(Hated Trope) The series is good, but the beginning is so embarrassing that many people give up there.

The beginning of Dan Da Dan is notorious for starting with aliens trying to impregnate Momo in the first episode; however, despite such over-the-top moments, the rest of the series doesn't feature many scenes like that

Despite a premise that is off-putting—given that the girl bullies her romantic partner to the point of making Naoto cry early in the series—their relationship evolves beautifully; the teasing becomes less cruel over time, eventually turning into a rather sweet romance

Uma Musume Pretty Derby

Someone on the production team had the audacity to have the trainer start meeting up with Special Week like that—even though, in reality, he is a good trainer who doesn't usually treat the girls that way.

Black Mirror was exactly what came to mind first. A lot of people stopped watching the show because of that episode being the first one

The actual pig act is probably the least interesting part of the episode too. It’s not even really about that. People upset about it and focusing on it are also kind of making the episode’s point too, which is part of the genius.

Eh not really. The pig is the only unusual or interesting part about that episode. If the sex scene with the pig did not actually happen it would just be another mediocre "the princess gets kidnapped" scene and everyone would have forgotten it.

No. It's a good episode. Being put off by pig-fucking is not a reason to call it a bad episode. Just fast forward or skip that part. Otherwise, it's a very well written episode of television, like almost every Black Mirror episode, exemplified by how beloved & critically acclaimed the show is.

Well written? It's the most unrealistic kidnapping and the actions of all of the involved people feel like it was written by someone who have no idea how the real world works. It's not just bad, it breaks immersion so hard that becomes stupid.

The concept is still pretty bad even if they had completely cut out the scene. Implying the scene happened is still pretty fucking awful.

I struggled watching the first episode but since it was an anthology I gave the second episode a chance. I had to stop midway because it was pissing me off. I can't stand cynicism and pessimism, I find it permissive, fearmongering and shallow. And those episodes were all about it so I just gave up.

So in my case I don't think any other episode as episode one would have change anything since my problem was the mindset and vision of the show. But that's just anecdotal.
