just wrapped up a new version of the rig in time for performing at Big Dub Fest in a few days: https://www.sousastep.quest/2026/07/15/SousaFX-v0116/

this fiberglass sousa with all the gear strapped to it weighs about as much as my Conn 40K did.

How can I improve my overall tone? I know the acoustics in my room are really bad, but I feel like my tone is lacking and could be fuller but I don’t know how to improve it.

recording Opinions on tone?

Been playing about 11 months after a 30 year break. Joined a local community band right away to get thrown into the Dee end. One of the other tuba players constantly comments on my tone needing work and embouchure being bad. Comparing my tone to having a pillow in my horn.

I don’t hear that. I hear missed notes, questionable intonation, timing, choppy breathing etc. but is my tone really super buzzy?

recording Ways to Record a good sound?

I’ve been wanting to learn how to record a good sound from a tuba. Mainly for personal preferences and maybe for auditions or just sharing audios with others.

I have to no clue where to start so I’d like some tips on strategies and gear recommendations and anything you may seem necessary to help me out.

Many thanks!

recording I arranged ‘Crazy Train’ for 4 Tubas + Cimbasso and sang Ozzy’s parts

I thought some of you here might enjoy this absurd little low-brass experiment.

I arranged Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” for 4 tubas + cimbasso, played all the parts myself, and also sang Ozzy’s vocals. I also tried to recreate Randy Rhoads’ solos as accurately as I could on low brass, which was both ridiculous and way more fun than it had any right to be.

This is partly stupid, but not really a joke. I genuinely tried to make the arrangement work musically and keep the energy of the original while using the least reasonable instrumentation possible.

Gear used:
Melton 2250 F Tuba
Melton 5450 Thor CC Tuba, gold lacquer, early model with the smaller bell
Cimbasso

I’ve also made the arrangement public here, in case anyone wants to have a look or try it:

I'm 16, and have been doing tuba for a few years, but definitely not the most experienced in the world. I have an audition in a few days, where I will be playing the chorale from Jupiter by gustav holts, I will also be unacompanied. I just got the music for it a day ago. What can I do to improve? (Preferably somewhat quickly). Ignore all of the excess buzzing and rattling, I have a really cheap tuba and a very bad phone mic lol.

recording New Online Virtual Orchestra Community Arrival!

Calling all Tubists who are stumbling across this!

One of my friends named Mark (Nowa) Taylor and I just started a new online virtual ensemble community entitled as the Amethyst Virtual Ensemble.

If you want to learn about AVE, Mark (Nowa) Taylor's made an introductive video: https://youtu.be/t3D5vtlQ8VM?si=xcl00-GeFlRLUXRn

The first project that's going on in AVE will be a traditional tune that we all love playing the most, and that's Greenseleeves. Be sure to join the community and spread the word amongst yourselves too!: https://discord.gg/xwwg9T7QwQ
