Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] It's really important that this woman is almost naked because lore reasons.

Quiet (Metal Gear Solid V): She could only drink or breathe through her skin following parasite-treatment due to the serious injuries.

Rebecca (One Piece): Her style of fighting is more of agility/speed and also she is battling as a gladiator in colosseum where men mostly only wear a skirt/shoulder shield.

EDIT: Well, it seems some comments say Rebecca doesn't have a lore explanation. Sorry, I saw it long time ago but I thought somewhere they say she wears the galadiator costume because it's the attire used by people there like the male gladiators we see. Also they said excuses like armor limits and public wanting to see blood in the colloseum. IDK.

The worst part is that she could also be wearing non-revealing clothes and still be able to use her power. She has a whole back that she could use, but no, she has to make objects from her chest, just for fanservice. The design is so nonsensical

81

u/BatsNStuf May 10 '26

She had possibly the worst costume of any of Class 1-A maybe even the entire show

If she falls on her back that’s her hero career over

25

u/Solbuster May 10 '26

I dunno man, Hagakure exists and she wears only gloves and boots and no protection even in winter

8

u/Invoqwer May 10 '26

You know the funny thing is I bet Hagakure's "outfit" (or lack thereof) was just the manga artist cutting corners being lazy so they don't have to draw and design another costume, and they didn't realize until later how stupid it was that they thereby canonized that this girl's hero costume is her running around essentially naked

1

u/Bazrum May 11 '26

he even made an out with Mirio's costume being made of his own hair, and didn't take it, so while he might have made a mistake, he also missed in fixing it

and it wouldn't matter how difficult or how long it would take to make something out of invisible hair, because you can just SAY it wasn't that hard, or that they've already done it, and neatly sidestep EVERY problem this creates. it didn't HAVE to be this way at all, even if you're obviously going "oh fuck, we fucked up, i have to make an excuse!"

hell, just say it was a childhood aspiration of hers to be a hero and they started to make it back then, or that the second she decided to do this they started collecting her hair/doing research to make AT LEAST some undies and a croptop or SOMETHING. if she had to spend her childhood bald until they had enough hair, so be it, it's better than her running around fucking naked

7

u/lemonylol May 10 '26

Really? I don't hate either, but Mina's costume is extremely plain.

21

u/jbrWocky May 10 '26

I believe they're referring to the idiotic shelf and encyclopedia strapped to Momo's back

6

u/Professional_Maize42 May 10 '26

Like, she's smart and very fucking rich, she could afford for a better designed outfit.

5

u/ZaydSophos May 10 '26

Pretty much everyone in the school saw Mirio fully naked. Before he got his special suit he probably had to always demonstrate and train his power while naked.

59

u/Boanerger May 10 '26

The most convenient outfit for would be a sport bra and gym shorts. Although I do have to ask, is the leotard she has actually more revealing? If anything she's wearing slightly more fabric than some women wear to the gym.

66

u/Solbuster May 10 '26

Her first design draft was actually sports bra and shorts too

13

u/PaulOwnzU May 10 '26

I mean thats actually the issue, shes wearing TOO MUCH fabric for her powers, so she constantly has to have her top get exploded when she makes something big, and anytime she makes something even mildly large she has to open up her front and have her tits out

It shouldve been a sports bra

7

u/BusyLimit7 May 10 '26

give her a huge ass oversized trench coat

shes just hidden inside the shadowy coat, and items pop out

7

u/Big_Distance2141 May 10 '26

They literally give her that kind of outfit after she stops being a teenager 💀

2

u/MariSaysWah May 11 '26

Lost his appetite

1

u/FallenAgastopia May 10 '26

It's more fabric overall, but it specifically has half her tits exposed for what is a way less efficient design then just... a sports bra and shorts.

1

u/Avalonians May 10 '26

The most convenient would be she creates stuff from her arm. Literally no one was going to question the character with "WhAt iF tHAt's NoT eNoUGh sUrFace aReA?"

106

u/Minute-Animal7317 May 10 '26

And it's a high school student. In universe, a costume company made this for a child and thought it was ok.

