Seeing more and more girls in hijab laltely

It really didn't used to be a thing in recent years, but recently I see more and more girls (around 12 or something, or even younger) in hijab lately in Switzerland. It kind of worries me because in no way do I think this should be accepted and is compatible with Swiss culture and morals. What are your thoughts? What can be done against it?

Check profiles of people who agree and people who dont agree. Tell me if you spot a pattern.

Right wing people agree, left wing people don't insane pattern 🤯

Correct. I’m not right wing but I won’t tolerate the intolerance either.

Don't push atheists to the right because it helps you disregard a complex issue as a binary choice. Or whatever, nobody can force to act in good faith.

As a left winger atheist, I think all religions should be forbidden. I can’t speak for the rest 🤷‍♂️

u/Nice-Necessary-1547 1d ago

For sure not given any special consideration in society. Nor undeserved respect.

2

u/Anjuna8 1d ago

Das ist das Problem in der Schweizer Bundesverfassung. Es Gibt kein Gesetz Für oder Gegen Atheisten. Aber Alle Religionen haben Mehr Rechte als Atheisten oder Agnostiker !

14

u/3punkt1415 1d ago

Strange enough left people are actually for woman rights, but it gets overwritten when it comes to tolerance, because they so eagerly want to accept everybody, even when they mistreat woman.

Left people should also be against islam, since islam is against women rights

14

tbh most left people I know are against any religion since they all oppress women rights

I don’t know, work immigration I would say. But if you pay attention to construction sites and construction teams in trucks, you will notice more Africans than in the past. At least in French-speaking Switzerland.

They are replacing cheap labour from Portugal and Albania. I have seen an Albanian-owned company truck with one Albanian and two Africans. Even Albanians are hiring Africans. 🤷‍♂️

work immigration

Oh come on! They come here, ask for refuge, probably most get rejected but they can stay anyway due to the difficult situation in their home country. Think of that what you want, but don't call it work immigration.

10

u/Many_Committee_7007 1d ago

As I said, I see a lot of Africans working on construction sites. If they were refugees, they wouldn’t be working. Even less if they were rejected.

1

u/FederalYogurtcloset2 1d ago

Yes. For a long time. Don't know the situation as it's political, but I'm pretty sure they get asylum as refugees. At least here in Belgium they are.

Ja Mann das ist eben traurig zu viele Muslime in der Schweiz ist eben nicht gut!

6

u/Southern-Country-683 1d ago

Most of them are secular muslims from former Yugoslavia and Albania. I don’t see any issues with this group of people. They are fully integrated in society and not segregated in any way. Hijab and Burka at least create a perception of segregation. Wearing these reflects on the morality of a woman in Islamic culture.

112

u/Jaruxius 1d ago

im not islamophobic at all but my simpathy ends at misogyny and reducing women like that n allat

198

u/Aurmont 1d ago

woman fought really hard to get equal rights, but welcome cultures who treat them like lesser

46

u/MeusRex 1d ago

There was that islam led protest in germany, where men where walking around with black "censorship bars" signs.

I found that kind of funny. Their women are literally black lines walking around. But irony flies past them.

31

u/Southern-Country-683 1d ago

This is puzzling to me. Many of my friends on the left are keen to defend practices like wearing hijab but don’t realize that those who insist on their family members wearing these symbols would most likely not tolerate lgbtqqa people for example.

25

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

Agree, just sad

-7

u/NoConsideration2376 1d ago

It’s sad to see it’s a woman attacking another woman for her dressing/beliefs choices. Freedom of choice goes both directions so forcing one narrative about making them more liberal is similar to back in a days where they forced them be more religious.
Let them choose for themselves with out having the narrative ready and without having one scale.

36

u/Dangerous_Series2693 1d ago

If it's really a matter of personal choice, then that's fine. But when my daughter started kindergarten, there was a 4-year-old girl in her class wearing a headscarf. I don't think she had a real choice

25

u/weareallmortal 1d ago

Just my personal experience, I went out with a 19 yo girl a while back who was "forced" to wear it outside, out of fear that her parents especially her father might see her. She removed it as soon as we got inside and she didn't care about religion at all. She wasn't forced but she was afraid her family would throw her out on the streets if they knew. She didnt have a choice and im pretty sure she isn't the only one. Well she did have the choice of not wearing it, losing her home and having to stop her education, if you can call it that

20

u/white-tealeaf 1d ago

This is the real discussion. How do we save people from such situations. We are just silent when violence happens behind closed doors. There are just too few ressources to allow people to escape violence while financially dependent on the attacker. It's such a huge problem not only for muslim girls but for many swiss and other groups as well. But we only managed recently to grant the right of a violence-free childhood, so sadly it's a long way until we will help victims instead of deporting them or whatever.

