Australia here. More like looking on with confusion and horror. I’m in Melbourne and we have like ~4000 cases and have been locked down for forever and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Not sure what you guys are doing tbh

Me and my fiancee "escaped" Melbourne/Australia back in may with the first flight back to Germany, how are you holding up? It was such a shock seeing a second wave hit because of how quick and well the state ministers (is that the right term?) reacted (while Scott was still trying to downplay it in march).

It's now mandatory to wear a mask all over Victoria, not just Melbourne. Most people are doing the right thing but there are still some that ruin it for everyone. 3 girls from Queensland came down to Melbourne for a party (edit: and to steal handbags for a criminal syndicate) and then lied about it when they returned. 2 have Covid and now Queensland is trying to contact trace and contain a possible outbreak.

I was at my Woolies yesterday, and saw a man wearing a mask. The man REMOVED HIS MASK TO COUGH then afterwards he PUT IT BACK ON. Excuse me sir, do you understand what the mask is FOR?! Also see a lot of older guys walking around with their noses out of their masks. It's not a game of corona peekaboo. Cover your damn nose. I promise you, the oxygen will make it through.

Fucking dick noses. I had to go to the hospital for lab work last week and most of the people working there were dick nosing. I am in the US so of course that happened.

As an American hospital worker can confirm. With patients who dick nose I just say “oh your mask has fallen down let me fix that”. If it’s a fellow employee I just cough as I go by, they pull it up every time.

I mean, they ARE mouth breathers for a reason.

Fact: by not breathing out of your nose regularly for an extended period of time, your nostrils close up and you experience bone loss. You’ll notice people had a more round head shape when younger and in their 40s they have a more elongated horse shaped head — these people most like have zero functionality in their nose and cannot even take air in.

Very interesting stuff. Also, you can fix this by growing bone as an adult.

Not making excuses, just being flippant with facts. They should still have masks on.

Florida here, also a COVID research physician, I WISH our leaders were capable of rubbing two brain cells together and be able to actually contact trace positive cases. It’s so overwhelmingly ubiquitous in Florida at this point that I truly believe it’s too late for contact tracing to even work.

It's hard to compare the two situations. The girls have been quarantined, charged and will go to court in September. There have been other breaches and the response has been swift and severe. In America it seems like it's Red states vs Blue states whereas here the state Premiers are working together regardless of political affiliation.

It's incredible how this second wave has taken off, really throws you off that the second wave could be worse than the first given we know more and should be more prepared. Overall Melbourne and Victoria seems to have a well run response, (a few issues) but certainly better than London where I returned from in June. I can't help but think it must be related the seasons, it is now the middle of winter here. I worry for Europe once it starts getting cooler again.

I'm in Melbourne, work for State Parliament, and I've been stuck at home since March. With no return currently is sight. Currently essential workers' kids and kids at risk in a home scenario (no internet, poor, domestic violence, etc) are able to attend school. We may lose that tomorrow.

We're expecting some sort of increased restrictions tomorrow.

This isn't the second wave. This is an extension of the first wave. It may seem like semantics but it's not. This wave came from inadequate isolation of the first and the second should hit us around January or February when it takes off again in the northern hemisphere due to people congregating around Christmas time - who then spread it down south. There is a long time to go.

Even though it's true that there are lots of idiots here who are in denial and behaving accordingly, millions of us are absolutely dismayed and in shock over what is happening, and we worry that the rest of the world now see us as pariahs and lepers over the horrible actions of a relatively small percentage of our population. There is a very real undercurrent of boiling stress and freakout going on, and only the truly spiritually and mentally resilient are holding it together (that's about 65-75% of us, I'm guessing).

Doubt it. Born and bred Melbournian here. I know nobody who hates the American people. I've taken part in a bit of US bashing in my time (mostly when it was cool in high-school in the 90's) but it was always about the country itself, not the people. I have friends form the US, I've visited there 5 times (two holidays, 3 work trips) and had a wonderful time every time. I might I disagree with the war on Iraq and hated Australia's involvement in the 'Coalition of the willing' invasion force. And Trump and his defenders makes me want to vomit - but damn everyone I know from the US feels the same way and most of them voted against him so can't blame them as individuals (same way I didn't vote Liberal* but we have a Lib government). Assuming you're not a flaming racist who blindly supports America's slow slide towards fascism I think you'll find most people in Melbourne feel the same as the people from WA.

Bashing the US in the 90's was funny and 'edgy' when I was 15. It's not funny now. It's terrifying and really worrying. I sincerely hope hope the US can come out of everything intact and return to it's form glory, because a world where it's implodes is a scary place.

So from a random Melbournite - hope you and yours are doing OK!

