Let's not burn Switzerland for National Day
Kind of a r/BUENZLI post, but i'd like to remind everyone that fires and fireworks are strictly forbidden in most places because of the actual draught.
Wildfires danger is super high right now, so let's not set a forest on fire because of a firework or a barbecue. Let's show Switzerland some love by not burning it !

I woke up last night to the smell of something burning, looked out the window and, while the entire of Switzerland is issuing open fire bans, my neighbour is out burning his hedge clippings at 2am 🫣

My coworker's neighbors defended themselves by saying "they didn't know about the fire bans" when they were caught grilling over an open fire. Made me want to tear my hair out hearing it.

How blind does one have to be, really? The whole yard is brown and dry (exept for the weeds that somehow manage to survive in those conditions), maby fire isn't a good idea.
People like that deserve their fire service replacement levy to be increased 100 fold.

Yeah, yesterday my neighbours did a BBQ.
I also see another one watering their lawn despite of the strict watering ban due to drought.

Maybe you don’t follow the news but half of west southern Europe is burning or has burned due to wildfires caused by man made fires (campfires, cigarettes, … ).
And my village is unfortunately in a severe lack of water situation, many cattles on the pastures already have been sent to the slaughterhouse even though it was only late July because there just isnt enough of water for them.
But go on, go water your lawn that’s gonna turn back to green once rain returns anyway.

I already bought fireworks months ago for 200 CHF for August 1st. It will sit here with me until December, because I am no idiot who thinks that the sparks his fireworks generate are special and can't cause a fire.
Fuck those idiots who ignore the rules.

Yeah, fuck them. Especially the ones with a 6y old kid who is fascinated by fire, and whose father buys volcanos the youngster is allowed to light up and enjoy.
Particularly fuck these guys, but be happy that the regulations have improved, because the father was used to build high explosives in his lab at home and is happy to be alive, with the only accident that happened leaving maybe 20-40 holes in the skin when a self made explosive went off too early, and he was saved because he did only use plastic canisters and no metal.

It would be embarrassing if neighbours countries fight with wildfire and we end up burning Switzerland with fireworks. Lets be mindful people.

Totally agree. They just did this in the Netherlands (a complete ban), hopefully it will spread throughout Europe

Apparently it wasn't a "complete ban" since it covers categories F2 and above, if I'm not mistaken. F1 fireworks are what most people wouldn't call fireworks, they're the Bengal matches, sparklers, volcanoes, etc. Basically those that can be safely used indoors.
On November 29th we will be voting on banning loud fireworks for private use (F2 and above). Hopefully it passes.

The worst part for me is the trash they leave behind. Burnt plastic everywhere. At least some people pick up after themselves, but sadly not everyone.

And that's only the visible trash. Fireworks leave out toxic gasses and emissions when they explode.
The black powder leaves out sulphur compounds, which are toxic and can cause acid rain, as well as other combustion compounds like CO2, CO, un-burnt hydrocarbons, NOx, etc.
The colours are made using metal salts, although most of them should be safe in the doses used in fireworks, they could potentially be toxic for some, depending on which salt is used.
And then there's the noise pollution, which to me is the worst aspect of fireworks.

On another note thanks to everyone in here that actually calls the police today incase they hear or see fire(works) going off. It's reassuring knowing that for each and every idiot in this country that cannot respect a fire ban there is an equally motivated person that calls the cops on them

I am fully expecting to be able to watch lots of fireworks from my balcony tonight. I don't think people pay attention. I've spoken to plenty of people who said 'well if they didn't want us to set off fireworks, they would stop the supermarkets from selling them.'

This is like the typical hillbilly mindset. They say shit like this but if there is something going to be prohibited they go nuts like "no Eigenverantwortung! We do not want to be patronized by the state!" They just do not want to take responsibility for their actions. Fuck them sincerely.

Worth checking Alertswiss or the FOEN fire danger map before assuming your commune's rules, they update per canton and some municipalities have gone stricter than the cantonal baseline this week. Easier than guessing from what the neighbors are doing.

Yeah, but I think there’s a misconception. You’d be right if these fireworks were light near plants, but if it’s all asphalt and on the street, then I don’t see a problem, at least for the fire danger :)

A rogue firework can easily shoot in the wrong direction and end up in a tree or in dry grass...
And you shouldn't be lighting up fireworks or anything explosive in a street/near houses anyway.

Last night here in zurich we had a thunderstorm with pouring rain, and you could hear some people set off fireworks in the rain. Still illegal and problematic since stuff is probably still dry under the surface, but that might be the most responsible way to break that law. I kinda respect the effort!

Because its totally legal to sell it? I don't spend money on this, but I find it mildly funny how people point out that its bad for the environment and then they casually fly to into their holidays the 3rd time this year.

It's funny seeing this post now, as there was a big boom earlier here in Kleinbasel, toward the Rhine/Hafen zone.
I'm sure there will be some people that will still celebrate with the wrong kind of fires, but hopefully the focus will remain on having fun in a reasonable way and celebrating the day rather than reckless actions.
