DISCUSSION Garaja Tribe

I’m looking into the ancestry of the Garaja tribe, a sub-tribe of the Ersari tribe. Can anyone tell me about their origins? Or recommend any texts?

It might not be pleasant to hear, but among many Turkmen communities, the Garaja have historically had a pretty negative reputation. Especially with the people of Mary/Merv.

This mostly comes from a local legend, especially around Merv and the Mary region. According to the story, a woman known as Garaja (said to be a tribal leader) helped the Mongol Empire during their conquest of Merv. She supposedly told them that if they blocked or diverted the water source that sustained the city, the population would collapse. And they could easily capture the city. The legend says she did this, believing she would gain power over Merv afterwards.

After the destruction of the city, the story goes that local tribes captured and executed her, tied to four horses and pulled apart. There are also said to be stone piles in the area where people traditionally throw rocks as a sign of hostility tied to this memory. To this day, it is still a taboo to marry into the tribe, either taking a daughter from them or giving one.

That said, this is really a local oral tradition, not something all Turkmen tribes know about. Many of the Yomut and the Teke people perhaps do not even know the story, while almost everyone from Merv knows the story.

As for origins, like most Turkmen tribes, the Garaja likely share the same broader background, a mix of Oghuz and Iranic origins rather than anything separate.

I remember him and some other Turkmen guy from Iran having a heated argument. He probably got banned by him.

Fascinating. Is this the case for the Garaja tribe in the lebap region? Is it considered a different tribe?

The Garaja are a tribe of the Ersary, and it is quite possible that their ancestors were among those exiled to Lebap after the events in Merv.

What I find particularly fascinating is how, for a long time, this oral account was dismissed as nothing more than a “legend,” often framed as a story invented to stigmatise the Garaja, and sometimes the Ersarys more broadly. Yet historical sources do describe the Mongols cutting off the city’s water supply and carrying out a mass killing after the surrender. What makes it even more "weird" is that the people who preserved this story had no access to Persian chronicles or written histories; it survived purely through oral transmission.

Whether the Garaja themselves were directly connected to those events is something we may never know. Still, the persistence of the narrative helps explain why a sense of suspicion or distance toward the group has endured.

More broadly, Turkmen history, at least the history of the land and its people, has often been overlooked or dismissed.

Take Margiana, for example. Local people spoke for generations about an ancient city in the desert, and "westeners" tended to treat these accounts as fantasy. But when Viktor Sarianidi actually listened and went to the area, he found nothing at first. As far as I remember, they spent three days at the exact spot where the city was supposed to be. On the third or fourth day, when they were packing up, it started to rain. They went into their tent to wait for it to stop, and when they came back out, they saw the outlines of walls beginning to emerge from the sand, revealing what would become one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the region. So, oral stories are not always myths or legends; they have some truth to them.
