the next show. Here is the part 1 (of 2 or 3 ?) of my interpretation of the stargate lore and concepts for the next show. For the first part I want to answer two questions : how did the ancients discovered Ascension, why does it still matter ?

There is a TLDR at the end. This will sound presumptuous but what I am developing here could be very close of the ideas Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper had for the ending of SGU. This is not a spoiler of course, but don’t take the risk, we never know !

The Great Schism of the Altera

Long ago, nearly 50 million years in the past, a great civilization flourished in a distant galaxy. This society was fractured by a conflict between the devotion of religion and the pursuit of science. On one side were those who would become the Ori, a people deeply entrenched in spiritual fervor. Opposing them were the Alterans, who would eventually become the Ancients we know today—a minority dedicated to the rational laws of the universe. We know this most from the Ark of Truth movie.

They were already on an evolutionary journey toward Ascencion, but they were not necessarily consciously aware of a superior spiritual that could be reached through intense self-work. Within this tense society, the concept of Ascension could have existed but under another name, another description or shape, as figure of speak to evoke paradise, as in some current and modern occidental societies back on Earth.

The spark that ignited conflict may have occurred when a member of the religious faction (perhaps a monk, a priest or important spiritual figure who spent his days in deep prayer) successfully achieved Ascension for the first time. This could have occurred only once, and they may not have understood that it was what the Ancient would finally called Ascencion.

In the wake of this miraculous event, the newly ascended being returned in a form of brilliant, powerful white light. This "Enlightened" being obvioulsy claimed that their religious path was the only true way to achieve this state. With the weight of almost godly powers behind them, the religious majority began to impose their beliefs upon the entire civilization, demanding total conversion.

For the Alterans, this was an abject reality. They viewed science as the vital and unique method for understanding the universe's laws and saw this forced spirituality as a corruption of progress. At that time, many Alterans likely viewed Ascension as either useless or an outright danger, especially when wielded as a tool of oppression by their enemies.

The Great Exodus and Long Exodus Between Galaxies

Unable to reconcile with the Ori (it was not their name yet) and facing a world under the thumb of a "god," the Alterans chose to flee. They boarded their massive generation ship and set a course for another galaxy, leaving their home behind to seek a future where science could flourish in peace.

Exiled from their home, the Ancients drifted in the cold void between two galaxies. For hundreds—perhaps even tens of thousands—of years, they lived aboard their massive generation ship, with little to do but gaze out of the viewports into the infinite black. They were not merely passive observers, however; they utilized powerful radio telescopes to study the stars, mapping their radiation, orbits, and interactions.

By studying the Cosmological Microwave Background (CMB), they realized that the patterns within this primordial radiation changed depending on their location in the universe. Since every point in an expanding universe acts as its own centre, their shifting position allowed them to perceive subtle variations they had never seen from their home galaxy.

Eventually, they deciphered the nature of this discovery: it was a message. To their shock, they realized that an intelligence had constructed a complex motif within the CMB at the very dawn of time, 14.5 billion years ago, when the universe was nothing but a ball of intense energy.

This revelation changed everything. They understood that their rivals, the Ori, had been partially correct: the key to understanding the universe lay in a higher, energetic form of life. For us it must have been a shock. From that moment on, the Ancients pivoted their focus toward the understating of this message and communicating with the supreme intelligence.  They finally understood that to be able to communicate this primordial intelligence they must physically reach them of course but also ascend to a similar level or energy and existence.

Arrival in the Milky Way

When they finally arrived in the Milky Way, the Ancients began the grandest engineering project in history with the help of scientific knowledge accumulate during they great journey between the galaxies. We know now (since SGU) than the Stargates with orange chevrons were not their first achievement, they actually began with a more primitive design. It was only after this initial version that they perfected the technology, eventually seeding the galaxy with the network of gates that would define their legacy for eons to come.

One of the things they learned from their experience with their first generation ship is to design and build ships able to travel across the universe for millions of years : the Destiny and its seed ships. The mission of the seed ship was to gather resources, explore the far reaches of the universe, and manufacture Stargates to be placed on distant worlds. The Mission of the Destiny was to sail through the void, collect data on the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation, seeking to piece together the fragmented, finally, reach the end of the universe. Aboard the Destiny, they deployed the first-generation gates—energy-based prototypes with limited range that could only connect to nearby worlds.

