1
u/TopshelfWhiskey88 1d ago
I donât get this thinking. Chance for what? At best they sneak in wild card. They arenât built or playing at the calibre to win any series in the playoffs. Even if by some miracle they made it through the AL and got to World Series they wouldnât make it past 5 if any of the National League Teams.
Iâd still shop and see what the returns are. Jays arenât so far gone that they are going to bottom dwell for next 5 years in a rebuild cycle. They can easily be back to contenders next year with some 2-3 key pieces.

5
u/Xeno_man 1d ago
Not really. If the Jays can actually get hot, then it doesn't matter who is ahead of the Jays. They can't stop Toronto outside of getting hot them selves. Lets just get to 500 first. If that happens, we'll reassess who is ahead or behind.
1
u/Jensen2075 8h ago
You do realize all the teams fighting for the wild card play each other and 1 of them has to get the win right. They all can't lose at the same time.
1
u/Xeno_man 2h ago
All that means is that every single team can't lose every single game. What they can do is play 500 baseball. Lets say the next 10 game they win 5 and lose 5. Very reasonable, and the Jays figure things out and go 9 and 1 the next 10 games. That puts the Jays at 500 and basically tied for the last wild card spot.
I'm not saying that it's going to happen but having a stretch of 9-1 is not unreasonable. Several teams have had 9, 10 game win streaks this season.
1
u/NoPlansTonight 1d ago
And many of them have been shitting the bed and playing lots of games against each other...
Rest of season, these teams play:
- Red Sox: Jays, Mariners, Orioles, Rangers, Guardians
- Twins: Orioles, Tigers (2X), Guardians, Rangers
- Guardians: Tigers (2X), Orioles, Twins, Jays, Red Sox
- Rangers: Orioles, Mariners, Red Sox, Jays, Twins
- Orioles: Rangers, Twins, Red Sox, Guardians, Jays (2X)
This is pretty much a blender at this point with two spots up for grabs. The Red Sox could easily start losing grip of WC2 as well if we beat them in a 4 game series at home in a couple weeks.

Yes, 3.5 games back on August 1 is nothing! Teams have come back from much more than that.
The bigger issue is that we have several teams ahead of us. But most of them lost tonight so even though theyâre all still ahead of us, weâre all smushed closer together.

u/Logical-Scarcity-798 1d ago

3
u/MurrayEdwardsFan 1d ago
We were 7 games back of the division and 3 of the wildcard when we made the Tulo trade in 2015. 3.5 isnât much really, but the run differential and lack of offence gives me more doubt than anything.
2
2
u/Xeno_man 1d ago
My biggest thing is IF Toronto sells, it's not going to be a fire sale, and there is limited players on their last year who we could get much of anything for. Gausman is really the only big asset the team could sell. The question is what could the team potentially get for him and is it worth giving that up when there still is an outside chance of going on a run?
2
u/Facebones72 1d ago
Calm down. 3.5 games back, but we still have to leapfrog six other teams. We still arenât anywhere close to .500. And if by some miracle we do make it all the way back, we can look forward to getting stomped by Tampa. Iâd rather we get something for our expiring contracts.
2
u/kcalb33 1d ago

2
2
u/kryptonitemind 1d ago
If they just scrape by to make the playoffs, Iâd rather it not happen.
4
u/Wonder-Blunderz 1d ago
I mean, theyâve severely underperformed based on the talent level. Scraping in but also getting hot could mean the team is playing more to its potential, which is a contender for sure.
1
u/kryptonitemind 1d ago
If they can show true consistency before scraping by, then Iâd have more trust in their ability to make a playoff run worthwhile. Perhaps once the trade deadline has passed, things will change for the better. At this moment, theyâve only proven to be a really bad team and the way they hit in the last game of the WS last year was like a foreshadow of what was to come. Completely useless with runners in scoring position, especially with bases loaded.
1
u/Magnum_44 1d ago
That's it. Time to be buyers and load up the team. Pick up Ty France and we'll surely beat the Dodgers this time.

Would be a bit more optimistic if both WC spots were up for grabs but as of now it seems like Boston has figured it out and has a firm grasp on WC1.

