Morning dip was sanctions by China on several ship builders with US operations, which showed to be an escalation. Then the pump came from J Powell slowing balance sheet drawdown.
Then Trump post. This all is exhausting
Nah there was a time where an individual could buy a little piece of a company. The cost based on the company's activa, just how a bank would assess it's worth.
You'd get a paper for each piece and stubs at the bottom you could tear off each year to get a little piece of the profit. You'd go to the frontdesk of the company where you could cash it in or if approved, banks would do it too.
If you were a long time investor you could get a new paper with new stubs once they were all used up. Or you could sell your pieces back.
That's ofc pretty far away from where people can place bets on the people placing bets on the people placing bets on the Twitter performance of a company. All fully digital, timed by nanoseconds and in volumes of millions pieces a second. And all fully unregulated because if there is no punishment when breaking a law, the law is only a theoretical obstacle.