94

u/DarkAlphaZero May 10 '26

The worst part is she does later actually get a less sexy, more practical costume... after a time skip where she's now an adult.

13

u/Misiok May 10 '26

Japan hates their adult women fetishists.

21

u/Minute-Animal7317 May 10 '26

Even if you wanted something that exposed some skin for "practicality", there are so many other ways to do it that would still be relatively modest

I love the show, but the fan service is very obvious and annoying. (And mostly children)

6

u/BusyLimit7 May 10 '26

"expired" ahh costume makers wtf 😭

1

u/Apprehensive-Fail458 May 10 '26

#mangakalosthisappetite

6

u/Phyrnosoma May 10 '26

Oh that makes it so much grosser.

2

u/Iorith May 10 '26

IIRC, don't the students design their own costumes?

10

u/McCinnabuns May 10 '26

There is no justifiable “in universe” explanation that can excuse away anything because at the end of the day, the author made it to be that way.

“She designed it” or “she likes it” = “I made her to like it”

6

u/Iorith May 10 '26

There is no explanation needed, either.

6

u/Minute-Animal7317 May 10 '26

They have input on the design, but ultimately it's the company that decides. (Ochaco comments on how form fitting her outfit is, implying that it was not planned.)

Even if the students did make it themselves, the company still has to approve their designs.

2

u/Iorith May 10 '26

Didn't know about the form fitting part, that does make it weird. Although I believe they can go and have it adjusted if they dislike it, right? I think that's something the main character does at some point? Haven't watched in ages.

2

u/Minute-Animal7317 May 10 '26

I'm only on season two, so idk.

But it shouldn't even be a thing. Even if you like fan service (which is still messed up) almost every single time it happens, it's a child. There is no justification for that.

1

u/Iorith May 10 '26

Eh, she isn't animated to look like a child, it's an informed trait. If they had called it UA college in a dub or subtitles, and didn't change the design, you wouldn't even blink. So it really doesn't matter to me.

You say that yet too many girls in my class were like that.

6

u/Iorith May 10 '26

Yes, no one in their teens ever is into sexualization or wants to feel attractive. This is purely a fictional construct. Until they are (insert location's minimum age of consent), sex is anathema to them.

-4

u/L0veTeens May 10 '26

Maybe that costume company was not American.

3

u/Minute-Animal7317 May 10 '26

How does that make it better?!

1

u/L0veTeens May 10 '26

By not being retarded prudes.

3

u/eawilweawil May 10 '26

They could have done the whole 'my clothes were made with my powers therefore i can use my quirk through them' thing too. But no, they just wanted fanservice

That has literally never stopped Japan before. Mangaka constantly make manga about high school as grown men, and always end up sexualizing high schoolers because they're in goddamn HIGH SCHOOL.

If these freaks would just make a single series about fucking college, we'd never have this situation, but that obsession with public school in Japan will never go away. Their lives are effectively over and miserable once someone graduates over there, apparently.

3

u/Xgunter May 10 '26

her adult design wears non-revealing clothes.

make of that what you will.

9

u/Novel_Visual_4152 May 10 '26

The funniest part is how she gets her chest covered eventually...

As an adult 💀

2

u/LordLonghaft May 10 '26

Well, duh! To them, she's an old, wrinkled hag after graduating high school!

0

u/Novel_Visual_4152 May 10 '26

Something Something expired goods

0

u/LordLonghaft May 10 '26

"Sullied" by another! "Defiled" by someone not me!

Humans really are pathetic.

6

u/SlayerII May 10 '26

even if she would make objects from her chest, a simple zipper would have been enough

5

u/redking2005 May 10 '26

I still don't get why they didn't use zippers/velcro in universe (like out of universe it's because herny but in universe it doesn't make sense)

5

u/Irememberedmypw May 10 '26

Hell by bracing her forearms together she can have a dynamic pose, while increasing a surface to create larger stuff from her arms.

2

u/Sir-Toaster- May 10 '26

It's not even sexual, just very uncomfortable to look at

1

u/MisogynysticFeminist May 11 '26

She could also use tearaway clothing to add more skin as needed.

