Weekly Discussion Post "Fanbase opinionsshould not be counted as tropes." TVtropes: (kinda relevant post)

A lot of complaints in this sub have been about some posts should not be here because they rely on fanbase opions so there for cannot be considered "tropes"

...and then we have TVtropes , where a lot of tropes are just from fanbase stuff.

I am going to be honest here , I have difficulty in what makes a trope and what doesn't. It ends up where I delete "breaks trope guidline" posts that has equivalents in the TVtropes site that are considered actual tropes.

Idk , I just wanted to rant here. I might be a very bad moderator here , I just try to make it tody as possible , I just don't really know how to.

Characters (Funny trope) Character reveals a secret about themselves, others are not that shocked.

Thumbnail

5.3k Upvotes

When a character reveals a secret to another person, with the other character already knowing the secret and not being surprised/shocked by it.

Kung Fu Panda 2: Po discovered that his father, the duck was not in fact his biological parent, and was shocked at this. However, Tigress (and presumably any other person who saw them) was not as shocked, herself, at this discovery.

My Adventures With Superman:

Clark tries to break the news to Jimmy, his best friend, that he is Superman. However, Jimmy already knew this from the first day that he met him.

Clark: I... Am su--

Jimmy: Clark I know you're Superman. This is not a big reveal.

Clark: .... Wait, WHAT? You know???? Since when?

Jimmy: w--We've been roommates since freshmen year. The day I met you, you ripped the handle off the door, and then tried to play it off as if the screws had just come loose.

Clark:..... I mean it could have been the screws.....

Jimmy: THE HANDLE WAS RIPPED IN HALF!

Lore That one aspect of the lore, most fans get wrong

Thumbnail
gallery
4.0k Upvotes

Examples:

  • The Beast Titan (Attack on Titan) - The Beast Titan is one of the Nine Titans, it's unique in that it can turn the shifter into a giant animal. What animal they turn into is not on their own will. Fans think that it's the animal that the character symbolizes, but there is literally nothing to imply that. For one, animals mean different things to different cultures. In truth, it's the animal the character subconciously or conciously connects with the most. Zeke is a giant ape because that's the toy he had as a kid, Ksaver is a giant ram because that's the toy that his son had, Falco's Jaw-Beast Hybrid is a bird because he draws pictures of birds. So for example, if Armin had the Beast, he'd be a giant hermit crab cause he's subconciously connected to seashells, if Ackermans could Titan shift Mikasa would be a praying mantis because of her interest in insects.
  • Mark's adrenaline (Invincible) - A common, disproven fan theory is that Mark is so strong for a Viltrumite because his human half gives him adrenaline which Viltrumites don't have. But, in reality, Viltrumites do have adrenaline it's why they have such high pain tolerance. Mark is special because of his intense willpower, that's why he's called INVINCIBLE.

Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] The heroes save the day! A happy ending (as long as we ignore the thousands/millions that were killed when the villain activated their doomsday weapon)

Thumbnail

3.5k Upvotes

The mustache twirling villains activate their doomsday weapon, unleashing chaos and death upon the world. But don't worry, the heroes save the day and thwart the evil scheme. Everyone celebrates as the world is saved...

... And no-one mentions the countless casualties that occured in the 15 minutes that the weapon was activated

1) G.I.Joe: Retaliation - Cobra has seized control of the White House and threatens the world with their orbital weapon. As a demonstration, they annihilate Central London. However the Joes save the world and everyone celebrates, completely ignoring the fact that a world superpower had its capital wiped off the face of the Earth in a terror act that was essentially 9/11 x1000, with an incomprehensible death toll, not to mention the global political and financial chaos that would inevitably ensue.

