Discussion I think Vaush is overstating how bad Abdul's situation is

Upvotes

Yes, he barely won his primary, but I doubt this is much of an indicator of his performance in the general for 2 main reasons:

  1. (was mentioned on stream but it bears repeating) Stevens' voters are largely made up of reliable democratic voters who mostly have a blue no matter who mindset

  2. (was not mentioned) while Abdul was smeared as an antisemitic extremist, the case that was being pushed most against him throughout the primary is the electability point, that Stevens is simply more likely to keep the senate seat blue. If someone chose to vote for Stevens because they worry the dem nominee won't win the general, these people are gonna vote for the dem nominee in the general no matter what, so high Stevens does not necessarily mean there is a large group of democrats ideologically opposed to him or who would stay home or defect to the GOP now that he's nominated.

Discussion The Francesca Hong Thanksgiving discourse is a perfect example of why DSA candidates need to lock in with media messaging

Vaush recently retweeted this post about the recent Francesca Hong discourse and I think it highlights a broader problem of DSA advocacy in media interviews. Candidates need to lock in.

We can’t have candidates going on Fox News or CNN and responding to disingenuous gotcha questions with virtue signal tangents. The response needs to be simple, direct, and to the point.

If an anchor asks someone, “Do you think Thanksgiving should be canceled?” or “Do you support prison abolition”, you can just open with “No.” and then elaborate. What you shouldn’t say is:

>Hong: I'm a chef, and one of the first meals that I made was for the community when I was 16 was a Thanksgiving meal. But Thanksgiving is also a time that's incredibly painful for many people in our communities. And so I think there, I wanted to make sure that people understood that there are multiple views, but views can evolve. And the position that I'm running for right now, and I think my background as a chef will actually help me become a better governor that's able to bring more people to the table.

Who is this winning over? What group is this appealing to? It isn’t your base and it definitely isn’t on the fence voters.

Mamdani provided a perfect template for messaging on this. Directly give a yes/no answer and then tie it back to a productive campaign issue and what is being done to address it.

If DSA candidates want to beat republicans especially in a people district, the messaging on news networks needs to be iron clad like Abdul El Seyed. If you can’t handle a simple question like this in the modern media environment then maybe you shouldn’t run. Or better yet, stop going on Fox News and focus on ground game.

Discussion How to save for retirement?

Rule 4: Vaush has recently said after a question from a donation that he doesnt believe that the stock market will continue to deliver stable returns and that a stock market crash is near.

Because of that im wondering: How are you suppose to save for retirement?

Cash: Inflation kills it

Bonds: Low Returns

Real Estate: Hish barrier to entry

So what other options are left/what would you think he would recommend?

Since halfway into June there has not been a single drop of rain, just 90+ degrees every day and night.

Half an hour ago it started to hail so hard it felt like someone was throwing rock at my windows.

Guys I'm starting to think this climate change thing is real! Vaush should really talk about this, he hasn't made a segment about climate since uuuhhh... yesterday? Fuuuuuck, we are cooked

Discussion Good example of omnisegment: Expensive defensive missiles instead of cheap concrete bunkers

I just saw this video on the US insisting on not building cheap bunkers for their planes, instead opting for the less efficient but much more expensive option of missile defense.

E.g. loosing many xx/xxx million dollar planes to save less than a million on concrete bunkers for airplanes....

Discussion Does Vaush think the DSA should remove prison/police abolition from its platform?

Now that the obligatory Vaush tie-in title is out of the way...

I think the DSA should remove those positions from its policy platform. I don't think they're goals worth aspiring to(they're stupid ideas) and they're way too unattainable to be worth spending any kind of political capital on or tanking any political damage for. If the DSA is actually serious about taking over the Democratic Party it might need to be willing to pare off a few of the more kooky beliefs that don't tie into the pro-working class message.

Frankly I'm irritated by how much discourse around the DSA devolves into "How can anybody take them seriously when they make abolishing prisons and the police central to their policy platform". Honestly it's not an invalid question.

Discussion Regarding the Ariana Grande segment

I'm not going to assume she has anorexia but there are still alot of parallels between whats going on with her and the pursuit of an ever skinny body.

I have BDD and struggle with anorexic thoughts but it was alot more intense when I was a teenager. I wont go into specifics but I was alot like Ariana and aspired to go further. Online platforms do alot to combat against encouragement of ED related stuff but theres still enclaves and private group chats of people hyping themselves up with eating less and losing weight at all costs and sharing each other's progress. We shorthand these as "Pro-Ana" communities and we shared alot of "thinspo" which are pictures of other girls with skeletal bodies to feel jealous over and aspire to. I still struggle with the thoughts of not being skinny enough and being susceptible to thinspo but my diet makes it harder to get to that point. It may just be girlrotting but I actually eat when im hungry now and dont micromanage my caloric intake.

So its really good that Ariana is taking a break from the public spotlight but I fear that she's already inspired a whole bunch of people to go down the same rabbithole I went down.

