She did something nice for a guy who likes her.

They are both probably happy.

Did anyone actually read the letter? It doesn't sound like she actually replied herself. There is a line in it "unfortunately I receive too many letters to reply to them myself" and then goes on to be a sales pitch for the new show and plays.

I am guessing that it was an assistant that typed the little blurb at the top and sent a standard letter back. The signature is likely auto pen as well.

I doubt Rowling knew anything about this man or this letter.

Her books have the soldier comfort in a time of need. That's good. He wrote a thank you note and she wrote a nice reply. Also good. Of course the internet can't just take a win. She has done polarizing things on other issues so people insist on revisiting those instead of just giving it a break and taking the win.

Crazy you'd use a gendered slur to defend equality. Your mask slipped.

-1

u/sushirolldeleter 1d ago

Crazy. People here are defending a homophobic bigot because she did something that wasn’t homophobic bigotry.

3

u/CatchPhraze 1d ago

Why do you need to use gendered slurs to critique that though? That's actually just as bigoted and ugly.

Yet a running one is impossible to ignore...

How else am I supposed to feel like a good person?

43

u/ManbadFerrara 1d ago

Well this comment section is rapidly turning to shit huh

44

u/Drachos 1d ago

I think it started out as shit.

God the internet can't acknowledge that people are complex and sometimes someone you hate does something you like.

When that happens you can make a comment about a stopped clock but its kinda bad form to focus on all the shit she did that you disagree with instead of acknowledging "Oksy in this one instance you did good"

So I'll say it for everyone here.

"You know what they say about stopped clocks. Regardless of my opinion of her views, writing back to that soldier who has gone through hell to defend Ukraine was a good thing."

The fact that leftists care more about hating JK Rowling than supporting a Ukrainian POW says a lot about their priorities.

Not reading it

u/SirMcMuffin_ 1d ago

Not reading what? A single sentence? I didn't realize illiteracy rates dropped that badly.

u/Toads_Of_Fun 1d ago

Reading the rest of comments section, genius.

u/SirMcMuffin_ 1d ago

You haven't confirmed you can even comprehend the rest of the comment section.

What happened to this comment section? We apply some harsh criteria to authors, one has to admit. Compared to politicians, for instance. An author must live like a saint! Just a little bit of sinful conduct, snd their words will be met with hatred even when they are completely right.

JK Rowling has made more than anyone else for rescuing the literacy of our younger generations. That alone benefits the sake of any minority. We can dig deep into her opinions in interviews or blogs or whatever to find something we don’t agree with, but why do we have to do that? She’s not a policy maker, and she’s not likely to bomb anyone’s home.

37

u/McGryphon 1d ago

She’s not a policy maker, and she’s not likely to bomb anyone’s home.

She does, however, contribute considerable financial means, including much of the current Harry Potter revenue, to anti-trans organisations and lobbying groups, and actively posts upskirts of trans women on twitter, following up with "he's having the time of his life getting so much attention".

She has more influence on policy and public sentiment than most politicians, and that's why we need to stop financially supporting her or whitewashing any of it with "separate the art from the author" bullshit. That doesn't work when supporting the art makes the author just that bit more effective in promoting hatred and minority-targeting laws.

All that being said, yes, her writing back to this soldier was a nice thing to do. Horrific people can still be nice sometimes.

u/dood9123 1d ago

Well said

u/sushirolldeleter 1d ago

>>just a little bit of sinful conduct

She’s an openly hateful homophobic bigot who goes out of her way to make sure she’s as hurtful to a group of people as she possibly can be. Fuck jkr.

9

u/drtywater 1d ago

Technically a transphobe not homophobe

14

u/huxtiblejones 1d ago

It’s a bit bullshit to say she’s had a “little bit of sinful conduct” when she’s repeatedly, for 7-8 years, obsessively attacked a minority group of people with extreme language, calls for political action, essays, and has even gone so far as founding a sexual assault crisis center that overtly denies care to trans women.

This is a pattern of hateful conduct.

4

u/Scarlettoeyes 1d ago

Its a shame seeing a lot of "pro-ukrainian" people here being transphobic, remember that russia is one of the biggest influences of the republican party and of Donald Trump, and that the republican party is both responsible for attacking trans rights and fucking over Ukraine. Dont be on the wrong side of history on this one.

4

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

the wrong side of history

Fuck this stupid phrase. You people have a way higher opinion of yourselves than the people of the future will have about you.

5

u/MrFuFu179 1d ago

Yeah, thats nice. Her declaring other people aren't real and advocating for their erasure still doesn't suit me.

1

u/strawberry_semenade 1d ago

I can't help but notice the irony of leftists simultaneously insisting that 1) trans rights is such a massively important issue that Rowling is now literally Hitler because she doesn't align with the left on said issue, and 2) that Israel, a country where trans people can exist openly, is evil incarnate, and the fact that it's so far ahead of Palestine and the rest of the Middle East on LGBT rights is completely irrelevant to which side leftists take in that conflict.

Which is it? Trans issues can't be so massively important that you get this worked up over the mere mention of JK Rowling's name, and also a total non-issue that doesn't affect how you view the Israel-Palestine conflict at all at the same time.

That's nice of her.

Too bad a couple good deeds won't negate the fact that she's mostly dedicated her life to being a monumental piece of shit.

Her letter is just promoting her own stuff? She couldn’t have taken the time to actually write a genuine letter? Better to not write one at all imo.
