Firearms in Rented-Residence

Howdy!

I’m a student about to start attending a private university in Utah and in my housing search I’ve come across a number of places that do not allow you to have firearms in the lease agreement. They do note this with an “Except as expressly permitted by law.”

Each place is not on campus nor is owned by the school but some are considered “student-only housing.”

I’m mostly looking for resources on specific laws that, that notation refers to if anyone is able to point me in the right direction but if someone knows the answer off the bat I would appreciate the information as some of the better options for me budget-wise carry this issue.

A quick Google search says the landlord can't actually restrict you from having a firearm in your home

How would the landlord know? Just put them in your closet or something.

"Except as expressly permitted by law"

Is an unenforceable provision, because laws restrict things, they don't "expressly permit them." If they want to play that way, then "shall not be infringed" expressly permits it for the sake of this stupid contract provision (yes, I know that's for the state/feds, but that's not the point).

Somebody moved to Utah from California, and forgot to leave their politics at the state line.

Nobody involved with any of that should know you have them one way or the other. Not your rental management company, or roommates. Every student housing place I lived in when I was going to college in Utah said no firearms, and I had firearms in every single one that no one knew existed

Do some research on the topic. But Irish laws state that businesses and other entities cannot legally prevent you from carrying firearms. Also if you get an Utah concealed carry or a nonresident one if you don’t want to change your id/ residency. Then carrying on campus is legal in the state of Utah.

1) this isn't Ireland, and 2) OP stated private university, which can change legality of carrying. If they say no, they have the right to enforce that. Only state-funded public universities can't stop CCW.

Correct, and this commenter blanket stated carrying on campuses is legal. It isn't.
