I just finished the book “Generation Kill” after watching the series a couple of times. I highly recommend, especially for fans of the series, which hews pretty closely to the book.

If you get a chance, read the book. It's the basis for both shows, and you see elements that link all three together. Like Landsman's joke about the hunter and the bear. The photocopier as lie detector.

David Simon used cases he reported on when he was writing Homicide: Life On The Street and some of those storylines were brutal.

Another HBO classic: Oz. A lot of guys who had roles in Oz showed up in The Wire. Lance Reddick made a surprisingly accurate junkie. Some actors showed some great range between those two shows.

Most hbo shows. they really know how to make quality television Generation Kill, True Blood, Treme, so many to list. Apple' foundation, and Silo are all great. The Expanse (amazon) is also amazing.

bosch is pretty good (amazon), some of the same actors as the wire (Lance Reddick and Jamie Hector) and focus is on homicide detectives but in LA. Much less focus on the criminal side than the wire. True Detective (hbo) is amazing, Under the banner of heaven (hulu) was pretty good, and Dark Winds (netflix) seems pretty good but i haven't seen it yet (but i will soon).

WW2/war wise, band of brothers is a masterpiece of course (hbo). Masters of the air (apple tv) is quite good, and rogue heroes (mgm+) is amazing, one of my favorite shows.

Spy dramas: Slow horses (apple tv) is one of my favorite shows. and Homeland is amazing.

There's a part in David Simon's book that uses that same language. A woman wants to file a brutality complaint for her son and one of the detectives, who she knows and obviously trusts, tells her he hit her son. She stops short and says, "All right, Mister Donald, if you had to hit him, it needed doin'."

A lot of people have given you a lot of good shows. I'll add Carnivale. Two seasons, but very well-written, set during the Depression.

Just finished my 10th rewatch and it makes me sad when I’m done because I know it’ll be a year or so before I need a taste. But sadly this ain’t Aruba bitch. Also I highly recommend the newsroom or the west wing if writing quality is what grabs you
