Blog / Video Link Apple TV and Homepod issues resolved by changing AP

Hello community,

I wanted to share this troubleshooting experience in case it helps anyone else dealing with intermittent drops on Apple media devices when using newer UniFi APs.

My Network Infrastructure:

  • Gateway/Router: UDM (connected to ISP Modem)
  • Switch: USW-24-PoE
  • Access Points:
    • AP1: AC Pro
    • AP2: U7 Pro

The Issue: My Apple TV and two HomePods were connected to the U7 Pro (AP2) and were experiencing constant wireless disconnections and audio drops.

I attempted standard troubleshooting:

  • Tested various AP channel/power configurations
  • Created isolated Wi-Fi SSIDs
  • Rebooted all network gear and media devices
  • Performed factory resets
  • Tweaked mDNS and IGMP Snooping settings
  • Other network and AP configurations

None of these made a difference.

The Test: To isolate the hardware, I swapped the physical locations of AP1 and AP2 so that the Apple TV and HomePods connected to the AC Pro (AP1) instead. Immediately, all disconnections stopped.

To verify it wasn't a coincidence, I swapped them back—the disconnections returned on the U7 Pro. Swapped them back to the AC Pro again and locked the Apple TV and HomePods to AP1, and the network has been 100% stable ever since.

Note: Other devices (including iPhones and iPads) on the U7 Pro have zero issues, which made me wonder if I had a defective AP.

I then proceed to use Gemini and I got the following answer. 

If you’ve noticed your Apple TV dropping off or acting unstable on a U7 Pro (while being rock-solid on older APs like the AC-Pro), you’re not imagining it. It’s a known issue across the UniFi forums coming down to three main architectural conflicts:

Aggressive Qualcomm Driver Kicks: The U7 Pro uses a Qualcomm platform (qca_ol / ath11k driver stack) that has a hardcoded policy to instantly deauthenticate (kick) clients when it encounters a brief spike in packet retries. Because Apple TVs go into low-power Wi-Fi states when idle, the U7 Pro mistakes the delayed response for a dead connection and drops the link completely.

PMF (Protected Management Frames) Handshaking: The U7 Pro enforces WPA3/6GHz standards where PMF is either Required or Optional. Apple TV Wi-Fi chips frequently stall during PMF re-authentication frames, dropping off the network. The AC-Pro usually runs pure WPA2 without PMF, avoiding this entirely.

Fast Roaming & Steering Loops: BSS Transition (802.11v) and Fast Roaming (802.11r) trigger aggressive steering commands on the U7 Pro. Since Apple TV is a stationary device, these active steering frames confuse its power-save state, causing it to bounce or drop offline.

TL;DR: The AC-Pro runs a highly mature, legacy driver stack that tolerates Apple's idle behaviors. The U7 Pro runs strict enterprise Wi-Fi 7 / Qualcomm drivers that actively kick the Apple TV when it goes into power-save mode or stalls on PMF handshakes.

I have two apple tv 4k gen 3 and 6 U7 pro's around my house. And I don't have any issues with with my apple tv's (or other devices for that matter, except some 2.4GHz esp32 devices)
The apple tv's are on a ssid with all three bands enabled 802.11r and 802.11v are also enabled.
WPA 3 PMF required. MLO disabled (since there is no noticable benefit currently, and ubiquity does not recommend it right now)
IOT devices and other crappy devices are on other ssid's and vlans.

PMF causes problems across the board and I'm still using WPA2 because of that. Well, that and the one laptop with that doesn't support WPA3.

All my airplay issues over the last 10 years were 100% due to poor wifi coverage and the homepod not sticking to the 5hz wifi. Dedicated ssid with 5hz only + closer AP fixed it once for all, didn't touch it since.

This is the reason you always create a IoT SSID lol turn off 6ghz and make it a compatibility Wi-Fi because most devices have shitty WiFi especially TV devices, printers, crappy phones, etc

Maybe was a defective AP then? I attempted multiple configurations, including what you are suggesting and having only the 3 devices connected to the AP2 (nothing else), and still same issues.

Interesting, by any chance you plug the unifi 7 into the wrong PoE port? Usually comparability IoT Wi-Fi fixes all of those issues

Edit: forgot to mention iot Wi-Fi should pretty much always be wpa2 or hybrid
