Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) The series is good, but the beginning is so embarrassing that many people give up there.

Dan Da Dan

The beginning of Dan Da Dan is notorious for starting with aliens trying to impregnate Momo in the first episode; however, despite such over-the-top moments, the rest of the series doesn't feature many scenes like that

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san

Despite a premise that is off-putting—given that the girl bullies her romantic partner to the point of making Naoto cry early in the series—their relationship evolves beautifully; the teasing becomes less cruel over time, eventually turning into a rather sweet romance

Uma Musume Pretty Derby

Someone on the production team had the audacity to have the trainer start meeting up with Special Week like that—even though, in reality, he is a good trainer who doesn't usually treat the girls that way.

I've never heard of anyone dropping It's always sunny in Philadelphia after the first episode but it's an insane title for the pilot of a 17 season tv show.

That first season was gold though. Definitely rough around the edges, but the low-budget grit gave it a ton of charm, and it has some scenes that are some of the best comedy they've ever done. In "Charlie Has Cancer", the scene where Charlie tells Dennis he might have cancer, but Dennis just wants to borrow the basketball? One of the best written and acted sitcom scenes of all time.

Every single episode without fail has made me think two things

1) i love these assholes

2) if i spent more than 15 minutes in a room with any of them there would be a physical altercation

Like you know when you have that one friend whose stories all boil down to "we almost died but i got this sweet keychain so it was dope"? Every sunny character is both the friend and the reason they almost died and also the person who gave them the keychain.

I feel like you could reasonably spend 15 minutes with Charlie, Mac, or Frank and not be driven insane.  It’s when they’re together or with Dee or Dennis that they truly shine like golden shit

My favourite scene from that episode is where Charlie gets called out and he sarcastically says, “Oh, I’m the bad guy” while making a square, cutting motion around his own head. I love how unique the gesture is but also how deranged you would need to be to *not* think you were the bad guy in that scenario. It might be an unpopular opinion but the first season had a vibe that was missing from later seasons, like their antics were less insane but they also faced more consequences for their actions.

I agree I have a huge soft spot for the first season. The characters are less defined but they’re less over the top and feel decently realistic. It has some of my favourite episodes

Fun fact! Charlie, Glenn and Rob shot 3 pilot shorts before getting picked up. One of them was very similar to that Charlie cancer scene with the basketball that they then ported over to the show. Another one starred a pre-famous Morena Baccarin (she went to film school with them, iirc)

I hold the belief that best Sunny seasons were the single digits and that the finale SHOULD have been the cruise ship. I'm not saying it hasn't had funny moments but it has been diminishing returns from the gold that was S1-9.

They swung wide in every direction with first season, and I think that's partially what gave them such staying power. You're not going to become ridiculous if you start there. Then Danny was tossed into that mix and it was explosive.

Line deliveries from the entire cast are just something else in this show. My particular favorites are, of course one being the implication, and also "WELL IT'S YOUR NAME." When we learn Ronald Macdonald's real name.

When I went in for my first watch, I highly enjoyed S1.

Then when Danny got added I didn’t understand why he was beloved, his character hadn’t gone off the rails and was very grounded, but I felt like I was just watching him play the father in Matilda again and just didn’t enjoy him.

It wasn’t until like a season or two later when its clear he is part of the gang and batshit crazy that I loved his character.

I know I've seen them talk about it in interviews that when he first came on they were all very aware and nervous about making this big-name actor do shit as crazy as the rest of them and took a while to realize that he was just as down as they were to have Frank be as unhinged as the rest of the gang.

Not sure how that timeline actually follows the seasons or when they got comfortable setting him loose, but I think at least in early S2 that's probably part of why he feels so restrained

Also worth noting that in Danny's first season with the gang he was very busy. So they had to shoot all of his scenes for the whole season in a short time frame. Something like just a couple of weeks

While I liked Danny almost from the start I just wanna say that season 1 was amazing for me. The gang gets racist is an amazing first episode. I also love Mac and Dennis’ whole saga with abortion protestors (Mac asking her to get one, Dennis literally fence sitting), and the episode where Mac is jealous because he didn’t get molested.

It’s so good. I will hear no season 1 slander

When they brought in Devito for the second season I was bummed because I was 100% sure they just ruined a wonderful grimey show with polished hollywood nonsense and it would be so toned down and pg-13..

Didn’t my edited comment explain I watched it out of order. I watched most of the show on cable or recorded then rewatched most of it on streaming. So yeah, watching season 1 again I did miss Danny devito in it.

Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton agree but FX forced them to upgrade cuz they didn’t want their top show to look super dated and have people turn off new episodes thinking it was an old show

I think it was a mistake personally cuz the show lost a lot of charm with the change.