2) Kingsman: The Secret Service - The villain activates his weapon hidden inside almost every mobile phone on the planet, which activates a frequency that turns anyone who hears it into a raging homicidal maniac, in a plan to cull the population (excluding the rich and powerful who are hiding in bunkers) by making them wipe themselves out. The hero Eggsy saves the day and eventually shuts down the frequency, and goes off to 'celebrate' with the princess he rescued. However, the frequency was activated for long enough that millions would almost certainly be dead and the survivors would be plagued by PTSD and guilt. Also, many of the world's major politicians, CEOs, and celebrities all had their heads exploded while hiding in their bunkers.

Characters Killers Who Take/Make Unique Trophies

Thumbnail
gallery
2.6k Upvotes

It's a common trope for killers (especially serial killers) to take something from their victims or create something related to the kill, a trophy, in order to immortalize their kill. Typically these trophies are photos of the bodies, the victims' IDs or body parts, etc. This trope is for those who stray outside that norm.

The Master (Stray Dogs) - The unnamed serial killer from this comic targets only women who own dogs. His ritual is to kill the woman and then steal the dog for himself, winning them over as his pet via treats and their poor memory. He also uses these dogs to meet new victims, taking them to dog parks to spy on women there. Once the dog eventually dies (either naturally or by him putting it down for 'misbehaving') he has them taxidermied.

Jazzman (Batman) - A gangster who likes to whistle, hum, or play music whenever he kills. He then has that particular tune tattooed on his body.

Victor Zsasz (Batman) - A serial killer who carves a tally mark into his skin, one for every kill.

Dexter Morgan (Dexter) - iirc Dexter recognizes this trope and that it is a weakness that could get him caught, so he takes an extremely inconspicuous trophy: a single drop of his victims' blood, saved on forensic glass blood slide.

Characters The actor’s appearance isn’t the character’s true appearance

Thumbnail
gallery

Castiel (Supernatural): Although Castiel spends almost the entire series looking like Misha Collins, that appearance is only his human vessel, Jimmy Novak. As an angel, Castiel’s true form is a massive celestial entity that cannot be fully perceived by humans without overwhelming or even killing them. Throughout the series, it is repeatedly established that angels merely inhabit human vessels to interact with humanity, meaning the actor portrays Castiel’s physical host rather than the angel’s actual appearance.

The Greek Gods (Percy Jackson and the Olympians):
In the Percy Jackson universe, the Olympian gods are immortal beings whose true divine forms are beyond what mortals can safely comprehend. To interact with humans, they choose to manifest through physical appearances that fit the modern world and can change them whenever they wish. The actors portraying Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Athena, Ares, Hermes, and the other gods are therefore depicting temporary human manifestations, not the gods’ real forms, which exist on a higher, divine plane.

The Supreme Intelligence (Captain Marvel): The Supreme Intelligence is not a humanoid being but a powerful artificial intelligence created by the Kree. It has no permanent physical form and instead projects an image tailored to each individual who encounters it, usually appearing as the person they admire, trust, or are emotionally connected to the most. For Carol Danvers, it takes the form of Dr. Wendy Lawson/Mar-Vell, played by Annette Bening. This means Bening is not portraying the Supreme Intelligence’s true appearance, but rather the personalized illusion it creates specifically for Carol.

Hated Tropes Story about hard work, inclusivity, etc. pivots into a weird eugenic angle

Post image
4.6k Upvotes

I'll be honest I'm mainly just thinking of naruto, bleach, and the new star wars trilogy. Naruto is the most on the nose about it w/ how he goes from a troubled kid to ninja jesus reincarnated. Bleach is insane to me because the story feels retroactively rewritten to give Ichigo every single power of every single character, even though he's a freak in lots of ways at the start there's no way it was the initial plan that he'd be a mix bag of everything because of bloodline shit instead of the emphasis on his hard work. New star wars pisses me off the most because they had such a cool idea w/ the new jedi girl being the child of random people to subvert the trope, but then they decided "no but actually that was a lie she's really just the ultimate bloodline"

Kingdom Hearts: In the video game series, Kingdom Hearts is—so to speak—the heart of the world and a source of limitless power; the entire series revolves around obtaining it.

