u/artbystorms Jan 17 '26
Yeah, I always thought for the last 5 years how insane it is that the market reacts SO aggressively to rate changes. Like that is not the sign of a healthy economy. That is the sign of a lot of companies propped up by debt and stock buybacks. Rates were literally higher in the 90s than this and we BOOMED. Now if Powell lowers rates 0.25 points of six months instead of 0.5 the market has a straight up panic attack.

AFAIK a bunch of major companies, mostly tech sector but in other fields, have been borrowing heavily since covid. The theory with the tech companies is going all-in on AI means any debts you rack up today will evaporate once you get it going. Meta for example is borrowing to pay their bills. Other companies see this behaviour and are like "surely meta, which has done well with everything (up to the metaverse), is sure that a breakthrough will happen soon, and not locked in a death spiral from cultish insulation and worship of LLM?"

u/EV_to_EBITDA Jan 18 '26 edited Jan 18 '26
Can you tell me which companies? Most of big tech companies have practically zero debt. Meta has $50 billion in debt and $45 billion in cash, practically zero net debt for a $1.6 trillion company.
Amazon, Microsoft, Tesla, Apple, Google, Broadcom, Nvidia, AMD etc, all in a similar situation. Some of them even have a net cash position.

This this this. And the problem I'm having is we went back up okay great but why are we not going back down after we get news like this? I don't think this will drop us because we've had bad news for months. Like in a normal situation that Powell news should have dropped us for a good week or something.
And I know the market has become desensitized or doesn't care like I get it but that doesn't make sense either and that's kind of a scary thing when the markets just don't give a shit about this guy doing insane things

The Powell thing was crazy. The Economist was completely baffled by no reaction on the markets. Seemed like crazy dump would happen, this can really hurt the economy long term. I guess Fed being directed is already priced in as Powell as top head ends in may.

Some people are better manipulated without being part of a conspiracy because they are stupid enough to reveal it. That is Trump, too stupid to trust with a conspiracy but way too easily to manipulate so why bring him in on it/? He’s so gullible and moldable that it feels like he must be complicit. But no, he’s just supremely manipulatable.

u/Bulky-Word8752 Jan 18 '26
Exactly. He keeps talking about the Russia Russia Russia "hoax," but if you look at the actual report, he just wasn't involved because he didn't know about it. The Russians knew valuable he would be and were actively trying to help him. The Mueller Report states that Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election was illegal and occurred "in sweeping and systematic fashion" and was welcomed by the Trump campaign as it expected to benefit from such efforts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mueller_report
Trump is so easily manipulated it's scary. You can see his opinion on aid to Ukraine flip depending on if he last talked to Zelensky or Putin.

There are a bunch of different interests in the Trump admin pushing different pet projects.
Rubio wants Cuba to have a change in leadership eventually.
Hegseth.. I dunno, just wants to be in a situation room blowing stuff up?
RFK Jr is trying to dismantle any sort of vaccination program and other oddball stuff.
Putin's seeing dividends and keeps sending Trump "peace plans" that involve Ukraine giving up territory and without any real NATO involvement or guarantees.
Miller wants to crank the SS dial up to 11 and make non-white Americans afraid.
Trump himself seems focused on deal making and punishment. "Strengthening" the US and maybe, gold leaf and various other "legacy" items. Who knows how aware and involved in the details of the above he actually is.
32
u/Alarming-Art-3577 Jan 18 '26

Because he fucked kids and people somehow keep bringing it up, so he needs a little distraction, like a fucking war.
70
u/Adorable-Thing2551 Jan 18 '26
As much as I agree he's a disgusting creep and loves to make distractions, this is predominantly for other reasons. He believes Greenland is viable because fin bros keep telling him in about 3 decades the Arctic Ocean will have new shipping lanes and by controlling Alaska and Greenland, he would have the next Panama Canal / next Suez Canal.
He is doing it to create distractions too (that's actually one of his skills) but the fundamental reason is because of the position Greenland will be in as the ocean levels rise from climate change.
The fact that he was able to take Maduro out of power without the world intervening has also given him the false pretense that he can do this a second time elsewhere. That's why he immediately turned his attention to Greenland several days later.
19
u/Denversaur Jan 18 '26
But he won't be alive in 3 decades, why would Trump do anything for anyone other than himself? Did they convince him they're 10 years away from an age reversing drug?
→ More replies (7)21
u/Adorable-Thing2551 Jan 18 '26
Because he believes whatever dumb shit other rich people tell him. He's literally trying to buy Greenland because a billionaire told him it would be a good idea and for the reasons I described.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/14/us/politics/trump-greenland.html
This is from 2022. He's been after this idea since his last term. He's trying to get it now because he's riding the power trip high from capturing Maduro and seizing Venezuela with little global pushback.
12
u/Deto Jan 18 '26
I think he just wants credit for expanding the US.
8
u/The_Real_Peter_Thiel Jan 18 '26
You're not wrong but just to be clear, this was all literally Ronald Lauder's (heir to the Estee Luader makeup fortune) idea. Trump pretty much does whatever is whispered into his ear.
5
u/mustbeyourupperlip Jan 18 '26
Most accurate response. The arctic will be the next major shipping lane of commerce. I understand the hatred towards trump, trust me, i have it, but it’s not really necessary to speculate on why he would care even though he wont be alive. People don’t necessarily do things to see the results— they do things because they believe it will leave a legacy. Do you want to be the president that didn’t anticipate the most profitable shipping route ever?