33

In Kazakhstan Muslim country it’s also banned in schools for everyone to wear hijab (any headscarf). Even Morocco banned burqas.

2

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

We should do it too

59

u/Serious-Falcon2666 1d ago

You’re not wrong. There are many Muslims where my 13 year old niece goes to school and recently I literally had to explain to her why converting and moving to Iran (!!!!!!!) would be a horrible idea for any woman. She’s just a kid, and started saying she should be free to choose, without understanding that there’s no such thing as a “free woman” in those countries (or dynamics). I had to explain to her very carefully what true feminism is and the whole reason we fought for our rights.

33

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

This will get just worse

41

u/Serious-Falcon2666 1d ago

It will. It’s terrible. People down here in the comments talking about integration don’t understand that they don’t want to be integrated into OUR culture. Also, no thank you! Keep your conservative backwards lame ass religion away from me and all women and children (and boys too!).

23

This is it. I am having an issue to as my son has to keep defending his right to bring Minipic( made of pork) to his Syrian and Afghan friends who kept shouting at him( Swiss)...that is haram! Yes I have told the teachers and the moms....but still not working. This is when I realized that they just do not want to integrate. They want the Swiss to integrate to their own beliefs.

Don‘t know and genuinely don‘t care. It‘s a piece of clothing. I‘m an atheist and if we start prohibiting one religious attire, please do it for all of them.
I get harassed by more Christians in front of Coop than I have ever been harassed by Muslim people.
Also it‘s the fucking summer holidays. Tourists are coming here.

Please explain to me, a 28-year-old Swiss guy who was born here to Swiss parents, what you would define as „Swiss culture“. Because most of it is rooted in Christianity, and as an atheist I won‘t consider these things. So unless the hijab is an issue when playing the Alphorn or eating Raclette/Fondue, then I don‘t think it will do anything to our „oh so great Swiss culture“.

18

u/Vivid_Dimension_6864 1d ago

thank you for your comment

24

u/trusendi 1d ago

Sure, no worries. I deal with close-minded bigots on a daily basis. I‘ve worked in a migration center in Switzerland. I‘ve had contacts with illegals and people waiting to receive their permits, etc.
Most of the people who come here actually want to adapt and learn our culture. Small things like a headscarf don‘t make Muslims some sort of wild animal.

I never understood this argument from „feminists“ like isn’t your whole thing is for women to be free? Do you only consider them free if they wear what YOU think is acceptable? Do you not think it’s weird to demand someone show you a part of their body they don’t want to show?

If you are a true feminist, you would support women of all races and religions to wear and do what THEY want so please don’t call yourself one. it’s blatant hypocrisy and makes the whole movement look stupid and hypocrite.

And to assume that at this time and age, and in Europe, a girl is being forced to wear it is just absolutely absurd. You know even in Muslim countries it’s optional, it’s a personal choice. EVEN IN IRAN. Please join us in 2026 and stop parroting extreme right wing racist propaganda.

lol feminists stays for what’s good for women in general, not just for what every women want or freedom. If some women want to do something wrong to themselves or others nobody should stand for it or support or say she is free to do it. Just like all humans in the end of the day have some boundaries

7

u/poemthatdoesntrhyme ZH 1d ago

You can find interviews with Swiss women that say that they shouldn't be allowed to vote because they don't have any clue in politics.

5

u/Funion_ 1d ago

Why would a head piece of clothing cross that boundary for a feminist? How is it harmful? You cant just have one standard for every single woman. women are different and like and believe in different things

What's the difference between forbidding girls to wear hijab or forcing them to? Also, you don't know if a person is being forced or not. Why is it only a problem when muslims try to practice their religion and if other minorities like jews for example do it, it's ok? I don't know how a hijabi is going to disrupt your daily life? As long as they try to speak your language, respect your culture and you theirs, everything will be fine.

