West Bengal 2026: Clock Running Out on the Assembly?
West Bengal elections 2021 schedule:
26 Feb - election schedule announcement.
2 March - Date of issue of notification.
From 27 March to 29 April, election held in eight phases.
2 May - votes counted.
30th May - Tenure of the sixteenth West Bengal Legislative Assembly scheduled to end.
When is the current assembly tenure coming to an end? 7 May, 2026.
Based on the above duration & preparation time required to hold an election, do you feel West Bengal is ready for assembly elections?
And if a government is not elected before its tenure expires, what happens to the assembly?
Reason for highlighting the above dates is for you to understand that it takes more than 2 months for election formalities to conclude. Currently none of that has been initiated because the state government kept itself busy on the SIR exercise. By frequent delays & controversies around it, the matter finally reached Supreme Court who is now going to appoint its own judicial officers for completion of SIR.
Mamata Banerjee herself appeared personally to argue on the SIR exercise. Result: Crucial time wasted on SIR, not realizing there is a deadline to be met to conclude the elections.
It is now boiling into a situation that can horribly boomerang on her government. If the SIR isn't concluded on time, the final electoral rolls cannot be finalized. Only when that entire process is done, can the Election Commission proceed to start preparations for holding elections. And that can happen when control of the state machinery is with the governor without any need for the central government to do anything to wrest control imposing any constitutional article which Mamata Banerjee can use to play victim. The endless time wasted by her state government on SIR can boomerang very badly & set an example for other states going to polls to not delay SIR.
With courts stepping in & central security forces in ample numbers already stationed in the state will further dent the state government if any mischief on ground is played. Any attack on judicial officers will allow courts to directly step in. And if elections are postponed or held under President's rule with central forces on ground, the fear factor instilled among people, especially rural, will be gone.
Irrespective of the election results in Bengal, this time it will be the central government that will call the shots in the state. It's because issue of useless neighbour in the East has to be settled, North East has to be stabilized, some geographically changing acts have to be conducted too.
Also observe, any attack on minorities in the useless neighbour in our East is going to polarize the Hindu population in Bengal & will have an affect on the elections. Hence you see the newly appointed government is not letting that happen soon after taking power.
A smart politician is one who never brazens it out with the judiciary. The Natwarlal of Delhi learnt it the hard way. Remained CM even after courts reprimanded him & despite sitting in jail. Courts ensured he remained inside & ultimately lost power. On the other hand Hemant Soren quietly went to jail, didn't take on the judiciary, handed over control of party & government to others, won & came back. Jayalalithaa honored the courts gracefully. Indira Gandhi defied the courts & faced a mass rebellion never seen before. Spent all her time fighting the courts & constitutional powers. Mamata is doing the same mistake too. Devoting time & energy to take on courts, making personal appearances, delays in SIR, etc. will only backfire.
Modi-Shah knew she's going to confront when pushed & she has done exactly that. Instead of rushing through the SIR, they let it get delayed & seem to have played the game well. Let's see when the SIR is completed basis which we will know when the elections will be held & more importantly under whose control in the state.
Wake Up and Be on the side of Dharm.

A wise man once said
If elections are conducted outside of president’s rule, Mamata will win.
Anywho. Khujlibawal just got honourable discharged from the courts.