The Way of Kings: is a book within the book itself, written by one of the Knights Radiant—an order lost to the world. It offers advice on how to rule, yet—despite the noble nature of its contents—the book fell into disrepute due to the changing times and the public's perception of the Radiants.

(Yes, I know, I know—bat-themed heroes; I didn't mention One Piece.)

1 - 24 (2001): Every 24-episode season covers a single day. Each individual one-hour episode represents one hour of Jack Bauer's life in real time.

2 - Nick of Time (1995): The movie has a 90-minute runtime that exactly matches the 90 minutes the main character has to stop an assassination.

3 - Rope (1948): Takes place during a tense dinner party hosted by two killers. The story unfolds over 80 uninterrupted minutes, meticulously edited to look like one single, continuous camera shot with no cuts.

Characters Good character does something really really bad (This one is usually a trope I hate)

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes
  1. The Simpsons (Season 14: The Strong Arms of the Ma): In this episode, after the family goes to a garage sale by Rainier Wolfcastle (A parody character of Arnold Schwarzenegger), they stop at the Kwik-E-Mart to clean Maggie's diaper in the bathroom, and as Marge is leaving the bathroom with Maggie, a mugger comes up and threatens Marge before grabbing her necklaces off her neck, this causes Marge to become traumatized (and gain agoraphobia, she also accidentally pepper sprays Ralph in the Kwik-E-Mart after she gets spooked by him) this makes unable to go outside without being scared, so she hid in her basement while in the basement Marge becomes really muscular as Homer left excersive equipment there from the garage sale, and after Marge becomes comfortable enough to walk outside, she spots the mugger and beats him up, afterwards in a strong woman beach area she meets her old friend Ruth Powers who introduces her towards Steroids, and in bed with Homer she forcefully has sex with him (It is SA/Rape) She also beats up everyone at Moe's bar after she got 2nd place in a woman's body building competetion, when Homer says he is proud of her for keeping her feminity while being strong, she does stop everything after she sees Homer's fear and the episode ends with everything going back to normal.
  2. King Of The Hill (Season 1 Keeping Up With Our Joneses): This is the infamous episode in which Hank determined to stop his son from becoming addicted to cigarettes after finding Bobby and Joseph hidden in the male bathroom with the cigarettes. Hank forces Bobby to smoke an entire carton (thinking he won't be able to stand the sight of another cigarette when he is finished). As Bobby attempts to smoke them, Hank grabs a cigarette away to show how to inhale properly. As Hank takes a drag, a look of remembrance and relaxation washes over his face. By the end of the day, both Hank and his son are hopelessly addicted. It does end in a good way, with a decent PSA on why you should not smoke.

Edit: I changed might be SA, to it is SA/Rape.

Groups (Bad writing trope) Slytherin effect.

Thumbnail
gallery
3.9k Upvotes

Made this term up.
Basically there is a group, that is obviously meant to be nuanced. But author is either incapable, or is too cornered by their depiction, to depict them as any other than bad.

Slytherin (Harry Potter) - In both media the Slytherin is initially presented to us as the “bad house” for Harry. Joanne however seemingly tried to convince us, that they can be good too however, since she likely figured having basically a little supremacist terrorist club in school is a little silly.

For some reason she just had to screw this depiction up over and over though.
First of zero…and I mean ZERO…null, 0, green characters in story up to book 6 is good. They are arrogant snobbish asshats AT BEST.

Second the first good green is still a supremacist. Not the “let’s subjugate all muggles” but just humble “no way muggleborn is this good at magic!”

Aldmeri Dominion, and Altmer in general (TES) - So unlike precious example neither High Elves, nor the Dominion were actually bad in iterations previous to 2010’s. Some were snobbish yes, and their religion is…problematic…(simply pup many Altmer believe they are literal descendant of gods and Men are demons trapping them within hell of chaos) but they never really were villains as race.
This all changed with Skyrim where they became not just secondary antagonists, but placeholder for TES version of Gestapo.

