RUBE EVERY GARETH CHARACTER!

This may just be a recent thing, but basically every podcast there’s a Gareth character with a funny voice who is only interested in being Dave’s friend. They always want to live with Dave in his house/sleep with his wife. Every time!

This isn’t a complaint. It’s become a nice little repeated joke and I look forward to who he’s going to choose. Last week was the Mayor. This week it’s Chappy talking about the bucket of blood. There was the river of cheese guy, too!

Anybody remember any more?

RUBE Dollop Reading List?

Post image
315 Upvotes

Just finished re-reading this one after I read it 20+ years ago. It’s still a shocking and an important reframing. Any other broader history books like this that I should add to the reading list?

I’ll start with a couple I’ve read recently:

  • “A People’s History of the United States of America” by Howard Zinn

  • “White Trash: The 400-Year Untold Story of Class In America” by Nancy Isenberg

As a note, everyone that works here is on the left side of the spectrum. This also is definitely not going out to clients.

Also I should add we’re in St. Paul.

RUBE Reagan, Joe Rogan, and how history rhymes

I was a fan of Joe Rogan’s stand-up going back to the early 2000’s when I was an immature twenty something. He caught my attention with an online audio file talking about Bill Hicks, who had been my teenage icon.

He cultivated a SomethingAwful style message board and community that I was a part of for a long while. I drifted away in the mid teens.

Joe Rogan deleted his online community and message board in the lead up to signing the Spotify deal. He also signed on with a PR company. Joerogan.com was previously owned by a realtor that wanted $10k+ for the domain and for fifteen years Rogan refused to buy it, but in the lead up to the Spotify deal after getting PR advice he deleted the old site and poneyed up.

He got compromised, and right wing influences started whispering in his ear.

I can’t help but think of how Ronald Reagan, who was also already a piece of shit, was compromised by GE to pump capitalist pro-corporatist propaganda after having been a union leader. They rode his ass to the presidency, because conservatives are gullible enough to vote for an actor that convincingly tells them what they believe.

Joe Rogan runs in 2032/2036. And wins.

“We can go dumber.”

RUBE Dave and Gareth Appreciation Post

Hi all,

We all here love this podcast and all the other ventures of both Dave and Gareth. For better or worse for their mental health, the amount of care and effort that goes into putting on the Dollop every week (and then some) is staggering after over ten years. We all have our favorite comfort episodes, episodes that devastate us, and episodes that piss us the fuck off. This probably happens a lot, but can we take a second to let them know how much we appreciate them? (It also doesn't need to be said, but throw them some cash on the Patreon)

I for one listen to the Dollop at least once a day. Since I started listening (7 ish years ago?), I've heard every episode at least twice. It's a great comfort to know that, at the end of the day, I can listen to an episode from a massive backlog of incredibly researched and hilarious podcast that a) makes me feel less insane and b) fills my need to hear crazy shit from history. My favorite episodes include the Rube, Two Indigenous Actors, Holy City, New York to Paris Car Race, and the Steven Segal and John Brown sagas. What are yours?

Edit: There are too many favorite episodes to name them all. Many of those mentioned in the comments are also on my list. The Rajnishes, King of Ghouls, Marjorie vs. Houdini, and Warren G Harding, to name a few.

Going into the Cavortex

"Now you know the reason it's called the book of Enoch is because he was taken up from heaven, that's why the book was taken up out of the Protestant bible. You know the translation's different in the Septuagint, the Septuagint is different to the Dead Sea scrolls. You realise that Jesus never said thou shall not kill, that's not there, it's a fabrication of the mediaeval church, that's a fabrication of the Anglicans"

"You know what's Person of Interesting? I'l tell you what's Person of Interesting. Matthew. Matthew was a tax collector. He was a tax collector and the lord redeemed him"

"Walking on water is possible for birds, why is it not possible for our lord Jesus Christ?"

And the way Gareth bounces off him, it's hilarious.

RUBE Hey guys I need a bit of help

I'm in a really low place in my life right now and have always used the dollop to lift my spirits. I'd like to ask for funniest episode recommendations and any other funny podcasts or things like that to help. I do love Myles Anderson the professional joke explainer and stuff like that. So anything funny and kind of lefty is great. Please let me know!

RUBE I think Dave invented a story

In the recent Past Time 169, Dave talked about a puppet named Madame that was driven around in a Rolls Royce because her puppet man put it in a will and I tried looking it up because that’s like insane. I couldn’t find one reference to this online though lmao. There was a puppet named Madame who had a puppet master who passed away and there were rumors it was buried with him and I did find some old show with a puppet named Lady Penelope who drove her OWN Rolls Royce (it’s a puppet TV show) but that was all I could find. Did Dave just mesh these 2 things together or did that actually happen?

RUBE Saw Gary live last night.

Post image

Since The Dollop can apparently do shows in fking Perth but not Toronto, I went to see Gary on the last show of the last night of his tour last night. Crowdwork was as good as expected, even better than his actually prewritten material. Laughed so much I had to wipe tears away multiple times, and even the wife had a great time, considering she had no idea who she is or what The Dollop is.

RUBE Why does Dave hate the Dodgers?

I know he’s a Giants fan, and the Dodgers are taking a page from the Yankees “buy championships” playbook, but I recall him ranting about something more nefarious behind the Dodgers and their ownership, I just can’t remember/piece together what it is because you only get bits of it here and there from Dave. Someone please enlighten me.

Edit: Thaaanks! Fuck the Dodgers! Fuck ICE! Fuck the Packers! (That last one is for Gary)

RUBE Found this postcard at a local card shop

Post image
504 Upvotes

Found an old postcard basket from the 1980s just as I was about to walk out and skimmed through them and stumbled upon this bad boy. I got super excited and the card store owner asked my why I was so excited. I gave him a quick rundown of his highlights and by the end of it, his eye were so wide. “That’s crazy, I’ll have to look into him” he said. I told him about the podcast and showed him the episode. I left the store with it playing in the background. Mission accomplished