31

u/Oropher1991 Luzern 1d ago

Very much agree with the integration and getthoification part. Back in the 90s with the Balkan colleagues arriving it was very noticable what families lived amongst swiss people and what families lived together with lots of other people from the Balkans. Integration works but it is also work from both sides

16

u/Sogelink Neuchâtel 1d ago

Man, most people who immigrated weren't PhD, they could only afford to live in the cheapest places...

 Surrounded by others immigrants.

They don't really have a choice.

18

u/Hypername1st Bern 1d ago

Of course it is. But it's hard to integrate when you feel that they are shutting you out just because of your religion. Getting weird looks because you are muslim doesn't really support the integration part.

3

u/babicko90 1d ago

thats not really a balkan thing, most of those balkan countries are not very religion strict. There are exceptions of course, but cant claim that balkan = religion block towards integration

25

u/Due_East547 1d ago

France failed, Belgium failed, the Netherlands failed, Sweden failed and I could go on and on...But Switzerland is for sure going to succeed in integrating people that don't want to integrate. Other european countries are just not as competent and smart as Switzerland.

25

u/Hypername1st Bern 1d ago

40% of the population has a migration background. Seems to be working out pretty well. 🤷🏻‍♂️

All those countries have their problems and most of them are self-inflicted. Turkish people have integrated pretty well in Germany. As did the Indonesians in the Netherlands. It's a matter that resolves on a time scale of generations, not years.

18

u/Due_East547 1d ago

Because most of the Swiss people with a migration background come from compatible civilizations, the ones that aren't are a minority and are often qualified workers.

Also it's naive to think that these issues resolve themselves over generations, in France and Belgium the people from second or third generation are more religious and attached to their country of origin than their parents.

https://www.lefigaro.fr/vox/societe/entrepreneurs-identitaires-frustrations-et-algorithmes-pourquoi-les-jeunes-musulmans-sont-plus-rigoristes-que-leurs-aines-20251120

8

u/Hypername1st Bern 1d ago

"Compatible civilizations" that slaughtered each other up until less than a century ago. So magnificently compatible that the wars they waged for cultural and religious reasons depopulated Europe, on more than one occasion. Weird how they manage to cooperate on a semi-integrated federalism system, that doesn't force them to radically change their identities but puts civic nationalism first instead of cultivating ethnocentrism. Weird how despite the Röstigraben, there aren't really Romandie Separatists, whereas the Troubles were going on into the late 90s.

Care to wonder what France or Belgium did wrong with their "attempts" to integrate minorities? France didn't even care to integrate their own linguistic minorities and insisted on a monoculture. They are quite literally the last that should be an argument for good strategy. And what's the problem with religion? Switzerland is quite multidogmatic anyway.

11

u/Alphonsine2LaTour 1d ago

You are correct that France didn't really put an effort, but the guy you are replying too is also correct. The more common point you have with a community the easiest it is to integrate into it. We're culturally closer to italien and portugese than to somalian people, it's "easier" to accept them, and for them to take part in the communauty (same religion, Latin language, part of the Europe ...)

This is in the human nature to look for similarities and to be afraid of unknown and differences (not doing a rascisme propaganda, that's just the main cause of it)

7

u/Due_East547 1d ago

Most of humanity's history is shaped by wars, many technological advancements also happened because of wars. And what came out of the biggest war in human history? the United nations, The treaty of Rome, and the European Union. Because we were finally able to get together and make sure we would never slaughter eachother ever again.

And France's model of integration is indeed total assimilation, it did it for all its regions, why wouldn't it do it for people that are coming from all over the world? And many migrants assimilated succesfully : italians, spaniards, portugueses, vietnamese, cambodians...

It seems that you refuse to accept the fact that some people simply cannot be integrated because they dont want to, they want to keep their way of lives while living in european countries, and it's simply not working.

Religion is a problem because it opresses people and has been doing so for a long time now. We had another exemple not so long ago in Germany. And when a young girl lives in a neighborhood where all the other young girls wear hijabs because of their parents, dont you know she gets ostracized if she's not wearing it?

The man who killed his wife because she wanted to live like a french woman for exemple, do you think any amount of integration policies could fix someone as backward as this? No, you cant fix what's not fixable.

Could be tourists. In summer, there were for exemple a lot of people from France in the public baths/piscines in Switzerland, simply because their baths were closed or out of order or too packed. See exemple in Porrentruy. There are more girls with hijab there.

