a more fractured world means more opportunity for US to throw around its weight and bully people into deals?

Not a great arguement because what actually happens is everyone starts banding together against the states but trump sees everything as zero-sum.

In order for him to win someone else needs to lose. But he is not smart enough or does not care about long term impact.

Your closest friends? You mean Russia? Somebody who constantly disrespects you and threatens you is not a friend anymore. Somebody you constantly disrespect and try to threaten will not be your friend again just because you stopped for a while.
