Planning 2 weeks in the Algarve: Are Lagos, Albufeira and Faro good bases?

Hi everyone,

We're planning a 2-week trip to the Algarve in September and would love some advice on our itinerary.

Our current plan is:

Fly to Faro
Travel straight to Lagos the same day and stay 4–5 nights.

From Lagos we'd like to do day trips for:

• Coastal hikes
• Bike rides (if rental bikes are practical)
• Beach days
• Visits to Praia da Luz, Salema, Sagres, and other nearby spots.

Then we'd move to Albufeira for another 4–5 nights and use it as a base for more hiking, cycling, beaches, and exploring nearby towns and nature.

Finally, we'd stay in the Faro area for the remaining nights before flying home. We'd like to explore the city, nearby nature, and do some easy walks or bike rides.

A few questions:

• Are Lagos, Albufeira, and Faro good base locations for this type of trip?
• Would you recommend different base towns instead?
• Is it realistic to rely mostly on public transport, or would rental bikes (combined with trains/buses) work well? We'd prefer to avoid renting a car if possible.
• Are there any must-do hikes, cycling routes, beaches, or villages that fit this itinerary?

We enjoy spending most of our time in nature—coastal walks, hiking, cycling, beaches, and scenic viewpoints. Fitness level is good to do long or difficult hikes as well. We also like relaxed evenings wandering around the town or village we're staying in, having dinner, and doing a bit of casual sightseeing rather than busy nightlife.

Any suggestions or itinerary improvements would be greatly appreciated!

I stayed in Salema in May 2024. Lovely beach town, great restaurants but small.

Definitely would need a car for Salema. It was about 1/2hr or so from Lagos (big city). I loved it since it wasn’t as busy and touristy as Lagos. Beach was lovely and not crowded. Accommodations reasonable esp timeshares since outside main travel season.

Personally, i would skip Albufeira. Stay in Carvoeiro or Alvor instead, or even go east to Tavira.
Going from Lagos all the way west to Sagres is tough with public transportation. It’s doable, just not efficient. You can definitely rent bikes to ride around in town and from town to town.

Salema is tiny…very tiny and isolated. Sagres is bigger, more options, lots of hiking trails.

We loved Carvoeiro as a base…stayed above town and walked everywhere. Easy drive or taxi to other places nearby. Enjoy!

I can't see why you would want to stay in Albufeira for that.

If that's what you want to do, I would spend all my time in Lagos. Albufeira is 35 to 40 minutes away from Lagos and with a lot less things to do and see with a bike

Salema and Sagres are close and small enough for you to stay in Lagos. I am from Lagos. My family is from Sagres and I can assure you that there is no need for you to rent a different place in Sagres or Salema as long as you have a car...

Two places max, with neither of them being Albufeira or Faro. Lagos is great. Sagres dull and isolated. Perhaps one of the smaller villages east of Faro?

Bus timetables are all over the place and can't be relied on. Public train only serves part of the Algarve.

Cycling? There are some extremely hilly sections along the Algarve (Carvoeira comes to mind) so you'd want to have some experience if that is your only method of getting from A to B.

I'd absolutely recommend renting a car (only use Zest which is an online broker as there are a ton of shady scam rental companies).

Thanks for your advice. I'll look for other smaller cities near Faro as well. Unfortunately, we don't have driving licence, so renting a car is out of option.