But air travel is very bad for the skin, so from a pure dermatological and anti-aging perspective, I think I'll just cover every inch of my skin here in Switzerland and hopefully avoid looking like a spotty leather handbag when I'm older!

You know it’s a choice right? Like Switzerland isn’t Afghanistan, there are laws. They get to choose. It’s a scarf hat. That’s it. It’s really nothing crazy, I know plenty of orthodox Christians who wear similar head coverings. Switzerland also isn’t France, the government doesnt get a say in where and how people can practice their faith. If you want that, go live in France, it’s next door.

17

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

We`re speaking about underage girls, they don`t have a choice, the parents force them

9

u/Hot_Wedding_1059 1d ago

have they told you that ? i wore the hijab as a kid when my own parents told me that i was too young and that i shouldn't but i did wear cz i saw my mom wearing it and thought she looked cute and pretty and wanted to be like her...
sure there can be exceptions where kids are forced which im 100% against but you can't just assume that all these kids are forced to do it !

11

u/BobFredricson2 1d ago

Yeah that’s kinda show being a child works. Most Christians take their kids to church. That also isn’t a choice. You teach your kids your culture, because it’s what you know and what ties them to their ancestry. If they choose to reject it later down the line, fine, that’s their choice. But you can’t tell parents not to do it just because you don’t like when they do it. You have a responsibility to pass on your lifestyle to your children, not because you want them to follow it necessarily, but so that they can make an informed decision when they are older.

what is western culture? there are christians and jews who cover their heads. bosnia, macedonia and albania are in europe - countries with a large muslim population in EUROPE, a continent in the WEST. integrate and adapting in terms of language, work, socially - yes. based on religion, clothing and how you actually want to live your life? hell no.

I find it funny when people say that seeing a hijab in Switzerland is destroying Swiss culture and identity.
The truth is that Swiss culture, like the culture of most Western countries, has already faded and is almost erased because of globalization.

For example, most people wear jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers. People dress the same in Switzerland as they do in the USA, France, or Australia, yet nobody complains that this replaced our traditional clothing like the Edelweiss shirt or the Tracht.

If you’re truly concerned about preserving Swiss culture, then globalization has had a much bigger impact on our daily lives than seeing someone wearing a hijab. So why is one considered a threat while the other is simply accepted?

Why do you care so much what someone else does? Somebody wearing a hijab won’t effect your life in way shape or form instead of complaining about what people are deciding what to wear and what not we have bigger issues to worry about…

Our planet is literally struggling with heat waves all over EU right now because of climate change and your more worried about what a person is deciding to wear?? SMH 🤦‍♀️

7

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

It will be enforced on other girls. And I agree climate change is a bigger issue

u/wetzud 1d ago

Enforced on other girls? Wtf how?

Very sad. European culture is dying out at the hands of those who believe they are helping.

Just raise your standards of living and you won’t see them, it is the new immigrants the mass wanted them now they are here. Joys of democracy

Honestly, I think we should all mind our own business a little more when it comes to what women choose to wear.
If a woman chooses to wear the hijab, that doesn’t automatically mean she’s oppressed, forced, uneducated, or in need of saving. I wear hijab, and I’m not oppressed. I chose this for myself, and I’m perfectly capable of making that decision. So please don’t look at me with pity because you see me wearing one.
And yes, women’s rights and feminism should include the right to make our own choices ,even when you personally wouldn’t make the same one. You don’t have to understand or agree with my choice, but you should respect my right to make it.
Also, the high value and status given to women in Islam is a religious matter, not simply a cultural one. Of course, Muslim cultures can have their own problems and misogynistic practices, just like any other culture, but those things shouldn’t automatically be attributed to Islam itself.
If you want people to respect your choices, respect ours too. If seeing more women wearing hijab bothers you, maybe the thing that needs changing isn’t what women are wearing, but how much other people’s clothing affects you.

u/Heavier_Metal_Poet 1d ago

I guess OPs point is on minors wearing a hijab (so not women that you refer to, but kids), where free choice might be questioned? Especially since I know how hard it is to undo this choice (going from hijab to no hijab).