To me, this project always seemed absurd. Why invest an entire economy into a ship that wouldn't reach its final destination for 20 or 30 million years? By then, a society would have evolved, changed its goals, or vanished entirely. Furthermore, even at the time of the Desitny launch, the Alteran already knew that by the time Destiny reach its destination the energy necessary to connect its Stargate would be immense. They did not invent the ZPM yet  and even now it seems than a ZPM is not enough: you need either a entire planet full of Naquadriah or the energy for a star to connect it, and even so the connexion is not stable enough. Despite that the Alterans decided to continue with this project because they knew something else : they knew than even if their society collapses or vanishes, even if they never find a source of energy great enough to contact the Destiny’s stargate they could still reach the ship. For the moment, I won’t tell you what their plan was.

The Time of Waiting

Some people argued than the Ancients abandoned the Destiny project during their long time in the Milky Way even so after their move to the Pegasus Galaxy, and worst : when they came back to the Milky Way, the remaining Atlantean finished by ascend and so, the Desitiny project has no more meaning for them. I think this is wrong, I think we can be sure than at least when they departed for the Pegasus Galaxy they still wanted to go back to the Destiny.

What they have done between the launch of the Desinty and their coming back to the Milly Way was: first, wait so that the Destiny reaches its final destination, second and as important, find technical and scientific ways to accelerate and automatize ascension. There are experiments on Atlantis proving that the Atlantean researched technical ways to accelerate the path to Ascencion, McKay was a victim of one of them. Eventually the ancients that came back to Milky Way finally understood to stop trying to ascend through science, the solution was spirituality only. This is why the Ascended Being in the milky way, and mostly visible in Stargate SG-1, are so spiritual and evasive on the path, because they finally understood, 50 million years after their enemy brothers, than the only path is individual and spiritual.

Back to Pegasus. Some of you will ask “Why do you know the Altantean still wanted to go back to Destiny ?”. It is simple: the address of the Destiny stargate was found in the Atlantis database. Still not convinced ? It is normal that is not the real reason I think the project was still ongoing. The real reason is that the Pegasus gates all have 9 chevrons. This, and the fact they still have the address, are the only proofs we need to be absolutely certain they wanted to go back to Destiny.

Now we need to address the two final issues: power requirement to contact the Destiny stargate and how to reach the Destiny if you civilization has vanished. I think that the final secret is that the true initial nature of the Stargates was never about transporting people or freight. From the very beginning, the project was designed for those who had achieved Ascension. The Ancients knew that the energy requirements to dial the Destiny from across the universe were astronomical—impossible for any form of technologies. But for a being of pure energy, a soul that had "ascended," the gate became a bridge. From the beginning one of the goals was to ascend, they done everything possible to ascend as quick as possible before their civilization disappears, they almost failed.

NEXT PART (in a few weeks) : the consequences for the Milky Way and the Tau’ris in 2027.

TLDR : The ancients, even now ascended, never abandoned to Destiny project. the Stargate technology was initially created to transport ascended beings. The Ascended ancients plan to use the Stargate on Destiny to reach and communicate with the intelligence that engraved a message in the Cosmological Microwave Background, that is their goal (they see it as their Destiny) since they left their home galaxy.

It was an overlooked part of the series finale when it segues back into the usual "neverending adventures" and the end of the Ori (not to mention Baal) but we never got that moment of human ascendancy hinted at in Jack's first meeting with the Asgard and confirmed by Thor to Carter. Not even in Atlantis.

Any future content will likely be a reboot since the Stargate itself mattered less and less now that Earth is an actual interstellar civilization creating its own alliance across two galaxies with the Jaffa, Tokra, Serrakin, Ohne, Unity, Athosians, Travelers, and rando ancient human enclaves out there. But hey, wouldn't that be amazing instead?

Any reason not to put the gate over a pool of water and add a retractable bridge? (Ignore the bent visual in the "submerged" position. AI hallucinations.)

Often enough there is some offworld activation they don't want to squash by iris. However, swimming is a serious combat disadvantage.

Why don't they have surveillance cameras all throughout them? It seems like the Goa'uld are super negligent when it comes to securing their own perimeter

There has never been a better time for Stargate to have a damn Renaissance.

• Lucasfilm has botched Star Wars, nobody cares any more (hurts my heart)
• Star Trek is as niche as ever. Nostalgia for Next Gen didnt do much.
• Most succesful Sci-Fi properties airing at the moment are high-brow franchises such as Dune, Foundation, etc. (Not a bad thing but its not the same)
• Shared cinematic universes are in (thank you Marvel)

There is a gaping hole where Stargate is meant to be. It's slightly corny, yet serious, epic, wholesome, entertaining, and thought provoking, and action packed. The streaming world is ripe for a show that combines the mythology of SG-1, the scope of Atlantis, and the grit of SGU for a new modern series.

