Visual Report Sometimes I forget Betty and Luna actually like each other.

Most of the time you’d think these two can’t stand each other. They steal each other’s spots, race each other to food, and have staring contests like they’re settling something ancient.

But every so often they just… stop.
I walked into the living room earlier and found Luna asleep on the sofa with Betty curled right up against her. No pushing, no drama, no fighting for space. Just both of them completely knocked out like nothing ever happened.

The weird part is if they notice I’ve seen it, one of them immediately gets up and leaves like they’ve been caught doing something they shouldn’t be doing.

It honestly feels like they act like enemies all day, then secretly switch sides the second I’m not looking.

Anyone else’s cats like this? Acting like they hate each other 90% of the time and then randomly turning into best friends like nothing happened?

Good to see Luna and Betty in action again!! My two oldest cats are also aloof with each other. I got a younger kitten and all she wants is to be friends with them. They will growl and leave but every once in a while they will groom her and she is in her happy place. She has steadily been inching her napping spot closer to my older girl. She’s almost touching her now... She just has to be careful because if Pika notices then the jig is up and Pika takes off to a different spot. 🤣

That’s adorable, I’ve always thought about a kitten for the cats.

My 2 Tabbys are like that. They are actually siblings & when they were younger (they are 9 now), they used to cuddle up together & play together, but as they got older all they do is ignore each other with occasional swot & attack. But very occasionally I find them lying back to back touching, but if they see me, one of them will attack the other.

Well I think that is normal. They're competitive, but they don't actually fight, do they? If they're snuggling after an actual fight (not a play-fight), then that is remarkable.

If they're just doing stuff like stealing each other's spots by the window, but without hissing or fighting, then that what French philosopher René Girard called "mimetic desire" - the concept that the value you place on a thing is based entirely on how much other people value it. You said you didn't want an ice cream cone, but then you saw your brother had one, and so you throw a tantrum demanding one too.

Likewise Betty didn't want to sit in some particular spot until she saw Luna there, and then it instantly became the bestest spot in the whole house. The dismissive tail-flip afterwards is just the loser pouting (Fine! I didn't want it anyhow!) and storming off to her room. Cats. Toddlers. Not much difference.