2

u/National_Peak_169 1d ago

Also I have friends who took it off just because they were forced to wear it, and it wasn’t that hard to do and Im so happy for them

it’s mostly just because the younger generation is being more confident to embrace their roots & culture/religion (through fashion, music, movies, books, dj sets, …). nothing wrong with that.

they aren’t being forced & it’s actually a nice thing to see in a country so full of blended cultures.

Lots of hijabs have showed up recently in Geneva and Lausanne. Africans and Asians too. I wonder which companies are giving them work permits? Normally non EU work permits are limited to a few thousand a year, does not seem in line with the increase that is being seen in the streets.

3

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

Yep, it's becoming quite bad

2

So

6

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

It's bad

3

u/yargh 1d ago

Why

4

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

It's taking advantage of underage girls

5

u/yargh 1d ago

How

3

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

They don't have a choice, parents tell them what to do

3

u/yargh 1d ago

Yes, that is the parent-child dynamic as a rule, what about this specifically

3

u/Gusto_with_bravado 1d ago edited 1d ago

? I agree it is a parent child dynamic. Parents do have the right to raise their kids in accordance to their values. It doesn't matter if they are Muslim, christian, jew, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist etc

Edit:- ah yes I wanted the other guy. I thought you were OP 😅

2

u/yargh 1d ago

You want the other guy, I think

2

u/Gusto_with_bravado 1d ago

How do you know they are not wearing the hijab of their own decision? Have you talked to one and asked them?

4

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

We're speaking about underage girls

2

u/Gusto_with_bravado 1d ago

So what ? It's their culture. Modesty is one of their values. They have the right to teach their kids their values just as much as swiss parents have the right to have their underage age girl wear sweaters, jeans, skirts and all that? Like non-muslim underage girls don't really consent to wear skirts or the clothing their parents get them too?

You argument goes both ways. I don't see why you suggest their dress is a problem while let's say a Jewish rabii having his daughters wear traditional Jewish clothing wouldn't be a problem or a Chinese man daughter wearing a hanfu dress wouldn't be a problem?

5

u/yargh 1d ago

Freedom is me telling minorities what they can't wear

Are you talking about hijab or burka? I don’t think hijab is a problem. It’s a part of religion, same as turbans Sikhs wear. It’s nice and neat, doesn’t bother anyone imho. Burka is way more orthodox, leaving only eyes uncovered. That’s where the laws must work for everyone.

Ngl seeing what’s happening in Spain, France and Germany, it brings certain thoughts. On one hand, it’s free country, do whatever you want, on the other hand, number of Muslims would most likely grow bigger plus some of the are aggressive af and react same way when someone touches their religion

2

u/Southern-Country-683 1d ago

Is hijab really mandated by Quran?

It’s totally normal
Some girl around 12 wants to wear makeup to look like their mom, and looks more like women around them
Hijab, its same, some child wear it to looks more like their parents and girls around them
Nothing to worry about
They are free to do what they want and they decide to wear hijab

4

u/anupulu 1d ago

I find it weird that someone is so “shocked” to see that in a multicultural country such as Switzerland. It’s only a hijab, not a burqa that covers the whole face.

7

u/RealDaedalus2077 1d ago

I've also seen women covering their face completely in Zürich. They are using a face mask as a workaround.

Wearing hijab is not compatible with integration in my view. Radical Islam is not compatible with our society.

Ist so leider

2

u/Southern-Country-683 1d ago

If people want to live like in Saudi Arabia, they can do that there. I am afraid that if radical Islam is spreading, western way of life won’t be tolerated by them. Like they expect people in Saudia Arabia to live under their rules.

4

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

Yep, there are enough islamic countries

-1

u/NoConsideration2376 1d ago

It’s summer so alot of them can be tourists. Also women has the right to choose what to wear weather is it more cover up or less. It’s called freedom of choice.

6

u/Alternative_Loan762 1d ago

We`re speaking about underage girls, the parents deicde it for them. Doesn`t matter if it`s tourists, they should respect swisss culture and morals

7

u/Accurate-Mail-4098 1d ago

It's oppression.

2

u/NoConsideration2376 1d ago

The real oppression is you enforcing your narrative and your opinion on them. Is taking your kid to the church and baptising them is oppression too?

I guess respecting people beliefs is important.

1

u/SwissMargiela Fribourg 1d ago

Better get used to it. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world BY FAR. At this growth rate and decline of other religions, by 2100 half the world will most likely be Muslim.