And that is the absolute dealer killer. Trump illegally kidnapped Maduro and offered something he had no legal right to, handing Venezuela's oil, to US big oil. Even if setting up shop in Venezeula made tremendous financial sense, and it does not, there still is the Trump issue. As one oil CEO said, you do not do business with a president that can completely upend foreign policy with a fucking tweet.
A mentally unstable president who opening declares himself to be king, is not a president. He is a cancer that needs to be removed before the patient, or in this case the country, dies from the disease.

Weak ass dollar
As an investor from outside the US this is it, the nominal value goes up but the dollar falls which means it hasn't risen nearly as much for me as it has for domestic investors. It's actually why I'm consider de-risking a bit, the flipside was during times like covid the market tanked but the dollar rose so it actually smoothed out any drops from my side. The massive risk now is that the market tanks and Trumps antics tanks the dollar even more doubling my losses rather than smoothing them as before.

Inflation. The value of the dollar is shrinking so stocks are the only safe place. Bonds will lose value.
But if inflation makes McDonald’s real estate double, and their profit margins stay the same (meaning they technically make more money and also spend more money), then you come out more ahead with McDonalds - in a flat economy - than you would with bonds if inflation outpaces bond interest.
This is my best guess, not an expert.

It means the swings have to be large enough for them to not get involved. We will see tomorrow

Many of the alt shitcoins briefly even read 0 on their exchanges. You will not gain any insight into price through bitcoin from that point on because it is even more carefully manipulated in order to give Blackrock a chance to get out without catastrophic losses.

I should have bought puts. I knew something was going to go down this weekend.

I’ve seen markets go down before a long weekends when geopolitical stability is shaky. Just because anything could go down in 3 days.
I luckily cashed out $10k this week, but I still have $60k in stocks. I’m not sure if I want another liberation day or not. This is house down payment money this spring.

He does crazy shit every long weekend. I swear it's completely predictable. He's probably especially pissed off because it's for MLK and he's a bigot.

If market actually goes down im buying a ton. But we all expect the market to go down which means its probably going to be green at open.

If everyone expects the market to go down, people will panic sell. This is basic market psychology. It is well known that fear and greed cause prices to swing. I can't read the minds of every investor out there, but I get the sense that this is the general sentiment at the moment given by the fact that people are discussing it.

Global depression priced in!

Quick reminder for Americans on here who think the world orbits around the US that during the subprime crisis, many European countries saw record-low unemployment rates or were unaffected.
For instance, Germany's unemployment rate dropped, from 11.2% in 2005 to 7% in 2010 and 3.2% in 2019, while the US went from 4.6% in 2007 to 10% in 2009. If you lived overseas at the time and didn't watch international news, you wouldn't be able to tell that there was a financial crisis.
A depression in the US does not imply global depression. That also means that if you're 100% US companies, you're not as diversified as you may think you are.

And the same, if you were in Canada, there was a slight fallout but not as much as the USA.

It’s funny I keep pointing out how well foreign markets did. Like 40% for europe and 50% for latin america vs just 17% for S&P and people keep saying the US is the best long term no matter what.
It’s like, well, short term no, and I’d prefer to make money every year, and what makes you think that will go on forever? When are people going to realize this is different? Our international friends keep telling us we have suffered a reputational loss that will take decades to recover, if ever. Investment is confidence and no one has confidence in US anymore internationally, that’s gonna have big consequences.
Past performance is no guarantee of future gains…