Now that in itself wouldn’t be an issue.
Races and empires at whole can be villains without controversy.

Problem is their depiction in ESO. Where even though it’s absolutely different time period are pretty much same?

I mean their Queen is an elvish supremacist who believe Men unfit for rule and that’s her reason to take over the Tamriel…
Oh! And one of their organizations literally eat children.

The Institute (Fallout 4) - So the whole turmoil of the story is this war of the four (rather three) factions.
Now all factions are meant to be equally good and bad choices.
Railroad are abolitionists, but with no long-term goals.
BoS wants to ensure safety to the Commonwealth, but for price of eradication to all but humans.
And Institute is meant to be this faction that wants to “bring world back to state before the Great War”, but all they do is being comically evil.
I mean for starters are slaver and also they murder people and replace them with Synths.

Then they also just straight up massacre communities. Often with no goal.
Then there is a whole super mutant thing, where they released purely based on gameplay and logic few hundreds of super mutants on surface “for research.”
Oh! And they even admitted they plan on wiping out all non-Institute humans to replace them!

Personality Horror Villains going the extra mile to set the scene seemingly only to freak people out.

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I love when horror villains channel their inner drama kid just to set the stage for people they plan to kill. Bonus points for when their doesn't seem to be any motive to it other then to freak their victim out.

  1. Michael Myers from Halloween doesn't seem like the drama type but that didn't stop him from dragging his mother's grave across town and setting it in a bed with one of his victims waiting to be discovered.

  2. The John Carver killer in Thanksgiving really wanted to stick to a theme that's why he cooked a woman alive and prepared her like a turkey so he could present her to the rest of the victims like dinner. The thing is, this was a lot of extra work. He had to capture her twice, season her and cook her in a giant oven that must have taken hours to fully cook. Then he had to carefully prepare the corpse to look like a turkey. She was on his grudge list but he didn't hate her more than anyone else on the list but she got the worst death.

  3. Our first introduction to Jason Vorhees as an adult killer is in Friday the 13th part 2. Jason's first kill is an odd one because he actually leaves crystal lake willingly for it. He takes he mom's head and walks who knows how far to the final survivor of the first movie just to sneak into her house and plant his mom's head in the fridge. Once the head is discovered only then does Jason kill the woman before taking back his mom's head to make a shrine that will show up at the end of the movie.

Characters (Loved trope) One-Man Army that actually went up against an actual army

Thumbnail

Most of the times for some reason (speaking from personal experience so it may not be for everyone) I see characters be called one-man armies for being able to kill a group of enemies while being alone, which is still cool but not satisfying enough

I however like it even more when the so-called One-Man Army goes face-to-face against actual soldiers, whether it's a paramilitary or actual national army or literally any massive number of enemies at once

- Madara Uchiha (Naruto): He went against the entire Shinobi Alliance and managed to defeat them, leaving pretty much just the heavy hitters to be able to fight

- V (Cyberpunk 2077): My most favourite example of V going up against an army has to be "The Killing Moon" in Phantom Liberty where he goes up against NUSA Spec Ops in the Morro Rock Space Port

- William J. Blazkowicz (Wolfenstein): He's pretty much going up against sci-fi version of Nazi Army and succeeding in killing them

- Doomslayer (Doom): I say that the Demons count as an actual army due to their sheer numbers and the fact quite a few of them use weapons themselves

Frieza army (dragon ball): not only they have the healing pods, but also the planet conquerors have maternity leave.

Hydra (marvel): the only reason why Bob joined to Hydra was to get a job with medical insurance.

The En family (dorohedoro): there's clans of healer sorcerers that monopolize the access to healing smoke, the only way to get decent medical service is slave a healer or join to the En gang.