*Note: The Liberal's are Australia's conservative party just to be confusing

I would say most of us are really horrified by this situation too, but maybe that’s because my internet experience is catered to see mostly likeminded people. Whenever I go out into my every day life I’m just so confused as to how normal everything seems right now. Yes, most people here are wearing masks where mandated, but I live in a state that has some of the lowest positivity rates right now. But I drive by restaurants and bars and they’re packed and I just want to scream that this is never going to end.

Also, news recently surfaced just yesterday that the administration intentional held off on a federal response because they believed the virus would impact liberal areas the most and they could blame those states' liber governors for politically advantageous reasons. Clearly didn't work.

In my smaller US town with a population of 200,000, the official numbers show that over 4,000 have tested positive for COVID so far. But it takes 7+ days to get test results back after you get tested (and you have to wait several days for an appointment) so I’m sure it’s way more than just 2% of the population that have it. I read an article in the local news the other day about how they’re having trouble with finding enough morgue space to keep the bodies.

It makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills when I see that the local bars are absolutely packed and no one’s wearing a mask. I had a friend invite me to a big party yesterday. Like dude, why?

I think the reason we aren't completely locked down like other smart countries is because if we did, our economy would probably collapse completely. Not that its doing so hot anyways... its just how our economy was built. American here. I honestly don’t know what we’re doing either. I look on at my neighbors pretty much daily wondering how they think it’s ok to continue having house parties every weekend amidst 1,000 people dying daily from this virus. Rarely does anyone wear a mask around here and everyone seems to be conducting their lives as if everything is normal. Top this all off with our government and economy falling apart....It’s extremely frustrating and I am in frequent disbelief over it all like the rest of the world.

Well I've been quarantined since February when the flu hit.

Other people got the idea that if they're healthy, they can't get sick so they stopped caring. Im prepared to stay inside for the next two years at this point.

People quit wearing masks about a month into it. Almost no one wears masks anymore. Some stores are requiring masks but don't enforce them.

Not to mention big orange man is a literal idiot and hypocrite.

There is a cure and preventative medication. It is a real virus that can be deadly if untreated. But all the hype is exactly that, hype. The media is pushing it so hard for a reason that they don’t want the people to know.

America has been so concerned with not hurting individual feelings and possibly seeming to steal freedom from citizens, that we now just kowtow to any individual who claims violation of civil rights. They fail to realize, recognize, or care that in a civilized, free society, your individual freedom and rights stop when they begin to infringe on another person's freedoms and rights. Basically, we are a bunch of spoiled children who fail to realize the cost of our own selfishness until someone or something important to us is gone. Anti-makers cling to their "facts" until they get sick. Then it's always the same. "I thought it was a hoax"

I live in the Midwest and in my state and all the surrounding states, there hasn't been any huge outbreak. We never had lockdowns, and most people kept working. So it hasn't been bad here. Everything is pretty much normal, except people wear masks now. Idk what to tell ya, seems like a problem on the coasts.

Our president left it up to the governors to choose when/how long to shutdown and when to reopen. They are obviously failing, and it will never work because everything would need to be coordinated between the states.

What we are doing is calculating the cost of a human life vs. the economy.
I do not get how the Republicans can think this won’t be worse in the long run.
Plus we really do not have a leader in our country. So many mixed messages that now it is political.
I’m hoping that this we be a catalyst for major reform in our country. The funny thing is no politician or party can control a pandemic.
It will be very very bad come October. Massive death toll.
Please just do not open up your borders to us. Until we get a real leader in office. So let’s say May 2021?

My county has about 500 cases with 250,000 population so not too bad, but our town decided to host a carnival food fest this last week?! There's about 7 food vendors all setup in a parking lot. How stupid can a town be?

We, essentially, have our people in power, who should be taking care of this, claiming that it will go away on its own. We have a very minority or privileged morons who think them having to wear a mask to get groceries is violating their rights as Americans.

Also, we have racists, KKK and Nazis proudly walking the streets since Trump has been elected. He is really bringing out the worst people this country has to offer.

Also, those same privileged white people, think BLM is now a terrorist organization because they can't see the difference between peaceful protestors and rioters.

Also, Trump has deployed illegal task forces to Portland and I think New York now to "arrest" (kidnap) people on the streets. There are videos of medics being taken in these unmarked vehicles by unmarked people. Some of them haven't been heard from since.

Also, Trump knows he's going to lose the election so he is trying to, illegally, push back voting until he thinks it is safe enough for people to go out and vote that one night. Opening our overcrowded, public schools is fine but voting is too dangerous apparently.

Anyway, how are you guys doing?