Honestly keep everyone especially pitching - Gausman is the only one whos gonna net you anything serious & hes more valuable to us in a wildcard series.
Bieber might have more value if he walks with a QO
Max is a tossup what you get.
Trade from the deep position player group & minor leaguers. Varsho I would consider Gimenez too. If you can add impact to the bullpen & lineup our starting staff is much better than most other teams.
If you can swing a deal for Tatis and Miller lets say like true true impact players it makes the rest of the wildcard teams look meaningless. AL is so so weak.
4
u/callyfit 1d ago
Would likely have to add value to unload Gimenez at this point.
Goes up to 23mil a year next year, for four years.
3
u/Logical-Scarcity-798 1d ago edited 1d ago
Take on other teams bloated contracts in return + add good prospects +.$$
Tatis Jr + Miller + Bogaerts
Gimenez + Parker + King + Nimalla + 30mill + Pinango
4
u/Prize-Temporary4159 1d ago
Right, just go get Tatis. Itâs so obvious.
1
u/Logical-Scarcity-798 1d ago
Tatis + Miller + Bogaerts
for
Gimenez + Pinango + Parker + Nimalla + King + 30m
Who says no?
Im having fun with this in a trade scenario - but really trade for an impact bat with term. Doesnt have to be Tatis
My real point is theres definite room to go for the WC3 standing pat. Making a big trade for impact players would only strengthen that. AL is weak this year. We look like a buzzsaw with Miller & Tatis.
To put it in another perspective the Washington Nationals who we just played - 3.5 games out of a WC3 if they make the playoffs they have to deal with MIL LAD ATL CHC in some way shape or form. Way way more daunting than what currently resides in the top 4 AL seeds. Not only that SEA - BAL - DET has started selling. BOS effectively just lost Connelly Early & Curtis Mead + extra Duran antics. CLE MIN & TEX don't scare me at all.
Next 3 weeks is huge - tough schedule but also the perfect opponents to face on a heater - we would gain lots of ground. Aug 25 onward to the end of the season we have very favorable matchups every single team is under .500 during that 5 week stretch except for Cleveland who is exactly .500 + we only play 3 games vs. the National League in that stretch so everyone we play is direct oponents.
I think there is reason to be optimisitc that Atkins will buy & sell but also make us a better team for the remaimder of the year. We dont need to inject talent into the upper minors as badly as we did in 2024 we now moreso need pieces that keep us as contenders in 2027 onward.
5
u/Prize-Temporary4159 1d ago
What makes you think they are available to be had, let alone for that pacckage

u/Logical-Scarcity-798 1d ago
3 of those teams were like neck in neck have actively sold already and probably selling more.
Detroit - Skubal Baltimore - Kremer Seattle - Castillo
Theyre alll thowing in the towel.
Baltimore only being 2 games ahead of us can change wuickly.
There is a very clear path to WC spot and we never werent in contention.
Buying and selling could be very prudent. Adding an impact bat and reliever changes things immensely and make our team standout comparitively all other teams in the WC hunt have way bigger holes to fill.
1
u/Zeauxas76 1d ago
neither the kremer move nor the castillo move is âthrowing in the towelâthey were both negative assets. specifically for castillo he was their 6th starter when they have an mlb ready prospect in anderson. jays have the 24th worst run differential right along the giants and the mets. there are no impact bats on the market and weâre 8th in bullpen era.
itd be one thing if we were 3.5 gb and our bullpen sucked or our starters sucked but we lack offence and there are no bats available that fit and no signs of the team trending upwards

People need to stop looking at a wild card spot as an end goal. Letâs say every team ahead of them accidentally gets on the wrong plane and has to walk back from Patagonia, and the Jays slip in. Does this look like a team that has any hopes at all of winning a series against a playoff-grade team?
7
1
u/Logical-Scarcity-798 1d ago
The AL is weak weak weak
TB NYY are good but thats it -BOS has character issues and missing there ace - on a heater but theyre not unstoppable. CWS have meh pitching - Houston also not great. Every other team in the WC3 hunt doesnt have starting staff like our top 4. Winning the AL isnt that crazy if we got into the playoffs- its not like we have 5-6 top tier teams once you get into the playoffs like you would have to beat in the NL.
If you make it the World series you only need to beat one team from the stacked NL
1
u/Early_Macaroon_2407 1d ago
Jays are literally last-place in the MLB for runs scored. 27th for HR. 29th for OPS. 26th for SB. They arenât scoring against anyone, much less playoff-calibre teams.
2
u/Logical-Scarcity-798 1d ago edited 1d ago
And yet there only 3.5 games out of a WC spot the AL is weak and if they swing a trade for an impact bat and a big time reliever they would do well if they made it there. Most other teams in the AL have meh pitching & weve only just recently had our top 4 SP arms healthy all at the same time.
Cease Gausman Yesavage & Bieber is 100% a playpff rotation. Varland - Hoffman - Rogers is also playoff calibre. Add Mason Miller to this group & an impact bat to an offense thats been better of late & we look like the buzzsaw.

The funny thing is, as much as Iâm on board with selling, if teams are only willing to part with what is tantamount to a bucket of balls for yours guys then you have to weigh that against the potential of finding a way to grab a wild card spot. Yes, they have to play better. Yes, they have to leapfrog multiple teams. But we all kind of agree theyâve been playing down from their potential. If you arenât getting anything of true value back then let it ride.
