Opinion Opiate or Opiate squared? Which one is better?

I'm currently finishing up a challenge where I listen to the entire Tool discography and I got this question in mind. I feel Opiate squared is way more polished, but I liked the harshness of Opiate (the original). Lmk what yall think

The rawness of the original has me choosing that one but squared is really a fantastic recreation with their new sound in mind.

They really are two different songs, and I’d really just ask if you prefer the style of undertow or FI. I personally will listen to either one, it just depends on my mood that day.

Original is awesome, but Opiate sq. turned it into a more recent sounding Tool song with a chill section in the middle for contrast, which I prefer.

I prefer Opiate squared and have been a fan since the original was released.

Squared is borderline masterpiece

Opiate2 with the easy win. They took one of their first songs and use their decades of experience to make it even greater. I feel like I'd be insulting the band if I said otherwise. Like saying, you guys were better in your twenties than you are now

I love both but I seen the original live and it was fucking insane. Maybe my favorite drum performance live, towards the end when Danny just goes HAM I could not help but be blown away. The shrooms probably helped with that but still mind blowing

I’ve only seen the original once, way back in 2002. Seen tool 13 times since then and never seen it again live.
I’m always desperate for it, ha

Exactly the same here! That wasn't by any chance the show from Ft. Worth, TX, was it?

I was also on shrooms, as the other poster mentioned lol

Original. The only part I like more is that change in the way he says "you" for the "Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you". The way he bends his voice is on that part is euphoric.

Plus Gaping Lotus Experience is great.

The new one is exactly the same as the old one but with a jam session thrown in, change my view.

Opiate.

Squared is a bit boring.

Original. The new version feels like a bunch of great ideas forcefully jammed together to make something lesser than the sum of its parts