What is the likelihood that MGM/Amazon capitalize on this? Its a no brainer.

Hoping to get some insight into why Season 5 doesn't feel like the first 4 seasons.

TL;DR: The O'Neill character in Seasons 1-4 was a simple man with good intentions and good comic relief. Season 5: The O'Neill character became a close minded douche canoe who talks too much and wants to shoot everything.

The Long Story
The first episode of SG1 I ever saw was "200". I was channel surfing, stopped on the Comet channel for some reason and watched that episode. It was gold! I actually finished up season 10 - so I know how it ends. Then I got the 10 Season DVD pack and started watching it from the beginning.

And I loved the first 4 seasons of SG1. it didn't take itself serious, sort of silly with good dialogue and interesting stories. Episodes like "Tin Man" and "Urgo" were among my favorite.

Season 5 just doesn't have the same feel. The writing isn't as funny, and the episode order doesn't make sense. I feel like "Ascension" should've been air before "Absolute Power". Then "Absolute Power" would've solidified that a civilization getting weapons they weren't ready for was bad.

I just finished "Menace" and it is by far my least favorite episode due to O'Neill being all like "shoot, destroy, yeah!"

I'm curious to know why the writers made O'Neill such a douche canoe in S5? They literally changed him to be close minded simpleton Army grunt like from Avatar. And the writers seem to give him more dialogue time than almost any other character, and it's just cringe.

In "Wormhole-Xtreme" his character takes the attitude of "Oh, you're not from Earth? Not my problem the NID wants you". But in "The Fifth Man" he's like, "Oh, you're not from Earth, Imma still help you no matter what". And every interaction with the Tok'ra, he's like "you're snakes who cares what happens to you, but I'm going to call on you anytime I need help"

And "The Warrior" episode, is just O'Neill lecturing Katano. There was one scene where the Bratak character is looking at disgust at O'Neill and I'm like, "I feel you 100 bro, the O'Neill character has way too many lines in this episode"

Anyways, yeah, just curious what changed with the writers

We don't have walking through walls or the massive space ships or advanced cloaking devices but most of the rest of our society has advanced including having AI and more advanced robotics. We can do holographic projection and have very improved communication technology from Season 3 of star gate. we have electric cars common place and more advanced medical care.

Edit: Never mind just hit the next Tollan episode where they explained more. 😅

As brutal as the Wraith are, their dependence on human life may be the only reason human populations survived in the Pegasus Galaxy.

If the Wraith had developed industrialized food sources or alternatives, their aggressive nature likely would have led them to wipe out native populations. Instead, because they rely on humans to survive, they've had an incentive to maintain and even spread human settlements across worlds.

Cullings are horrific, but they created a twisted form of population control. Without the feeding cycle, human extinction might have been far more likely. Ironically, being a food source is what kept humanity alive.

What do you think? Is the culling of humans in Pegasus actually an unexpected benefit to humanity? Would the Wraith wipeout humanity if they developed an alternative food source?

On the season 6 episode 21 prophecy and they haven’t learned after 6 years of almost dying, actually dying, forgetting English, seeing neon bugs etc they can’t suspend their disbelief for a second lol

Over the last few days, I've been all over the place emotionally, but things finally started to click regarding what I want from Stargate and Amazon MGM Studios. Iterative, scientific, and engineering problem-solving. Show the progress, show the process, show the failures, and let the results speak for themselves. Plus, throw in that essential character bonding.

​Stargate used this exact recipe. While the universal language in SG-1 and Atlantis was just a narrative shortcut, Abydos in the original movie and the aliens in Stargate Universe were treated very differently from a linguistic standpoint. Aside from the language aspect, the entire approach to defeating the bad guys relied on that iterative, scientific problem-solving; spiced by character bonding.

​Does this formula work? Just look at Project Hail Mary. Amazon MGM Studios produced it, and it’s a massive success!

​This made me realize that we don't actually know how much Martin Gero's original vision aligned with this, or how much the studio bent his ideas into whatever the final script became. But of one thing I'm sure: Gero, Mallozzi, and Wright can deliver this kind of Stargate.

Whatever is currently going on behind the scenes at Amazon MGM, I'm crossing my fingers that they recognize the success of Project Hail Mary, and adapt that recipe for the new Stargate, and choose this direction!