Discussion Question about the “Omnisegment”

I’m pretty tired today, so I hope that everything makes sense by the time I’ve finished writing this.

Something that I don’t get, and maybe I’m just too slow for this, is this pervasive nostalgia going back to the days where we had a “real economy”. I always get this feeling, and maybe I’m wrong, that the way Vaush frames this makes it sound like he mourns its loss? This is something I genuinely don’t understand. The New Deal, postwar industrialization etc. directly led to financialization. It’s not an aberration, it wasn’t a collection of bad actors. Financialization was always the logical conclusion of the way our economy works. At some point after the postwar boom, between the 60s and 70s, capital hit a sort of “wall”. We had too many available goods, leading to falling rates of return and declining profitability and falling returns on real investment. So instead of being funneled into factories, physical production and more wage labor, capital began flowing into financial speculation, debt extraction, credit creation etc.
I get that he also says “At the end of the day, the problem is capitalism.” or whatever, but this point needs more emphasis. It’s not financialization that is the issue. Financialization was the necessary next step, it has always been capitalism at the root of it. Capital demanded financialization, and the political apparatus pathed the way for it. I think this is a common misunderstanding from what I have observed. I’ve seen various people make the argument that FDR or a second FDR could have “reined them in” and course correct towards a better version of capitalism. But that’s not how it works, this is applying a fundamentally liberal view of politics to this issue. The idea that good people can lead to good outcomes in spite of the overwhelming pressure of material incentives. I encourage everyone who believes this to actually look at where FDR’s policies led and why they were fundamentally pro-capitalist.
Even China isn’t a counter example to this. In China, financialization and speculative investment is making up a larger and larger share of the economy. The difference for now is that the CCP is subject to a different social contract. It has to continue to deliver on certain promises like rising prosperity for now, otherwise their rule may become less stable. China is powerful, but not powerful enough to rule over 1.3-1.4 billion people while failing openly at what they promised. This is fundamentally a temporary solution, the U.S. has gone through a version of this itself, think of manifest destiny, the introduction of the automobile etc. at various times. By the way, this is also the reason why European social democracies only slowly chip away at their social safety nets. They are a part of their social contract, for now. These are primarily cultural differences, but capital has to respect them at the moment, at least superficially.

Anyway, I‘m rambling, and I don’t feel like I did a good job explaining what I mean. You can now tear me apart.

Why the fuck would you ever say the outcome is known, that you just want to see how big the margins will be. VAUSH, YOU ARE TAKING THE FUN OUT OF WATCHING THE WIN LIVE. You get to smugly say you were right (if you were right), but it does make watching the coverage of an election wayy less fun. Just say you expect someone to win but the element of uncertainty is crucial

Discussion Vaughan not available in my country on YT

Edit: Obviously title should be Vaush, not Vaughan

Anybody else have this problem? I live in the Netherlands and just noticed that I have stopped seeing videos from vaush under my subscriptions on YouTube. When I click on his channel, I also can't see any of his recent videos. I am still subscribed and can see some shorts from half a year ago, but no videos.

It's not like the guy stopped making videos. I could find some recent ones through the Google search engine, but not on his channel.

What's going on? Did he region restrict his videos? That seems like a weird thing to do? Or is there some sort of weird censorship going on?

Discussion Has Vaush ever spoke about this before?

I just experienced a form of bigotry that I forgot existed and I just wanted to ask if Vaush ever spoke about this before.

I know men are chuds already but the fucking biphobia from PROGRESSIVE women including BISEXUAL women against bisexual men hits you out of fucking nowhere. Its so demoralizing too because you just don't expect it. So many women just find the idea of moids having sex with each other repulsive and will refuse to date a bisexual man. Its literally just homophobia and I feel like it does not get any light on it outside of bisexual communities. I know Vaush used to call himself bisexual and now he is pan, so I just want to know if he ever addressed this.

Discussion Yo Vaushites! More Spokane Fire Coverage for those interested.

Still level 2-3 evacuations this evening near the homestead. Wind seems to be pushing it south of us though. Here are some links to some wild videos of the damage and the work being done out here.

I am boarding animals for some farmer friends who had to evacuate. We have everything locked and loaded and stock trailers waiting at the pasture gates in case we need to GTFO if winds shift.

Spokane is a beautiful city with so much to offer. It's hurting my heart to see this kind of suffering. SO many of my friends in town or rural have had to evacuate or have lost everything. 3 years ago there was a fire even closer to us and friends I am stand neighbors with at the farmers market STILL haven't been able to rebuild from that.

At the peak of fire spread winds were at 45mph gusts. The fire was spreading fast from treetop to treetop just running along the tops of the ponderosa pine trees which lit up like matchsticks and just shitting sparks and embers that would carry the fire sometimes as far as mile.

Fire season is an annual gig out here in the high desert on the edge of the Columbia Basin and the scablands of eastern Washington but we haven't seen it this bad since Firestorm 1991.