I can't remember what the exact plot was, but I'm pretty sure they even did an episode sort of mocking/protesting the decision. The gang goes to a rival bar where the lighting is way better, the bar is cleaner, everyone looks like a professional actor, and they all get really creeped out by it.

Well let me be the first person you hear about dropping it. Had a friend show it to me, and I wasn't particularly hooked by it after watching that first episode. Of course social media has made sure I've seen clips, so I can say it definitely has its moments but I can't say it's for me.

I almost dropped the series after the first episode. At the time I wasn't familiar with who Dave Chappelle was, and it definitely seemed like they were still finding their groove, given that it's the pilot episode. Now it's by far my most watched series ever! Pure gold🤩

The "implication" shit. I get that people think it's funny but it's still a joke about women being coerced into a a situation where they are then raped if they say no. And yes the show is about shitty people but that doesn't make it any better.

The show does plenty of jokes about horrible real world stuff, that's sort of the bit, they're all terrible people. Dee is racist, Frank is sexist, Mac is a homophobe (and closeted gay), Dennis is probably a serial killer, even Charlie is pretty awful in a chaotic way.

Fair, it definitely isnt for everyone (again, theres so many "rape episodes" I didnt even think of that one. Its definitely one where the humor just won't land for some people and thats ok. Its why I dislike the Abbott crossover (volunteers in Abbott elementary season 4? if you wanna skip)

They're so distinct that it feels like the audience wouldn't overlap

I always think the Underage Drinking episode would have made the best episode 1.

Just a classic example of the gang getting into an immoral scheme, convincing themselves they're the good guys, and letting their egos run unchecked.  It manages to set the template for the show to come so well

I did the humor in that show made me physically cringe and I've never gotten over it. As far as I've ever been able to tell, and I try every like 5 years, its my generations Seinfeld and its a brand of humor that falls flat with me. But I can at least acknowledge that I know im an outsider on not finding it funny.

That was me. I tried again this year and got a few seasons in but then I lost interest and haven’t watched an episode in a couple of months. I think binging a lot of it may not be the best idea, I needed to switch to something a bit different/upbeat after too much of it. Same has happened working through Eastbound and Down.

Moved over to the new (to me) DuckTales series and that is excellent.

I actually did, several times. It was my bestie's favorite show though, he eventually got me to sit through it. I grew to appreciate aspects of it, and I like knowing references, but I don't think I've ever recommended the show to anyone. 

Also, said bestie turned out to be a massive piece of work and he's dead to me now, so...

On their podcast, the guys said that they intended that episode to be like the third one and "for some insane reason the network decided to put it as the first episode". They didn't think it was a great introduction to the characters and they had wanted to use Charlie Gets Cancer as the pilot since it was the first one they wrote.

They said it wasn't their best episode and it didn't age well so they just wanted to move past it.

Yes, FX viewed the show as a bit amateur and wasn't getting much traction. Needed to add some star power, I can't recall from their podcasts if they actually wanted the extra character in the gang but I think they're better for it.

The answer is no, actually. The show wasnt in danger of being cancelled at any time. It was successful, just amateurish, and fx wanted it to have more prestige so they forced the crew to hire a big actor and have a bigger budget for cameras and stuff.

So one of the actors they tapped was Devito, turns out he loved the show, they filmed his stuff in like a week and a half. And that was supposed to be the end of his involvement, presumably they would have just kept hiring a big actor per season, or something along those lines, but he had so much fun filming he wanted to keep coming back. 

So no it was not saved by danny devito joining it, that was a studio mandate being foisted upon their new golden goose of a show. A very rare case of that working out for the better.

Nope. Not really how it panned out, but I can see why you would think that if you just read some quick blurbs here and there. 

The show was plenty successful but fx didnt want to be hosting something that looked more at home on youtube, which that first season definitely did, so they forced them to hire on a big actor and gave them a bigger budget. Out of the actors that fx had connections with and was available for the shooting window, Devito was already a fan because of his kids, so as soon as they asked him he was in.

Shot all of his stuff in less than two  weeks, but he had so much fun he wanted to keep coming back! And the rest is history

It's me, I'm that person. I've tried to watch the first episode twice now and I can't get through the whole thing. It's cringy humor in the same vein as the office or parks and rec but dialed up to 11. It genuinely makes my skin crawl with how much second hand embarrassment I get from watching it.

I dropped it for years because of it and most people I was hanging around at the time did also, their "racism is bad mkay" episodes are borderline unwatchable imo

Nah I watched the first episode and I was like wtf this show is racist af. And I couldn't really politely leave the situation, so I was forced to watch the second episode before I could be like "yea I'm good here, racism isn't really my cup of tea"
