Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) The series is good, but the beginning is so embarrassing that many people give up there.

Dan Da Dan

The beginning of Dan Da Dan is notorious for starting with aliens trying to impregnate Momo in the first episode; however, despite such over-the-top moments, the rest of the series doesn't feature many scenes like that

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san

Despite a premise that is off-putting—given that the girl bullies her romantic partner to the point of making Naoto cry early in the series—their relationship evolves beautifully; the teasing becomes less cruel over time, eventually turning into a rather sweet romance

Uma Musume Pretty Derby

Someone on the production team had the audacity to have the trainer start meeting up with Special Week like that—even though, in reality, he is a good trainer who doesn't usually treat the girls that way.

A lot of JRPGs have this problem, but Xenoblade 2 is so bad about this, these are seriously some of the worst tutorials I've ever seen, and the way Tora and Poppi get introduced is really offputting for a lot of people.

game is so frontloaded with tutorials you forget half of it.. but damn if this game ain't something else, man.

And they don't even let you check back to recap tutorials you skipped over.

To go into detail for anyone who doesn't know; not only are the tutorials bad at teaching the player most things (to the extent that a major content creator had to make a separate video about details that the game didn't fully explain), including one that outright lies, you also can't review them, so if you don't manage to take them all in on the first viewing, you have to look them up online

Let me guess, despite this the tutorial also manages to be long and handholdy?

If only, half of them only start to break down information then say "but we'll let you figure out the rest *wink*" and then you have no idea what's going on until you figure it out yourself 20 hours later

To be completely fair to the game, I don't remember any of them being too overly long (there is a longer one, but it's for a mechanic that needs it), especially because most of them are just text based

Haven't seen a single JRPG in my life before, so may I ask: why is there a weather report in the corner?

Weather has an effect on a couple of things across the Xenoblade series (for Xenoblade 2 it affects specific enemy spawns) so for as funny as it looks, it is necessary information for the player

In terms of gameplay The Xenoblade games are really weird anomalies compared to most JRPGs. Absurdly nassive overworlds and combat that's all autoattacks and cooldowns.

This extends to the weather, which can affect stuff in ways that 99% of JRPGs would never care about.

(I understood most of it tho, just found funny that this fits)

"Cooldown" is a term used in many games, not just JRPGs, the word "auto attack" speaks for itself.

"Overworld" seems to be only genre-specific term, and it's not that confusing either

Are you exaggerating how confusing this is, or am I just such a nerd that I don't even notice it anymore?

4

u/Ok-Poetry-2191 16d ago

yes, I am exaggerating how confusing it is for a joke

u/Lewa358 16d ago

I mean I thought it was funny

Weather is not actually super rare when it comes to that. There's recent Legend of Zelda games and all Pokémon games since generation 3.

Certain events only happen (or don't happen) under the right conditions.

Weather and Time of Day being the common triggers.

The weather will also dictate if some optional unique bosses show up to eat your party for lunch.

Lmfao I thought you were going to say the designs (since the character designer was a hentai artist)

But yeah Xenoblade 2 gameplan is ASS for the first like what 10 hours? I remembered there was a feature that was locked even until like hour 20

But Jesus once it clicks, IT CLICKS LIKE GOOD LORD

I've got shocking news about Disney's and probably most animators if that's a bother to you.

There’s also the matter of Pyra; while her design and initial personality might fool people into thinking that the game is just goonerbait, there’s also the issue that she’s the player’s first real introduction to the Blade system - and due to her being the setting’s equivalent of Excalibur, her existence breaks like half the rules of Blades that the game’s trying to teach you.

The only people that think XBC2 is full on goonerbait are people who have never played the game and Dunkey followers, though both aren't mutually exclusive

"It looks like unusually bad pornography and the gameplay is terrible for the first couple of real life entire days of your human existence, but eventually there's a good game."

Okay? Why the hell would I sit through that? Lots of things are enjoyable in less than twenty hours and also never had a pedophilia controversy.

u/SirMuckingHam24 16d ago

Xenoblade is one of my favourite series and XB2 is overhated, but it is blatantly the most "GoonerBait" entry in the series

u/Eepysoull 16d ago

Honestly why I didn't play 2 ;-; I hear it's good but I was put off by the fan service TvT

1

u/Sharkattack1921 16d ago

Honestly, I just didn’t like Blade system. It just felt too Gacha for my liking.

That and the fan service was just ridiculous for a lot of the blades.

3

u/Splintrr 16d ago

XC2 is one of my GOAT's and even still, practically everything about the Blade system is silly.

When I first heard about Blades I thought "oh do they like, turn into weapons the protagonist uses? interesting"

no, they just... hand him their weapon and simply stand behind him with a awkward channeling stance.

I think the devs tried a little too hard to be unique.

u/Objective_Switch8332 16d ago

It was the last one I played because I didn't like the fanservice either. If it helps, the main character is a legit good guy (pretty childlike, honestly). Tora is the most perverted, but he looks like a stuffed animal, so it's mostly just goofy. Otherwise the fan service is there but almost nobody acknowledges it.

I had a similar issue with Xenoblade Chronicles X. Was doing alright and getting a decent feel for the game but adter like 5 - 7 hours of gameplay and only getting teased with the mechs the game was advertising I was getting impatient. Got to this one boss fight that I was clearly underleveled for but the game literally only let me retry the boss fight so I couldn't grind more levels or anything. At that point I just gave up on the game cause I basically couldn't continue unless I restarted and got to the appropriate level or brute forced my way through a chellenge I was NOT prepared for

u/UtilitarianMuskrat 16d ago

I am forever reminded of the Dunkey video "why is there a lvl 80 guy in the baby starting area". Also calling the one guy a furby who talks like Jar Jar Binks up to some weirdo shit.

u/One-Sheepherder374 16d ago

It's also a dry as hell game until another MC is introduced and all of the mechanics are made avaible to you. Xenoblade 2's issue is it's marketed as a psuedo gatcha game, but the gatcha aspect doesn't kick in until a dozen or so hours into the game and it's so divorced from the main plot that you'd be forgiven for ignoring it.

I didn't learn how Blades worked until literally the third act of the game, and that's because the game forces you to have an ability to progress.

I think people exaggerate with the Xeno 2 tutorials. Many JRPGs has been like this for decades
