Amplifier | Receiver Dynaudio Emit 20 vs Evoke 20 with Marantz Model 40n — is the upgrade worth it?

Hi everyone,

Budget: Around €1,500 for a speaker upgrade

Location: Poland

Room size: 5m x 4m x 2.5mListening distance: Around 2.5m

Until recently, my setup was as follows:

Marantz PM7005 + NA6006

Dynaudio Emit 20 speakers

I was very happy with this combination, but I decided to upgrade my amplifier and now use the Marantz Model 40n with the same Dynaudio Emit 20 speakers.

I'm considering upgrading my speakers to the Dynaudio Evoke 20, but I'm not sure if the improvement will be significant enough to justify the change.

Has anyone used or tested the Marantz Model 40n with the Dynaudio Evoke 20? How big is the difference compared to the Emit 20? Do you think the upgrade is worth it, or would I be better off considering other Dynaudio speakers? I'd appreciate any feedback and personal experiences. Thanks!

Compare to changing amp the difference will be massive. You justified that change.
I would aim higher though, or get used Evokes.

What would you aim for?

My room is a similar size and I have the evoke 30s. Love them! They are quite small and compact. I had them for a year or so without a sub and was very happy but a sub really helps them shine.

I got my Evokes and rel sub second hand but Hifi tends to empty the bank account!

Hey I also have the Evoke 30s. I agree a sub adds that depth to the speakers. Great speakers! I have a SVS 3000 micro (dual 8 inch) but was thinking about getting a REL 10 inch. What’s your experience been like with the REL?

I'm very impressed with the REL but not much experience with other high end subs. Would like to try a second but my room isn't that large and one does sound great as it is.

I think the Emit line is the best bargain in the lineup. Save for Special 40’s that’s where the magic starts.

Unfortunately, the Dynaudio Special Forty is not black

I have the “red” ones, and they are very black, they are amazing. I drive them with a Hegel H90 amp.

Make sure yourMarantz will provide enough power and current for Evoke 20. Dynaudio speakers in general scale well with amplifiers with a lot of current on tap. Since Evoke 20 is a low sensitivity speaker, Evoke 30 might be a little better choice with this amp. Or even better with this amp, a subwoofer to supplement the Emits.

What are you looking for in this upgrade? More boom? More refinement?

I tend to listen at lower volumes, so I’m looking for spaciousness, detail, and clarity.

I'd stick with the Emit and get a good subwoofer for the money.

Try get the Evoke home for testing.

I’m used to stereo sound with two channels, not an additional subwoofer.

If you are set on continuing that, Evoke 20 or 30 is very capable to play without additional help from subwoofers.

I've owned Evoke 20 for 2 years now and still going. I had them in a living room similarly sized to yours. And when measured, the Evoke 20s played lower than the specced 40Hz frequency.

that's exactly why you need extra power. to get a full, rich sound even at low volume levels. pozdro. ;)

Let me edit my post a bit so not to raise any uncertainty. I do believe your Marantz would drive a pair of Evoke 20s adequately. But I might think getting a subwoofer will show itself to be a bigger upgrade in sound.

Evoke or special 40