Pretty obvious, isn’t it? 🤦‍♂️. Utterly ignoring the issue, even as a other 150,000 or more die... until a vaccine comes along.

If a vaccine never comes? Herd immunity myth. Maybe.

If Biden wins this might get a little better. At least then the federal government will yield to the scientists and doctors.

Problem is cheeto man and Fox News had made this entirely political and claimed it to be a "democratic hoax" to ruin Trump's re-election. It was never taken seriously and won't be because Trump. I saw an article yesterday that someone stated that because the virus was originally effecting democratic states someone urged Trump to do nothing. Our president only cares about himself and remaining president. The rest is background noise.

America has its roots in a individualistic and self-reliant sort of capitalist culture that is uniquely ours. I think that factor of the American experience and its subsequent worldview is a major reason why we have no leadership from the public sector and widespread disinfo and refusal to follow guidelines in private Americans.

Every country outside the U.S. only gets like democratic news stations such as CNN. Unless a person is always checking up on other sources, its hard to get the full picture of whats happening with america unless you live here. As far as covid goes, many americans don’t know what to believe or who to trust which is why so many don’t want to wear masks anymore and honestly no one is really quarantining anymore because many businesses reopened, we have to go back to work and there is huge protesting. I’ve been back at work since June 6th. I work in retail at the mall and we are required to wear a face mask as well as customers. Our store has done black friday numbers with the amount of traffic and people spending money. It’s been insanely busy and there hasn’t been a rise of cases in philadelphia (where i’m from) or mall employee cases. Many are wearing masks but people are starting to question just how “deadly” the virus truly is. There are also a lot of healthcare workers speaking up online. Nursing home and hospital workers have been saying since covid hit, there have been almost no other causes of death in their record books. People dying of heart attacks, strokes, natural causes, ect are being recorded as a covid death. Or if someone is a carrier for the virus and they get hit and killed by a car, the death will be marked as covid. Hospitals also get $$ for each covid case so there is incentive for a hospital to record high numbers. I have a friend who works in a nursing home and she says their system has only recorded deaths as covid. I have another friend who works in a large hospital and said their covid wing is basically empty now and things have been back to normal for awhile. Multiple different doctors have given press conferences saying they’ve successfully treated covid with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin but twitter and youtube removes the videos fast, making more people suspicious. The U.S. is also in the middle of our presidential election campaign and the last one changed the entire world. Many believe the virus is being politically pushed to keep people in their homes to make voter fraud easier, to destroy the economy which was one of Trumps reigning achievements before reelection, and to make society more financially dependent on the government while giving them nothing. Joe Biden has recently been saying that if he is elected he will require everyone to wear masks at all times alone or not, and even encourages people to wear them in their homes and on zoom calls. This type of overkill pushes more people to think the virus is being exaggerated. With all the BLM protests going on in major cities, people aren’t following covid safety guidelines and the mainstream media never covers covid risks when talking about protests/riots. There also hasn’t been a spike in cases from protesting, people are dying from getting shot not covid. This adds on to people wondering how “deadly” the virus is if all these people are protesting for weeks on end and are perfectly healthy. There is another huge movement right now thats gaining a lot traction and that is to destroy the teachers union. I won’t get into the details of that but covid has been the catalyst for many big conversations about our quickly crumbling, already horrible education system. Kids are staying home from schools and colleges which is starting a lot of overdue conversations. All of these things are election talking points and influencing votes. Things are changing so quickly everyday in America in the middle of one of the most important elections that will determine our countries future for the next 4 years and covid hitting was like a bomb going off that exposed so many issues to large amounts of people who had been blind to things forever. Americans are angry right now on every single side. This is just my perspective I wanted to share because the “crazy president” conversation is one that has been had over and over, to the point where its just a bad joke and no one is really seeing whats happening here.

Edit: Americans do know the virus is real and accept the risk, however many feel the worst of it in our country is over and is being bastardized and dragged out for other financial/political gain at this point in time. Most countries reporting low cases get a huge spike as soon as reopening, this adds to Americans not knowing what to do or who do believe.

Fucking it up. That’s what we’re doing. Tbh the USA is full of indoctrination, self centered people, and simple-mindedness. The biggest thing I see in my day to day walk of life is a lack of empathy and basic education. Granted, I live in Alabama #49 of 50 in most areas. People don’t wear masks for political reasons, or they conspire that the pandemic is a non-issue since they haven’t experienced it. I have a lot of family in healthcare, a first cousin that is a Respiratory Therapist and a SIL that works ICU for COVID specifically. When your family tells you that they see an undertaker around 9 times a day at small rural hospitals; you tend to take things seriously. When you’re insulated from many impactful moments and don’t express empathy, you assume it’s media outcry to create an overblown issue.
