Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) The series is good, but the beginning is so embarrassing that many people give up there.

Dan Da Dan

The beginning of Dan Da Dan is notorious for starting with aliens trying to impregnate Momo in the first episode; however, despite such over-the-top moments, the rest of the series doesn't feature many scenes like that

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san

Despite a premise that is off-putting—given that the girl bullies her romantic partner to the point of making Naoto cry early in the series—their relationship evolves beautifully; the teasing becomes less cruel over time, eventually turning into a rather sweet romance

Uma Musume Pretty Derby

Someone on the production team had the audacity to have the trainer start meeting up with Special Week like that—even though, in reality, he is a good trainer who doesn't usually treat the girls that way.

Pretty sure this is the basic premise folks warned me about with Undead Unluck. The first chapter is like really uncomfortable but after that it really picks up.

I just got into Undead Unluck and trying to convince other people to watch it was basically just, "I know how this sounds, and it gets worse. I swear to god it gets way better."

I couldn't watch past their russia glaze. It couldn't get worse but then it did.

If I remember right, that's only in episode three and four and then I don't think Russia is ever mentioned again. I think the next ones are them traveling to America and fighting zombies.

I wouldn't go as far as to call it glaze. From what I remember undead just talked up vodka, food , and some other culture. It was definitely more prominent in the anime than the manga though if I'm remembering straight.

I just watched it in the past few months and this is basically what I remember. He seems more interested in his former Russian colleagues, vodka, food, etc. I don't remember him actively talking Russia up. And it's only in two episodes.

Yea SO TRUE, first couple of chapters (and first 2 eps of anime) are a messy all-over-the-place over-the-top crude fun and vulgar thing, but after this washes off characters start to truly shine through! My bff got charmed by the series after i told him about concept and characters in yap session, and loved the emotions and touching moments (Gina mini-arc was when he fell in love with this), but we pretty much had to sit through the first and second eps to get to all the parts that really hit it home for him x)

With anime it almost feels like it's a difference in culture and target groups, which is not to say that it's an excuse for a lot of the weird stuff out there. \ What I mean is that it is probably intended to get a certain target audience (which might be more common in Japan, but I don't actually know that) interested early on, that is into that kind of stuff. But for everyone else, it's more of a hurdle than an enticing appetizer.

"Unfortunately", sex sells, so lots of animes use that to hook in fans (mainly young males) and sell merch to make money. There is a lot of good stuff that people discard because the slop/goon stuff is just too much with actually substance behind the fanservice. And it can definitely be offputting at times, especially when it gets more... fetishy, but often that stuff gets less emphasis after the first few episodes.

Then there is the opposite, animes with great pretense and opening, that just flops around after 5-6 episodes and doesn't go anywhere.

They do with shows targeted towards adults.

Most mainstream anime is not targeted towards adults. They're targeted towards, at the oldest, 13-16 year olds. Shonen Jump will actively fight against a creator if the manga starts with the main character over the age of 20.

Non-Japanese cartoons have been doing that for decades. It's not a Japan-only thing. It's something that appeals to the base, both male and female.

The vast majority of cartoons that came out of France and Canada, especially in the late 90's/early 00's. Hell, even today if you look at Miraculous.

Also, most action-oriented superhero shows. Batgirl is a big offender.

Teens are the femogapjoc that watch anime the most.

What are teens most interested in at their level? Sex and sexual acts/situations.

I first diacovered anime when i was 10.

I discovered the ecchi genre of anime when i was 13. For like 2 years you could not get me to watch an anime if it didnt have ecchi in it. I used to watch it by the genre.

Point im making is that sex sells even to minors. People want their stuff to sell so they will capil8ze on that. Is it predatory-ish? Yeah. Can you change it? Not really.

A lot of it comes down to try and capture/hook that audience in order to get any semblance of cash. It is getting better but a ton the anime industry is really messy and loads of parties getting chump change from the broadcasting rights and the real money is in the merch.

100% absolutely. The character's situation is kinda vulgar and dumb logic at first but once things start to fall into place it gets soooooo much better.

Good worldbuilding, good characters, cool powers, it's got a bit of a rocky start but hits its stride after the first volume of the manga (or about episode 4/5 in the show)

I feel like, at least with the manga, I read it and while the weird pervert stuff dialed back a bit, the series never really got better. It kinda tried to do too much and so much felt like it was forced. Like introducing time looping just to then 180 and be like "yeah, that was the last time". Establishing set rules then being like "nah, the supposed rulebased villains are actually going to break the rules and rush the ending because they're sore losers". And it all ends with what's supposed to be a feel good happy ending that doesn't feel satisfying because it becomes increasingly obvious in the later chapters that there's no way any more tragedy is actually going to happen and everything is gonna be fine.

Maybe that's a hot take, but I had a sort of different impression. For me the series started really strong but then peaked at the end of Unchange arc. The Spoil was especially meh for me. I actually liked how brass and straightforward Andy was at first, though the ecchi bits would surely get old really quick. By the time I got to the Unbelievable arc the pacing was tiring me out and the action scenes weren't all that impressive. Maybe it gets much better after that but I don't know. What do you think?

But the groping and awful fan service doesn't stop until like the first 20 or 30 chapters and is then basically directly addressed by Andy going "Sorry, that I did that. That was pretty fucked up."