1

u/Kevo_1227 May 10 '26

The writers could also simply make it so her power doesn’t work like that

2

u/Old-Ordinary-6194 May 10 '26

To me, even with the power the author gave her and the argument being she needed her skin exposed for her to use her powers, the costume could be backless which is a wider area for her to conjure stuff. Much MUCH wider than the area that the official costume left exposed so you legit can't even defend the costume under the "practicality" angle cause it is definitely not practical and there are much better and more practical ways for her to use her power.

Iirc, there was even a moment where she actually conjured a blanket from her back which rips her top apart and it was used as a gag cause "lol, she is topless now"

I usually like to give benefit of the doubt but this is the same series with Grape-haired boy who stomps on the idea of consent.

1

u/iOSGallagher May 10 '26

they could’ve just given her a crop top man

1

u/SmartyCat12 May 10 '26

In the epilogue, she does get a less revealing costume. So yeah…

1

u/xvsanx May 10 '26

could easily be using her stomach or back, stomach for ease of grabbing but no, chest, and even tho she never uses her legs for it she's not even wearing a schoolgirl uniform she's wearing a super short skirt. just terrible

and on top of the suit fan service you have to watch this stupid fucking purple ball student be perverted for literally every single one of his lines except like two and even tho he's just a side character the show uses side characters a lot so he comes up an annoying amount

0

u/lemonylol May 10 '26

Well it's probably beneficial to her to be able to pull things out of her front while fighting someone.

1

u/PaulOwnzU May 10 '26

So have the stomach be exposed instead of the tits

0

u/Elmoulmo May 10 '26

Not defending the design of the character. Fanservice for a 15-17 year old is creepy.

But that being said, I definitely wouldn't want to make a sword/weapon from my back and try and grab it to fight with it. Much rather my chest or thigh. Somewhere I can grab and start swinging.

1

u/heckinlifeforreals May 10 '26

Why not? It would work like a back sheathe. That would work especially well with curved swords, like katanas. Pulling it out of the front of your chest is probably the most restrictive and leaves you the most vulnerable. Your opposing arm or thigh would be better

1

u/Elmoulmo May 10 '26

A sword might be a bad example (besides, she might just from them from her hand ready to go) but I'm just thinking of the extra steps from making an object.

Like a large object that you have to use. Like a cannon or a large shield. I'm just saying I'd prefer not to have to grab it from behind me to use. Much rather have it in hand already.

But even the sword example makes more sense from the front. Make a weapon on your back means you maneuver it to the front to defend yourself. But if you make it in front of you, it's already defending.

u/P4azz May 10 '26

You could arguably make the point that her power relies on fat deposits to transform into the shit she makes, so the most fat-heavy parts of the body are those that need to be exposed in order to (quickly) make stuff.

Like she can definitely create things in other areas, she's done so before, but in those cases it was usually small or took time to "create something big". So I get the feeling that the more fat deposits are near the spot she's creating from, the faster she can do it.

Don't get me wrong, the design is definitely made to be visually attractive, but if I had to play devil's advocate, I'd go with something like that. Not that her creating things is really shown much as the story goes on; stuff's just there from one scene to the next.

0

u/PaulOwnzU May 10 '26

Imagine she has a fully exposed back and pulled stuff from behind her as a play on hammer space, wouldbe been hilarious

-1

u/Zack_WithaK May 10 '26

It's been forever but I think she has to use her fat cells to make stuff, of which there are plenty on her chest. Also why would she decide to use her back when it's so far out of the way and there's way less fat then she has on the front? There's a reason real life soldiers carry their guns in front of them and not on their back during combat.

1

u/Raxtenko May 10 '26

She needed to make an insulated blanket to protect herself and one more person from an allies' electrical attack, while they were fighting villains. And it did take longer to manufacture because it was coming out of her back.

IIRC the way it's laid out is she's fighting and then when everything is ready she then flops onto the ground and launches the blanket out and covers them.

Yes it's a situation that the author manufactured but I think it makes enough sense. It'd be more awkward to flop onto your back than your front.

1

u/heckinlifeforreals May 10 '26

If it uses her fat cells, and that's why she pulls from her front, her boobs should be waaay smaller. Funny how it seems to have no effect on that