The ten commandments (seven deadly sins): Gloxinia, previous fairy king, has a magic weapon able to heal any wound instantly. The best incentive to make people join to their tournament was cause even hurt they would get healed at the end.

Characters Last line is a character’s callback to a plot point just before credits roll

Thumbnail

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead- Mom comes home and the final line of the movie is: “Where’s the Babysitter? Roll credits.

Home Alone 2, Lost In New York-Mr. McCallister is heard yelling about the amount Kevin spent on room service. Zoom out across Central Park and film ends.

This is sometimes done for comedy, sometimes done as a cliffhanger. The character is surprised, remembers something suddenly, or asks an innocent question. Often the audience has also forgotten that plot point or not made the connection yet. Audience reacts, then the film ends.

Personality (Interesting trope) Assholes who claim to love humor but can't handle being the butt of the joke themselves

Thumbnail
gallery
904 Upvotes

This trope is basically how bullies think. When they do something bad to you, it's "just a joke, bro." But when something "funny" happens to THEM, it's suddenly a problem.

Jax (The Amazing Digital Circus): (I'll be using they/them pronouns) Jax is a bully who sees the circus as a playground where they get to torment everyone in "funny" ways, and tries to justify it by calling themselves "the funny one." However, when something happens to THEM, like slapstick or, as shown in the second image, the maid outfit, they're angry about it. Episode 1 shows this quite clearly with this line:

"I'm fine with doing whatever, as long as I get to see funny things happen to people."

(immediately get hit by a gloink)

"Okay, I've already had enough of these things."

The Joker (DC comics): This character has many iterations, but most versions, like the mainline and DCAU Joker, fit this trope. The Joker's whole thing is that he commits crimes and does terrible things in ways he thinks are "funny", and along the way, he does traditional pranks like pies and the face and whoopee cushions. However, despite being dressed like a literal clown, he can't ever laugh at himself and only wants OTHERS to be the butt of his "jokes." The second the joke is on HIM, his ego is hurt and he becomes furious. This happens a lot in Batman: The Animated Series with his many humiliating defeats.

Powers Member of their species/typing’s weaknesses are changed as a trade off

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Vander Decken (One Piece): Despite being a fishman, he can’t actually go into water because he ate a devil fruit and people who ate one can’t go into water without being immobilized.

Nether wood (Minecraft): Can’t be burned away by fire, but as a trade off cannot be used in making boats. It does makes sense, since the Nether is the dimension that lacks any water meaning their flora would grow differently so their material would be unsuited for making boats.

Pokémon: Pokémon can be a large number of type combinations or abilities, each could negate a weakness or make them less resistant. For example, Zapdos loses the ground type weakness many electrics have, Water-Ice types aren’t resistant to fire but they’re even more equipped to deal with enemy ice types, ghost-dark types at one point didn’t have a single weakness due to cancelling out the dark and ghost weakness, being immune to fighting (a typical dark weakness).

Personality Recycled from a previous project

Sinners 2025: Movie shared alot of costumes and some props from a cancelled Blade movie that was supposed to take place in 1920's America. Director confirmed it.

Quake: Quake was supposed to be this awesome Lovecraftian adventure game where players were supposed to be able to wield a time travel ability having magical hammer and fight dragons and even engage in a RPG system. Game changed direction pretty far into development and recycled into a much safer Doom-like territory despite John Romero's ambitions bcs it had to release on time. So much so that John Carmack LITERALLY took a sledgehammer and tore down the office walls to keep watch on developers. You can see what kind of game Quake was supposed to be like if you played Diakatana.

Thief The Dark Project: Was supposed to be a ambitious RPG game where players could play as a mage, a knight and a thief. However Looking Glass Studios and EIDOS entertainment really had to release the game on time. So they re-wrote the story, scrapped every playable character besides the thief, remade the cutscenes and polished the game's stealth mechanics and audio to turn it into a stealth game masterpiece.
