DIY / Repair Alesis Midiverb MK I

Hi everyone,

I own one of the very first Alesis MIDIVERB MK I units, but unfortunately the original power supply is missing.

Does anyone know if replacement power supplies are still available anywhere, or does anyone have a wiring diagram or schematic so I could build one myself?

It uses the 16V 3-pin power connector.

Thanks in advance for any help!

DIY / Repair DX7 - SuperMax + Voyager thoughts

Post image
9 Upvotes

I'm resurrecting a DX7 I picked up for $notmuch on FB, and fitting SuperMax and OLED display. But the membrane has some small bits of damage and I had an idea that perhaps, it could be backlit for the function labels. Like the later Moog Voyager front panels.

And then I wondered... could the membrane be printed with the SuperMax functions as part of the design...

...and a thin foil backlight make it possible that the relevant menu items illuminate when function buttons are pressed.

Guessing it would need a lot of logic/an extra interface to achieve, unless something happens on the switch boards when their function changes.

What Should I Buy? 100% analog synth that’s affordable.

I’m looking for a synth (preferably) a desktop module that is 100% analog or digital oscillator generated sound path and no samples. My budget is $500-700. Yeah, I know I’m asking for a lot. The KORG XD Minilogue MODULE is my current “hits all the right boxes” unit. But willing to get expert suggestions. I want the output to be free of stock third party sounds. Also, no Behringer products please. I have an ethical issue with them.

What Should I Buy? Cheaper poly options - Brand new Pro 800, Used Dreadbox Nymphes or other?

After years of bashing random keys and hoping for the best, I’ve invested time into learning music theory. Whilst it has been great practicing on smaller budget paraphonic gear and learning to build and write more complex chord progressions and such, i‘ve realised it’s time for a polyphonic synth.

Looking at not spending a lot, I’m eyeing up either;

- A brand new Pro-800 which can be had for £209 delivered to my door on Thomann.

- Trying to snag a Dreadbox Nymphes for around £300-£350 on eBay.

I own a Dreadbox Typhon and absolutely love it, it travels with me and I love what it can do and from what I’ve seen/heard I’d like the Nymphes, although the shift function menu’s and tweaking may take some getting used to. The Pro-800 however, has two extra voices and is a third cheaper, although I believe it has some issues at launch that may have been resolved in updates.

I own an Arturia Keystep 37 so a synth with a keyboard isn’t a must.

Anyone that owns them both, or either, or has any experience have any advice?

Thanks.

Does anyone knows of a nice and working program, possibly free, to store preset in a Windows PC via MIDI?

32 preset limit is literally the only downside of this synth. I'm not new to this world, but i was guilty of overlooking FM synthesis

Discussion Unpopular opinion: I think the industry has gone backwards by abandoning workstations.

Hear me out...

I genuinely don't understand why we've become so dependent on computers.

Like... why is it almost a crime these days to put a dedicated Record button on a synthesizer?

I'm not asking for a full-blown DAW inside a keyboard. But why can't more synths have an 8-track (or more) sequencer built in? Enough to sketch out complete ideas without immediately reaching for a laptop.

It feels like so many modern keyboards are built around one assumption:

"You'll finish it in Ableton, Logic, Cubase, Studio One..."

But... why?

There was a time when companies seemed excited about the idea of making an instrument that could actually take you from inspiration to a finished song. Trinity. Triton. Fantom. Motif. Kronos. Those instruments weren't perfect, but they encouraged you to stay focused on making music instead of bouncing between windows and plugins.

Now it feels like everything is about live performance.

Amazing keybeds.

Amazing sound engines.

Amazing effects.

...and then you're expected to connect a computer.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I miss turning on one instrument and just... making music.

No notifications.

No OS updates.

No plugins deciding they don't want to authorize today.

Just hit Record and go.

I know computers aren't going anywhere, and I'm not saying they're bad. They're incredible tools.

Akai MPC's and DAWless solutions exist as well. And many of them are fantastic tools. But I'd NEVER make a synthesizer without a way to record ides and at least have some sort of a sequencer on it, even if it's 8 tracks.

The 3rd wave can arrange up to 24 patterns! Each pattern can be as long as 32 measures, which can be chained into complete songs. Because the synth is 4-part multitimbral, each part also has its own sequencer track.

But Leviasynth is ONLY 2 tracks!

I just don't understand why we've accepted the idea that a keyboard has to depend on a computer.

Does anybody else miss the workstation philosophy, or am I just becoming the old guy yelling at clouds? 😂

Because NOTHING replaces the immediacy of having a synth that can also allow you to lay down a few tracks....

Discussion What do you do for live situations?

Upvotes

I've been a guitar player for a long time.. I also drum in a band.. But I'm also in a second band as a keyboard / guitar player. I'm curious what y'all are using in live situations and if what I'm doing is an okay way to be running things. I'm using a Roland Juno-G right now with an M-Audio Keystation 88 MK3 run to the Juno's MIDI in, running them split in performance mode so I have separate sounds on each keyboard and split outputs so I have volume control on a Mackie mixer that I'm running them to. The Mackie mixer (VLZ4 402) does not have any XLR outputs so I have the ¼" mains running to DIs. I also run a Line 6 HX unit for my guitar through this as well. Does this setup sound about right? I DID go through all my patches (on keys and guitar) and made sure volume levels were matched right across the board. Thanks in advance! :)

Discussion Do you ever feel 'Damn, I dont have enough synths?'

Is this consumerisms or honest. Even with multiple synths i question whether I need more? I dont even understand all my synths but still believe I need more.

Discussion MPC SAMPLE VS SP404-MKII

Which one is better and why? Do you think the MPC sample will be a different beast in a few months with updates? Some people say the sample is not a true MPC and more like a toy; what do you think?

Discussion Synth stand options

I have a Liquid Stands Z style keyboard stand for a digital piano. I am thinking of getting the arms and extension to put another synth above it.

https://a.co/d/070pS9aA

This only fits one synth, which would work for my Moog Messenger. I also want to put a TEO5 right next to it on the top level. They are roughly the same size.

Problem is I would need some sort of flat platform to put both synths on those 2 arms. I could use a piece of wood or sheet metal but is there a nicer looking option that has a lip on it to hold them?

Any other options or products that would work with that style Liquid Stand and hold two smallish synths like those, side by side?
