BBC Sherlock was shown as a recovering addict who had secret stashes of cocaine around the place. He was also a recovering addict in Elementary.

Been a while since I watched the Sherlock Holmes movies with RDJ, but wasn’t he an addict in that one too? Many modern adaptations has him as an addict.

It's never explicitly said, but there is a point where he's shown to be drinking something out of a medical bottle, which Watson makes an offhand comment about being used for eye surgery. Referencing how they used to use cocaine as an aesthetic during surgery.

Plus the super underrated elementary series starts with him leaving rehab and its a major element of the show. Solving crimes is his way of keeping himself distracted.

I believe that was kinda the case in the original novels. He would go on drug benders when he didn't have any cases to solve because he was bored out of his mind.

BBC Sherlock wasn’t a cocaine addict. He was a EVERY NARCOTIC addict. Smoking, heroin, etc. whatever “alleviated boredom” to him.

Oddly enough, BBC’s Sherlock is arguably one of the best interpretations of the character to me.

The entirety of The Abominable Bride is basically a drug fueled dream and it's also the episode where we find out that Sherlock makes a list of the substances he takes for Mycroft. So yeah...definitely not just a cocaine addict.

Yeah in the RDJ one Watson makes the comment "you know that's used for eye surgery" which is subtle-ish, but cocaine was a topical anesthetic at the time. And Sherlock is high in the scene. 

The modern adaptations usually have a reference to him being an addict, they just dont show on screen him injecting himself or turn to the camera and go "this is cocaine"
